Snow joke: Nick Clegg is heading for a holiday in the Alps

Tallbloke reports that Nick Clegg has been brandishing his green credentials again, saying:-

1: I passionately believe that climate change is one of the greatest problems we face today. It is essential that politicians take rapid action to address this issue at local, national and international levels. As a Westminster MP I, along with my Liberal Democrat colleagues, support a Climate Change Bill which would set binding, independently monitored, annual targets for reducing emissions, but I also recognise the need for additional policy measures to make this happen. As a first step the Lib Dems are currently promoting a ‘Green Tax Switch’, which would introduce and increase green taxes on high emission vehicles and aircraft, whilst reducing income taxes elsewhere.

2: Britain should and can lead the way with regards to tackling climate change, using its unique influence in the many international organisations to which it is a member. However, to have any credibility in this respect we must first put our own house in order, cutting UK emissions which currently represent 2% of the global total. As with Kyoto the EU will have a major role to play and Britain should work constructively to support this.

3: I am installing energy saving light bulbs throughout my home and I try to use public transport as far as possible. I recycle recyclable waste at home, try to cut down on the unnecessary use of paper in the office, and unplug all unused electrical appliances. Energy consumption will certainly be a far greater consideration next time I look to purchase a new car or household appliances such as a fridge or kettle. I am also looking into switching to more environmentally responsible gas and electricity suppliers.

Today, however, the Daily Mirror report that Cleggy is flying off with his family to Davos, for a holiday at his parents’ 20 room chalet.

Yes, Nick, that will really help tackle climate change!

Nick Clegg develops a taste for foreign travel

Could this be the same Nick Clegg, who was reported by the Daily Telegraph in 2011 as “spending more money on foreign travel than his Labour predecessor, John (Two Jags) Prescott. “

According to the DT:-

Nick Clegg’s critics claim that he is failing to exert much influence in Downing Street, but the Deputy Prime Minister is certainly making his presence felt on the world stage.

Mandrake can disclose that Clegg ran up a recession-busting £77,116 in travel expenses during the first nine months of the Coalition.

His Labour predecessor, Lord Prescott, who was often criticised for his globe-trotting, spent £61,268 during his last 12 months in the job.

Clegg’s expenses include a £64,000 bill for a two-day visit to Kazakhstan, the former Soviet state favoured by the Duke of York.

The Liberal Democrat leader attended the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) summit, at which Hillary Clinton was a delegate. He chartered a flight and took several officials.

During the election debates, Clegg commented on how he thought it was wrong that domestic electricity prices were lower the more you used, and implied that something would be done about it.
However, as far as I know there has been no mention of it since the election.

I’m glad Clegg exisits. Even the most naive and idealistic person can look at him and see how hypocritical our senior politicians are.
