Solar Power Stats

April 3, 2013

By Paul Homewood

In my analysis of UK Electricity Stats last week, I pointed out that DECC were now lumping power from solar in with the wind figures.

I have now got the individual numbers from DECC.

  Twh % of Total UK
Wind 19.4 5.3
Solar 1.3 0.4
TOTAL UK ELECTRIC GENERATION 363.2

It is not clear whether DECC have merged the two figures together in order to make wind power look better, or because they don’t want to admit just how small a contribution solar makes.

One other statistic worth showing is the quarterly solar split for 2012.

  Twh
Q1 0.20
Q2 0.47
Q3 0.42
Q4 0.24

Solar output for Q4 is about half the that during summer. There is no doubt, that during the depths of winter, it will be much less than half.

I’m assuming that’s the total for ALL wind. Both metered and unmetered embedded systems invisible to the grid? Likewise I’m assuming this is the total for all solar?
