No Antarctic Warming Since 1979

December 30, 2013

By Paul Homewood

Antarctic ice

According to Chris Turney, leader of the expedition trapped in the ice off the coast of Antarctica, the expanding sea ice has been caused by global warming.

He obviously has not bothered checking the facts.

First, a look at UAH satellite temperature anomalies for the region. The purple line is the trend, not the mean, but as can be seen is, to all intents and purposes flat. Any trend is actually negative.

And Southern Ocean Sea Temperatures from Bob Tisdale.

14 Southern

Chris Turney is, apparently, Professor of Climate Change at the University of NSW. He is also a Director of Carbonscape Holdings, which has “developed technology to fix carbon from the atmosphere and make a host of green bi-products, helping reduce greenhouse gas levels.”

Carbonscape, a company based in New Zealand, is funded by several government bodies there, such as the Ministry of Science & Innovation, the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries, and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.

I wonder who or what (NGO ?) is responsible for this trip? The idea for such a trip would had to have been hatched several years ago. By Chris Turney, perhaps? Then others would have had to “agree” it was a good idea. Proposals would have to be written and funding sought. The ship would have to be contracted for in advance. Do you suppose all of the money is from the institutions of all those on board? Some from the MSM? UK, NZ, AU governments? Is there a silent partner – a name we would all recognize?

Further, the UAH temperature chart and that of SST provided by Bob Tisdale will convey about the same idea if one clips off the last 2 or 3 years. The point is that a responsible person would know (“or should have known”) sea ice around Antarctica has been growing, that it is not warm there, and that the ocean is cooler there than it was 10 years ago. Was there oversight or review by anyone that might have asked whether or not this was a good idea? Endangerment and reckless are words that come to mind.

I saw – but now can’t find – theat the $1.5m comes from UNSW CCRC, AU Fed Govt, and about 6-8 industry partners. Not including Carbonscape.

You’re right, it’s all total BS Paul.

Currently, sunspot activity is at a short-term Solar Activity High but the intensity of these 11 year cyclic highs has been steadily declining for decades. The last Solar Activity Super Low was about 350 years ago when the Thames famously froze in London and the Northern hemisphere was plunged into an exceptionally cold period with many accompanying deaths.

We are heading that way now in a declining trend that may be of hundreds of years in duration; this may not mean we will be frozen solid in 2014 but just because some trendy-lefty Uni nutter calling himself a scientist but with a strong self-and pecuniary interest in selling the GW/toxic carbon story gets stuck in ice with a bunch of tourists on a jolly to the Antarctic of questionable merit and usefulness (something which I hold strong views about anyway), he should not draw such alarmist conclusions when he is plainly not in possession of all the facts in such a complex story, and we should be especially careful about believing him.

On that other issue, I deplore the “touristization” of the Antarctic, especially by people who have little idea of the need to prepare properly for it and even more-so by those who undertake stupid ‘races’ to the South Pole or to ‘conquer the Antarctic”. You never conquer it. Sometimes it will just let you have a little win to satisfy your ego but it will bite back sooner or later.

Such as on this occasion for this turkey for whom this interruption to his jaunt is a classic example of how unpredictable the Antarctic can be weather-wise, requiring two ships going save his sorry backside. He’s lucky it’s summer and he has the benefit of a warm ice-breaking ship and lots of hot food and can write his dopey blogs and have the luxury of his TV broadcasts and do his best to sound intrepid while he waits for someone to rescue him – at vast cost.

Polar exploration is no longer like Scott, Shackleton and Mawson in their primitive clothing, tinned food, wooden sailing ships and no motorized transport at all, so these fools think they can sneak in and out with ease in a plane or a large ship. I’ve worked there for months at high altitude up to 12,000′, mapping the Royal Society and Central Victorialand Mtns at temperatures down to -63C in summer, not on the shelf which is relatively warm at around -5 to +5C in summer on a good day, and I know from experience the place will still kill you in a heart-beat if it has a mind to.

Air New Zealand discovered that on 28 November 1979, when their DC-10 Antarctic sightseeing trip Flight 901 collided with Mount Erebus on Ross Island, killing all 237 passengers and 20 crew on board. The cause was lack of preparation and an untrained crew and a false horizon caused by unique Antarctic conditions. Mt Erebus is a giant volcanic edifice over 13,000′ elevation. The plane hit the mountain at cruise speed at 1,500’ elevation – so much for Minimum Safe Altitude!!.

Antarctica is a wonderful place I would go back to tomorrow but it does not tolerate fools! In much the same vein as St Exupery wrote about aviation:

“Antarctic exploration is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect”.

From the mouth of a mere civil engineer, but one who makes a point of being informed of all apparently lucid argument to determine where the truth may lie. After decades of dealing with governments, bureaucrats and on occasions the UN, and seen the utter waste and bloodymindedness to achieve a mandated path to whatever goal – I am intrigued by the gullibility of not just the masses but of educated people. One would be foolish not to heed the words penned by Doug – but clearly ‘out there’ are many fools. Nothing has changed since Mencken’s — Hobgoblins: “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” — H.L. Mencken 1923 PC

I wonder what a “Climate Change professor” teaches in a university. And what is the use and benefit a student can derive from this discipline in his career… unless he is studying geopolitchik and climate change activism. His professor doesn’t look as a very knowledgeable person in climate issues…

Did the Russian captain go into the ice on his responsibility? Or was he made to
go on the responsibility of Turney? The check for the failed expedition is on the house? On the Russian captain or on Turney? Someone please find out…..

I think they are setting the world up for “global cooling”, maybe knowing that some volcanoes and major fires are going to cloud up the skies and produce the real “urgent” climate “crisis” that needs major taxation increases in order to address. Then all the scoffers have already committed themselves to agree that Global cooling is the real threat, set up by the cleaver intrigues of subtle men…

Nature has beaten Carbonscape Holdings to the punch. The ingenious device for fixing carbon from the atmosphere is called a tree. Chris Turney can find them at any plant nursery for a reasonable cost. In many cases the local councl will give you free ones. What sort of a scam is this bloke pulling?

The videos uploaded to youtube of these young adults is sickening. They are entirely ignorant of the danger they are in, and of the danger that their stupidity has put others in, including the crew members of icebreakers out to complete other tasks to keep others alive. Disgusting.

Professor Chris Turney’s daily reports to the world are reminiscent of what we saw during the US invasion of Iraq, and the media briefings by “Comical Ali”, telling the world how Saddam’s forces were repelling the American invaders etc etc etc. All bullshit just like this “ship of fools” stranded in all that Antarctic ice.

I wonder when t he bbc will get round to this story? Some while, I expect, since they appear now to consist of trendy lefties at both management and presentation levels.
