South African Climate Plan May Increase Emissions By 19%

South Africa is the 15th largest emitter of CO2, so let’s see what their climate plan promises.

All a bit long winded, but essentially they are committing to a peak of as much as 614 MtCO2e. But what does this mean?

 

We have to delve into the GHG Inventory for South Africa 2000-10, published in 2013, to find out.

 

 

Targets include LULUCF, so we can expect a rise from the 2010 level of 518 MtCO2e to 614 MtCO2e, between 2025 and 2030. (AFOLU stands for Agriculture,Forestry & Other Land Use).

Hardly surprising they did not want to spell this news out in their INDC!
