Winters Were Wetter 100 Years Ago
By Paul Homewood
One of the things that Julia Slingo and her cronies insist they are sure about is that climate change is making winters wetter in the UK. But is there any evidence for this?
Not according to the long running England & Wales Precipitation Series.

To be fair, winters were much drier during the cold times of the 19thC, but since then there seems to have been little change.
The wettest decade of the lot was the 1910’s, and both the 1920’s and 30’s were also wetter than the last decade, which ranks 5th.
Even with last winter’s record rain, the last 10 years has still not been exceptional.
I sometimes wonder whether Julia and her chums ever bother to look back at historical data.

If we had weather gauges in the 14th Century I might have taken Julia Slingo seriously. As it is she is the Alistair Campbell of climate – hired to massage the message.
I bet you didn’t receive a Christmas card this year, off the pantomime dame.
Paul,
Looking at your chart it looks like there was a step change in the 1910s and that there is a 70 year cycle so winters might well end up with a decreasing trend, for a few decades.

Data is for wimps.
Well, since you are speaking about the 19th century, you should also take into consideration the fact that Europe’s weather was influenced by the two World Wars. Here http://www.2030climate.com/a2005/05_11-Dateien/05_11.html are some interesting aspects regarding this idea, including some graphics about UK’s weather.
Why do you think that the ex-scientist, Slingo, got her “Damehood”.
By lying to the public.
