Extreme Weather 1970’s Style

December 30, 2011

SHOCK NEWS FROM THE OREGON BULLETIN

Droughts, Floods, Blizzards, Tornadoes, Typhoons and Hurricanes have plagued much of the USA and the world in recent years.

Most people considered these weather conditions to be abnormal and temporary, but, instead, climatologists now believe that the first half of the 20thC was blessed with unusually mild weather and that the global climate has begun returning to a harsher – but more normal – state.

Sounds familiar? Well, yes, but this was written in 1974.

The article continues :-

For the long run, there is mounting evidence of a worldwide cooling trend. The average temperature of the world as a whole has dropped by one third to one half of a degree Centigrade in the last 30 years. “The decline of prevailing temperatures sine about 1945 appears to be the longest continued downward trend since temperature records began” says Professor Hubert H Lamb of the University of East Anglia.

Of course the “Ice Age Scare” of the 1970’s is nothing new. What is interesting though is that they believed, rightly or wrongly, that extreme weather was getting worse, and that a cooler climate was responsible.

Perhaps the most revealing paragraph, though, concerns the “devastating African drought” :-

Global cooling may be related to the devastating African drought, now in its 6th year. Some scientists believe that expansion of the cold polar air caps pushed the monsoon rain belt southward…… Dry weather conditions also prevail in parts of India, China, Kenya, Bolivia and scores of other countries on both sides of the equator, raising the specter of even more serious drought and famine.

Whatever the causes of extreme weather may be, it is clear that scientists took the potential effects of a cooling climate extremely seriously. As Dr Reid Bryson of the University of Wisconsin said :-

There is very important climatic change going on right now. It is something that, if it continues, will affect the whole human occupation of the earth – like a billion people starving.

Do the idiots, who pose as climate scientists these days, really want to return us to those golden days?

If the climate scientist could make up their minds, no that would not work, they will not get out of the ivory towers and see how the real people live and work. They will not do that because they know that they would not be able to hold down a job, would be fired for doing crap work.

    Happy New Year

There have been 4 doomsday scares in about 120 years where the world was to freeze or fry.
As P J O’Rourke said many years ago in each case the cause was the same (us), in the 3rd world millions would die and the cure was always much the same.
By the 1980s’ many of the doomsayers had moved to the new fry camp – they are nothing if not flexible.
And Prof Lamb was from the UEA! They have been at it longer than I knew. I wonder if the curent crew know about their esteemed predecessor and how wrong he was.
Would it make them pause and think.
    Silly question.

The CRU building is even named after Lamb!

To be fair to Hubert Lamb, it was his graph that the IPCC initially used that showed the MWP was much warmer than now.
