Boscastle Information Centre
By Paul Homewood
UK readers will be well aware of the Boscastle flood of 2004, which I reported on a few weeks ago.
We called in there for a visit, while on holiday last week, and I took the above picture at the National Trust Information Centre.
Note how it talks of 300mm per hour, which I immediately knew was wrong. So I emailed the centre, once we were back at our cottage. (I did not have the exact numbers to hand).
I was pleasantly surprised to get the following reply so quickly.
So it is good to see that they will be correcting it. (I’ll probably be back next year to check!!)
But it is incredible that the mistake stemmed from the original guide book. I realise that, for some people, metrication still makes little sense, and that they may well have intended 30mm and not 300mm.
Nevertheless, I do wonder whether people are so taken in by endless global warming propaganda, that they believe any numbers thrown at them, no matter how ridiculous.

Well done! I too am surprised at the very positive and action oriented response – nice place visited there years ago. Anyone with a moment to spare might like to drop in and thank Mike and spread the word about the place and the positive attitude of the management.
Is it not possible that the rainfall rate was 300mm/hr over a very short period of time?
During the “toonflood” event of 28/6/2012 my own rain gauge measured a rate of 84 mm and hour over a 10 min period and it is possible that the rate was higher over a shorter period. Moreover my location was not at the point of maximum rainfall.
I agree that even if this was the case the figure is misleading, especially if they don’t state the period of time involved.
I suppose one large raindrop in 1/10th second might equate to 300mm/hr, but really …….
The following correspondence is interesting:

A few references to rates at 300mm or above, although I agee it was most likely a mistake.
Particularly as weather stations were less common in 2004!
Perhaps they should be renamed the “Boscastle Misinformation Centre”!!

Very nice to see they are going to correct this. No ulterior motive is needed, however it does show the ‘loose’ attitude to weather records.
24′ a day, and 168′ a week! A flood, indeed. 😉

Any locals here could check for you – good spot!
97% of people would have taken that 300mm fig as gospel (300 x 5hrs = 1.5 M !!! )…….a truly biblical flood.
Well spotted & good they will correct it.
