If you need a hand with WordPress, PHP, database or stuff in general, gimmie a shout. I have been doing it for a living for 35 years now and can spare a bit of pro-bono time if you would like.
Cheers,
Mark Addinall.
Thanks Mark
I can get into the “My Blogs ” page, and can call up the stats page, but can’t get into “Posts/Pages” page.
I can now see recent comments on the Notifications column, which is an improvement as I could not yesterday!
And I can’t bring my website up (or a few other WordPress sites, like Real Science).
I’ve been to the Library and used their m/c and everything works fine there, so there should not be any password problems.
The problem started yesterday, when I was updating a post, and everything just froze up.
Thanks for your help
Paul
I’ve made progress!
Using LiveWriter, I can get direct into the dashboard.
The only real problem I have left is opening up my website itself.
I can’t do it with the URL, or search engines, or “View the Post” option on the dashboard.
Ah. Just gimmie the URLs you are having trouble with and I’ll have a quick look to see if anything odd is coming down the data stream.
Do I understand correctly? You can log on using another machine but not yours? If so, that is usually the browser Cookie or Cache has gone ballistic. I keep a few different browsers on my machines for testing for just that case.
What happens when “You can’t get in?”.
400 Error
403 Error
500 Error
Blank screen?
Nasty message telling you to go away?
If you RIGHT CLICK on the screen, select VIEW SOURCE, copy and paste the result and I can look at that as well.
Cheers,
Mark.
Yes it’s just my machine.
The URL is https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/
The message is:
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Yeah, that URL is fine.
A few things cause that error, and more and more people are experiencing it of late.
1. See if you can access http://www.speedtest.net/ just to see if your machine is really crawling. My network has fluctuated between 2 Mbps and 48 Mbps over the last few weeks.
2. Quite a lot of people have been getting that error message and lack of page load over the last few months because the ISPs in question, have had some VERY dodgy DNS servers. About 30% of Australia dropped off the net altogether about a month ago! Down for a day, but the problems persisted. I don’t know what operating system you are using, but if it is windows start a CMD box, Linux, UNIX or Mac, start a terminal session, and when you get the bad page load error, try to
$ ping addinall.net
My server is ALWAYS up, so if you get no response, that means you ISP’s DNS machine is dying.
If this is the case, you could change your Primary and Secondary DNS servers to GOOGLE.
4.4.4.4
8.8.8.8
That has cured a few people.
3. I have had this error and traced it to the fact that the switch equipment at the site had changed THEIR configuration and decided that any MTU larger than 1240 Bytes was to large – reject it. The Australian government is RENOWNED for this error. Let me know which OS you are using and I’ll give you instructions on changing your DNS addresses and MTU size.
4. You can try clearing all Cookies and Cache. SOMETIMES that actually works! Not often, but it is worth a shot!
Cheers,
Mark.
I tried clearing the cache and cookies, and it cured the problem straightaway.
Then the problem came straight back again the next time I tried to log in.
The way you can tell if clearing the cache cured the problem is if you can replicate the cure. I suspect you did try to clear the cache again? What happened?
An easy way to discover if the fault lies with Firefox is to swap to another browser. So memory isn’t stuffed:
1. Power the machine down
2. Bring it back up and DON’T start Firefox
3. Give another browser a kick in the guts. If you are on Windows, IE is a good choice. Otherwise Google Chrome is dandy.
4. If you have the same or similar problems then it is likely to be a network issue. We can start to change things one at a time until the problem is fixed.
a) What OS are you using (please please please don’t say Vista! 😉
b) What versions of the browsers?
c) What is your physical network? ADSL, ADSL2+…?
d) Where are you on the planet?
e) Who is your ISP?
I know where all the WordPress server are located so I don’t need that info.
Cheers,
Mark.
I’ve been out all today. Come back home and everything works perfectly, unlike this morning.
BTW – I tried Chrome and had similar problems.
Thanks for your help so far, Mark. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a day or two.
Thanks
Paul
thanks admin. goodgood site.
No worries.
Gimmie a yell.
Sounds like the DNS server issue at your ISP. They are very keen NOT to talk about it!
Cheers,
Mark.

I’m back!!
The problem’s been reoccurring on and off. I installed a new PC today, with new OS -( Windows 8) – , and Internet Explorer instead of Mozilla.
I can get into my dashboard via Live Writer, but cannot get into my website, nor several other WordPress sites.
All other websites seem fine.
I guess this all points to the ISP, but why should this just affect WordPress?
