The paper also shows a global surface temperature decrease of ~0.8C during the Dalton Minimum, by way of comparison about the same as the 0.7 – 0.8C global warming since the Little Ice Age ended in ~1850.

As I’ve always argued, you cannot explain recent warming without explaining the Little Ice Age, Medieval Warming Period, Dark Ages, Roman Warming Period and all the other previous episodes of warm and cool interludes.

Russ Steele has the full detail here.

I would add just one comment.

The Maunder and Dalton Minimums are well recognised as coinciding with the coldest periods of the LIA. However, the MWP began its transition into the LIA as early as the 13thC, when Greenland began to become much colder.

The underlying causes of these constant switches from warm to cold cycles, and back again, remain a long way from being understood.

The alarmists, however, are very sure that a small increase in a beneficial trace gas has doomed us all. We are not by any means certain what triggered the not so little Ice Age. Extremely unlikely man had very much to do with that.

Thanks, Paul. I found Russell Steele’s blog, “The Next Grand Minimum” is very interesting.
    http://nextgrandminimum.wordpress.com deserves links.
And yes, 0.8°C global cooling during Dalton Minimum, would be about same magnitude as 20th century warming. This is not the end of the world, but we are many more people and animals and plants. Much more at risk while the governments trumpet more warming to come and don’t prepare for cold.
