Global Warming In Texas

Katharine is concerned about increasing temperatures in Texas and the Great Plains.

According to Katharine Hayhoe, “you find that with higher temperatures you obviously need more water to provide plants with the same amount of irrigation because evaporation is a factor……..So climate change is exacerbating the problem we have, and it’s the same across most of the Southwest, which is very water-short”.

One slight problem Katharine, temperatures down your way are virtually unchanged since 1895 as NCDC show. The graph below gives annual mean temperatures for the South region (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana and Arkansas).

Annual 1895 – 2010 Trend = 0.01 degF / Decade

Summer temperatures show no change at all.

Summer (Jun-Aug) 1895 – 2010 Trend = 0.00 degF / Decade

For that matter the other seasons are pretty stable as well.

Fall (Sep-Nov) 1895 – 2010 Trend = -0.05 degF / Decade

Winter (Dec-Feb) 1895 – 2010 Trend = 0.02 degF / Decade

Spring (Mar-May) 1895 – 2010 Trend = 0.04 degF / Decade

Happy Xmas, Katharine! But you really will have to try harder next year.
