Carry On Lying At The BBC

On 16th March, three days after Cyclone Pam hit Vanuatu, the BBC made a big splash about how powerful the storm was, as shown above.

At the time, I pointed out that the true sustained wind speed was 145kt, or 268kph, making it a powerful, but nevertheless just run of the mill, cyclone in that part of the world. I therefore submitted a complaint to the BBC about their gross inaccuracy.

Unsurprisingly, they have tried to fob me off, sending me this reply:

We have checked with our reporter who said the wind speed figure came from news wires at the time, which reported speeds of up to 300km/h.

We note other media outlets were reporting the same speed:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/mar/18/food-concerns-mount-in-vanuatu-after-cyclone-pam

http://www.smh.com.au/environment/weather/cyclone-pam-vanuatu-rescue-effort-as-bodies-picked-up-after-monster-storm-20150316-144nlp.html

So apparently it is OK to publish false information, as long as you got it from somewhere else and the Guardian did the same!!

Needless to say, I have resubmitted my complaint to the next level.

And most of the rest of the world will report the BBC figure as ‘Fact’.

So much for the British Broadcasting Chinese-Whisper Service.

While I admire your resolve, the BBC will NEVER admit that it is wrong.
Twisting facts at the BBC is so common place, they don’t know what is the truth and what is not.

Unfortunately for the BBC cyclone strength is based on the steady wind speed not maximum gusts.

Unfortunately, the media and authorities never admit wrong-doing until there is wide public knowledge of the facts. Look how long it takes before the truth comes out on many things.

I personally know this as a matter of fact after my dealings (on another matter) with the Office for National Statistics.

We are run by corrupt evasive people and have no honour – they only care about their own jobs or position in power – not the public.

@QV a correction “the BBC will NEVER admit that it is wrong … ON CLIMATE”
see todays comments at BH where we discuss when the BBC accepted and refused complaints (they corrected a Thatcher prog on iplayer quickly)

    see my comment,Geronimo,
and Alan the Brit e.g. “My complaint wasn’t upheld, I just got the usual contrite bland statement about facts correct at the time of broadcast, etc. I gave up after that! “

I’m sick to death of the BBC. They just constantly lie about the climate and then claim it’s OK to lie about the climate, … because it’s their religion?

You will just get BS from every level in the BBC Paul.

I still think (as I have commented before) that in the future some people will have mental problems as their religion, and its claims, falls apart – much as some devout Christians did in the 19th century when the age of the Earth was shown to be obviously more than a few thousand years old and the theory of evolution took a hold. Some still believe the thousand years dogma today and they are not all residing in the Middle-East.

I would like to live long enough to see it happen (though I wish them no real harm) but as an old man that might not be possible.

Slightly OT, but be careful about over generalised statements. It is true some Christians found an old earth a problem, but equally many did not and had published stuff about it before Darwin, eg Hugh Miller’s ‘Testimony of the Rocks’ published in 1857.

Good luck with your raised level complaint Paul. I am sure you know what you are getting in to. From my own experience, if you pursue this right through the Trust, I think you might even have some success (not that I had any!). Given that you are challenging facts and that it will be a long time since the event, when you finally get a result from appealing the Trust’s decision, you might even get some sort of admission.

Isnt the source quoted on the graphic NOAA. ( a reputable source)

Yet when you complained they said their source was ‘news wires’.

A quick check of NOAA website for Cyclone Pam says:
“As Pam trekked southward, that warmth helped the storm develop into a Category 5 tropical cyclone with estimated 165 mph (145kt) winds by March 12”

165mph is 265km/h which is your claim too !

That’s right. The link to the JTWC is also the official NOAA report.
