Well I suppose he would say that!!

But let’s consider some facts.

  • In 2012, solar contributed 0.3% of the UK’s electricity generation.
  • Worse still, between October and December, this fell to 0.15%, as daylight hours shortened and demand rose.
  • No monthly figures are provided by DECC, but it would be reasonable to assume that the contribution of solar during Dec/Jan would be less than 0.1%.
  • On average, solar generates about 8% of its capacity rating.
  • A modern nuclear power station, with twin reactors of the type planned at Sizewell C, and with a rating of 3200 MW, would supply about 7% of the UK’s energy needs. Furthermore, this would be supplied on a constant basis.
  • Government plans are based around nuclear supplying 131Twh by 2030, equivalent to 36% of current electricity supply. For solar to supply this, solar capacity would need to increase by 120 fold.
  • Assuming this increase in solar capacity occurred, a similar amount of capacity of conventional capacity, probably gas, would need to be built to provide standby capacity.

Of course, the boss of a company making solar panels would argue that we should install more, but you would have thought the dopey bird interviewing him would have the gumption to ask him a few awkward questions.

The best bit, though, was when Andrew Birch, the CEO of the solar company, Sungevity, said:-

Politicians must be careful not to lock Britons into 20th century energy prices."

Now I think we would all happily settle for that!

    Simple question:

Does Andrew Birch personally, and solar company, Sungevity, buy-in electricity from any other source?

Reblogged this on Cornwall Wind Watch.

Ironic that Birch’s recommendations come from a place where the sun don’t shine.
