Jason Samenow’s Fake Record Temperature At Montreal

Washington Post’s weather man, Jason Samenow can’t even get his facts right, it seems:

He claims:

Montreal recorded its highest temperature in recorded history, dating back 147 years, of 36.6C on Monday. The city also posted its most extreme midnight combination of heat and humidity.

Which is all very strange, because the official Canadian Government data shows a much higher temperature of 37.6C in August 1975:

    WUWT also has “Record Breaking Temps”. all because the Weather Stations are badly sited.
    The MSM is currently using anything they can to promote CAGW.

      You can almost smell the desperation of the warmists as still their alarmism isn’t working. Strange how they are ignoring all the snow in Southern Africa.

    The origin of this Montreal claim seems to be a facebook post according to the Washington Post article.
    Initially he corrects himself and concedes the 1975 record.
    Now he is claiming the 1975 record was an error and is being changed.

    Montreal sets new all-time record high of 36.6C at McGill University weather station (CWTA) today. Records begin 147 years ago! Previous 36.1C.

    Jul 3

    station is now called “McTavish” (formerly “Montreal McGill”) and was moved less than 1km in 1993.

    also note that the all-record for CYUL, 37.6C from 1975, is very likely incorrect and should be 35.6C. This is because temperatures were recorded to the nearest degree F in 1975, and 35.6=96F. Also, none of the hourly observations that day were above 35C at CYUL.

    Jul 5

    In summary, this was an all-time record for the reference climate station for Montreal, but warmer temperatures have been reported in other spots of the city in 1975.

    Jul 6

    the 37.6C reading at YUL is in error and will be changed to 35C by ECCC.

    I think I can see what he is saying, if they only recorded to nearest degree.
    96F=35.6
    97F = 36.1
    98F=36.7
    99F=37.2
    100F=37.8

    But he importantly he concedes
    “In summary, this was an all-time record for the reference climate station for Montreal, but warmer temperatures have been reported in other spots of the city in 1975.”

      “…temperatures were recorded to the nearest degree fahrenheit in 1975…”

      What an idiotic lie.

        Yes, it is a bit of a stretch.
        Surely they have an archive of the original hand written record.
        Changing it to 35.6C doesn’t seem right when other other spots in the city had a record.

        By definition “records” are “outliers” and this is precisely what Scientists usually ignore.

        Canada switched to Celsius on April 1, 1975. It is unlikely that temperatures would be recorded in Fahrenheit during the summer of 1975.

    “• Scotland provisionally set its hottest temperature on record. The UK Met Office reported Motherwell, about 20km southeast of Glasgow, hit 33.2C on Thursday, passing the previous record set in August 2003 at Greycrook. Additionally, Glasgow had its hottest day on record, hitting 31.9.”
    The lie goes marching on!

    It demonstrates the old saying,

    “A Lie Can Travel Halfway Around the World While the Truth Is Putting On Its Shoes”

    Often attributed to Mark Twain, but apparently even that’s a lie! https://quoteinvestigator.com/2014/07/13/truth/

    Just for the fun of it, I am re-posting the 2 articles I put up last week after Rush Limbaugh quoted from the first one;. Seems as though they “forgot” about 1911–no AC and little ice in those days.

    Summer 1976 in the UK has featured heavily in recent weeks, but there was also “The Great Coronation Summer of 1911”. A few quotes from the book “The Story of the British and Their Weather” by Patrick Nobbs:

    “On 2 July it once again turned hot …. almost every day of the month brought clear skies, both south and north … the ground cracked and the grass began to turn brown right across the country, by 8th July it reached 30C at Kew, London reached 32C on two occasions in July, on the 22nd a very high official temperature of 36C was measured at Epsom”.
