Heidi Central has reported that the North East has waited an unusually long time for its first 90F day of the year.
Of course, as some of the more intelligent amongst us know, this is just weather.
But of more interest was their comment further down the page:
Prevailing upper air patterns have kept both Boston and New York City from sweltering so far this summer, but summers overall have been heating up across much of the country under the influence of global warming. Under the scenarios with the highest future greenhouse gas emissions, the entire Northeast would see heat waves increase in frequency, intensity and duration, according to the National Climate Assessment released in May.
The (first) link takes us to this report:

Which provides this map.
My suspicious mind tells me to check the facts!
Let’s take New York State, as this was mentioned, and on the USHCN list for there, the first listed is Addison.
According to the USHCN database, the distribution of daily maximum temperatures at Addison looks like this.
Clearly, heatwaves were much more intense and common in the first half of the 20thC. Note, though, the absence of really hot days in 1970’s and 80’s.
Now, I wonder why Heidi’s little workers chose to use 1970 as their start point in their misleading map?

They don’t know they were born. The nearly year long European drought of 1540. Now that was hot don’t ya know. Oh and carbon dioxide levels substantially lower than they are now.
The temperature in Boston reached 91F this afternoon.
In response, the NCDC cooled March 1922 by 0.26C.
