How CRUTEM4 Cranked Up The Warming
By Paul Homewood
The Met Office’s Hadley Center are responsible for compiling the HADCRUT global temperature datasets, in collaboration with the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.
In 2012, they brought out the new HADCRUT4 version, which had the effect of slightly increasing the warming trend, particularly in recent years. As part of the switch from HADCRUT3 to HADCRUT4, they also introduced a new land only temperature series, CRUTEM4.
Woodfortrees noticed at the time how much this had changed since the CRUTEM3 version. And, unsurprisingly, it had the effect of increasing the warming trend.
According to Woodfortrees, CRUTEM4 seems to have a markedly higher recent trend (2.8°C/century) than CRUTEM3 (2.2°C/century).
In other words, nearly a quarter of the claimed land warming has resulted from the change in dataset.

But HadCRUT4.3 (=CRUTem+HadSST) still has a trend since 1850 of only 0.49 C per century since 1850, so I am not going to lose any sleep just yet 🙂
Obviously, CRUTEM4 was essential. CRUTEM3 simply wasn’t delivering the results expected.
Hang on Hadcrut3 had some ocean data, Hadcrut4 is land only ..yet the switch boosted warming. Activist’s argument is that “the heat is hiding in the ocean” ..OK they mean deep ocean
Cos if surface ocean data is used you actually get the lower temps of Hadcrut3.
I make 2.8 / 2.2 or 0.6 /2.2 to be more than a quarter – 27% in fact. Odd how each revision increases apparent dangerous manmade global warming, and never the other way round.
Let’s face it, we know it’s not science anymore, it’s jobs for the boys.
It doesn’t seem to matter which metric involved with Global Warming/Climate Change you choose to examine, little sticky fingers re-writing the historical data to fit the narrative seems to be a common theme. Dr. Josh Willis bumped up the Argo data to show ocean warming instead of cooling, GISS has done the same thing that CRUTEM has done. Nearly 30% of the 3.2 mm/yr in sea level rise as promulgated by Colorado University is due to data inflation. All of that can be easily proven by anyone who cares to do a little digging. I assume that data for everything else; polar bears, coral reefs, ocean pH, glaciers, ice caps, tropical cyclones, droughts, tornadoes, you name it has also been corrupted.
But even 3.2 mm. per year is not going to flood anybody’s beach house any time soon.
Thank you for this.
However, the change you have indicated for recent trend does not seem to be quite correct. The use of 360 for “last samples” for both v3 and v4 yields different start and end points for the time series for each version. (This is clear only in the raw data output.) Trend of v3 is from 1984.42 to 2014.42. Trend of v4 is from 1985.17 to 2015.17. I gather that’s because v3 does not extend as recently as v4 does. I suspect, then, one would need to use “to” and “from” to get matching results. I don’t know how much difference doing so would make.
Thanks, Paul. It is evident HadCRUT4 is an “improvement” of HadCRUT3 as it shows a cooler past and a warmer present.
But, if we keep pointing this out, and showing it, we can palliate it’s corrosive effect.
Neither UAH or RSS show a renewed warming trend since the great El Niño of 1998.
The El Niño of 2014/2015 is causing a warming spike, I hope it lasts.
Yes, I don’t know why the alarmists are afraid of higher temperatures, when it’s the Little Ice Age they should be afraid of.

that we still have 3 months of data missing from 3 of 4 the relevant data sets,
I wonder if they are waiting for some kind of warming signs?
I’ve emailed Paul at WOODFORTREES about it, and it bounced back. He does not get paid for this so I suspect he is just behind.
I have access to all the original data anyway
a lecture by Dr Murry Salby after a lifetime of study on atmosphere CO2 suggests that the current scare on global warming is the usual political garbage..Video available next month.
you should compare version 2 with version 4. it’s even worse; total man-made warming indeed.
