Next comes their “carbon free” helicopter flight. What’s not to like?

    Paul.

Back on 11th Dec the Beeb reported “Esa’s Cryosat mission detects continued West Antarctic ice loss”

Jonathan Amos stated “The dedicated polar mission finds the region now to be dumping over 150 cubic km of ice into the sea every year.

It equates to a 15% increase in West Antarctica’s contribution to global sea level rise.”

If Mawson(?) was walking along the exposed shore-line in ice-free Commonwealth Bay in January 1912, having arrived there by wooden, wind-powered ship, a significant amount of melt water would have caused a sea-level rise.

Do you know what the ‘global sea level’ was, in 1912? And, it’s comparison with current sea level?

Taking the main points from the BBC:

      1) ice losses from West Antarctica pushed up global sea levels by some 0.28mm a year between 2005 and 2010.– i.e an inch a century!

      2) However, the mission’s researchers caution that some of the increase may simply be the result of Cryosat’s exceptional radar vision.
With two antennas slightly offset from each other, the spacecraft’s instrument is tuned to sense not just the height of the ice but the shape of its slopes and ridges.
      – In other words, they have not got the faintest clue if there is any acceleration, but thought it would make a good headline.

Meanwhile, the glaciers are melting as they have done since the Ice Age!

(It is generally accepted that global sea levels have risen by 6 to 8″ in the last century)

I should have added that I found it hard to visualise “west Antarctica”, ‘cos every direction from the South Pole is northwards.

Try it (locating Commonwealth Bay, and, Pine Island Glacier) on Google Earth!

They should be left where they are. All of them are Warmist, on taxpayer’s expense – they are there to promote the phony GLOBAL warming – if it’s ”warming” they don’t need ice crusher ships in the southern summer: http://globalwarmingdenier.wordpress.com/midi-ice-age-can-be-avoided/

Glaciers calve when they are growing too big for their britches. When they recede, they just melt away from the base.
