Hard on the news that the Longannet coal fired power station will close next year, there is another blow to the UK’s energy security.
E.ON have announced that they are withdrawing their 900MW gas power station from the UK grid. Energy Live News report:
E.ON has announced its Killingholme CCGT plant will no longer contribute to grid capacity.
The gas power station on the banks of the Humber estuary has 900MW of Transmission Entry Capacity (TEC) which will now no longer be available to National Grid. E.ON has also said the power station is at serious risk of permanent closure, subject to the outcome of an ongoing tender for National Grid’s Supplemental Balancing Reserve (SBR) service.
E.ON UK Chief Executive, Tony Cocker, said: “First and foremost we are focused on supporting our colleagues who are potentially affected by this change and will work closely with them in the coming weeks and months to ensure the best possible options are available on an individual level.
“The reality, however, is that the market conditions for gas-fired power stations are extremely difficult and without support from the SBR contract, permanent closure is a real and present risk to Killingholme. Over the last few years we have invested billions in the UK’s energy infrastructure but there is no doubt that the challenging operational environment continues to provide uncertainty and risk that must be addressed.”
Killingholme, which was entered into the recent UK Capacity Market Auction but was unsuccessful, is a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine comprising two 450MW modules.
Approximately 50 people in total are employed at the North Lincolnshire site. E.ON have not ruled out redundancy as a possibility if the SBR tender is unsuccessful.
Gas power stations are finding it difficult to compete against subsidised renewables and cheap coal, and not only in the UK. Intermittent operation simply does not cover costs, without a guarantee of payment for back up capacity under the Capacity Market Mechanism.
The dilemma is that as coal power stations and old nuclear are removed from the mix in the next 5 to 10 years, and as wind power capacity rapidly expands, the need for dozens of new gas fired power stations becomes ever more pressing.
What chance is there of these being built when existing ones, with their capital costs already paid for, can’t afford to stay operational? As one commenter on the website puts it:
Yet again, as increasingly these days, raving lunatics running the asylum. In May the choice will be between madmen and nut cases on present showing.
Heaven help us all!
UPDATE
Stewgreen reminds us that C.Gen are, by coincidence, building a 470MW gas power plant next door to Killingholme. Details here.
What is interesting is this statement from C.Gen:
"The UK’s future energy generation capacity is currently uncertain with 18GW of existing plant due to close by 2020, including a third of the country’s existing coal-fired power plants, which have provided over 40 per cent of the UK’s energy generation in the recent cold winters. “
DECC’s latest figures for total UK generating capacity, based on 2013, is 85GW, so 18GW is a hefty slice.

Perhaps they plan on installing “Floating Solar Photocells” on the English Channel to make up for the coal fired plans. The cells could be held afloat through a series of Hydrogen Balloons and anchored in place by the clouds Floating aloft! Now, how does that for any sense, about as much as the closing of the plants.
They are not lunatics, but corrupt criminals, lining their pockets from the green scam.
Each and every one of them should be in jail.
We know who they are. Troffa, Lord Dipin, etc. etc.
I see the scam across the pond as well. Good news, I think. Sen. Harry Reid will not seek reelection. However, I fear his agenda for the next 22 months. Desperate administrations write equally poor legislation.
GGen * is building a new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) on adjacent land. It is crucial that you mention that Paul.

and you missed the other Centrica power station closing on the same site
Some one more informed might like to comment or research, but here is some context as far as I understand it.
There are no cities in the entire counties of North Lincolnshire and NE Lincolnshire yet there at least 8 thermal power stations within a 20Km circle plus Micky Mouse wind
Keadby – mothballed
Scunthorpe steelworks own PS
Brigg 1 just closed by Centrica just closing
Brigg 2 brand new tiny Straw Bale PS under construction
Stallingborough – South Humber Bank power station
Killingholme 1 Centrica – just closing
Killingholme 2 Eon – just closing
Killingholme 3 underconstruction by * CGen (I think connected to Lord Debden) 470MW
(Killingholme and Immingham need large power for the oil refinery and megaport)
Dave Cameron’s father in laws 1000/day wind subsidy operation.
Cleethorpes – offshore windfarms
Skegness – offshore windfarms
– It is also close to where the power from the Dogger Bank massive subsidy wind farm will come onshore
– across the 2 Km wide Humber estuary there are perhaps other power stations but I don’t know cos East Yorks is a foreign country for us (There’s a place called Hull there apparently)
I missed some Immingham docks
The new Hatfield 900MW plant will be 30 miles west
Thornhill propsal (North Humber ?)
see the list which may not include factories own power stations

Thanks Stew.
I’ve added an update.
Did you see C.Gen’s comment about how much capacity is due to close by 2020?
Is anyone able to make any sense out of any of this at all? Surely there’s more to this than just sheer madness on the part of the ‘Huhn with two Eds?’.
How messed up is the system if they’re closing an existing CCGT station only to build an almost identical one next door? I notice Cgen claim their new plant *can* be fitted with CCS and *can* supply CHP – however, it doesn’t say it *will*. I guess that depends how juicy the subsidies on offer are.
I understand all new thermal plants now need to be “CCS” ready, which means that once (if) CCS technology is developed, it can be plugged straight in.
The choice is……the Lunatics…… or UKIP….vote for common sense NOT Common Purpose(tm)
Unfortunately CCS has yet to be proved as an engineering possibility. These madmen still have yet not shown any empirical data that proves that the GHE theory is a real effect not violating the laws of physics.
Paul, take a look at the latest report over at no tricks zone.
It is the opposite of the UK, they have added a massive 70Gw of Renewables since 2002, but have also added more Fossil Fueled generation at the same time.
So they have invested €200Billion in renewables and removed zero CO2 generation while destabalising their grid, which has to be the biggest waste of cash ever.

To the east of the A11/A1304 south of Six Mile Bottom is a field – a large field – covered with solar panels. Once food was grown on what is very good soil and a good level site for grain and other crops. The panels are so close together nothing will grow beneith because no sunlight will reach the ground.
It is clear that the market cannot be operating because there is no possibility solar panels could produce as much revenue as crops on that land if it were not for the distortions of subsidies and a rigged energy market.
How much longer can we allow the fools or knaves to ruin our energy security, our food security and national defence.
