Pop Up Ads

November 8, 2018

By Paul Homewood

Somebody commented the other day about pop ups appearing on this site. It appears that WUWT and probably other WordPress sites are also affected.

I have copied Anthony’s comments, and ask that readers do the same:

I’m sorry I have to write this, but I need your help, especially if you are an Apple products user, such as iPad or iPhone. I have been getting complaints from people that visit WUWT for a few days now that have been saying they have been getting these fake “Google” pop-up ads that redirect to another website, making it nearly impossible to read articles on WUWT.

I don’t own a single Apple product, so I can’t check, but I did verify with WordPress engineers that the problem exists, and is real. They think they finally have it locked down, but I need some help to check. So if you have either of these devices (seems to be a mobile device issue only) please check WUWT now and tell me if you see anything like this:

If you still see something like, please leave a comment and provide as much details as you can. If you have an Apple product, and you aren’t seeing this sort of ad, that information is useful too.

Thanks. I’m sorry for the trouble, I have no control over this.

I am getting it on my IPAD with both Safari and Chrome. I may have stopped it on Safari by clearing the Safari history. But this does not seem to be possible with Chrome. It is extremely annoying.

I win a phone every time I open the ‘not a lot’ comments section on my I -phone.
Hitting the cancel button doesn’t close the ad it takes me to their website.

Me too. Same with WUWT, however after winning around 40 I-Phone 7s, i’ve Not had it come up since yesterday evening. It also unleashed a number of nuisance calls to my mobile devices which I’ve blocked.

I have UBlock and Adguard adblocker on my browser and am using a desktop computer with Firefox on Linux.
On this page Ublock is blocking 8 instances:

and AdGuard Adblock is blocking 4 instances but not specifying what they are.

I am seeing sponsered ads with images in my email notification that say “recommended by powerinbox” It says this post is ad supported in the email. I presumed this was viaGoogle.

These are the ads in the email:
Profit from Bitcoin today! – master gameplan
    Mother earns £16,409 / month – tesla,
Sweden stuns European Union in Referendum – truelibrarian( dot )com

It was different ads last time so they are generated randomly. Hope this helps

I am on an Imac and run adblocker and sometimes ghostery. I do get a dropdown ad, but this all started after updating to Safari 12.0.1. Before that, nothing. This is the only ad I’ve seen, here or on WUWT.

I left the message on this website on a previous thread and was just going to leave a message to say it appeared to be cured when I just got it again on my iPad, so it’s not been sorted yet. It occurred when I hit the “leave one” at the head of The comments.

I have a mini-mac desktop and I am getting a narrow drop-down ad – all different ones when I start to scroll down. I have Adblock but it doesn’t work on these or other ads now on your site. On the other hand when I use Chrome, there isn’t a problem – yet!

  17. November 8, 2018 6:47 pm

I use Firefox with NoScript and have not had any problems.

Was having the problem visiting your site and WUWT for the past 4 days when accessing via iPad. Problem resolved at WUWT yesterday and your site today. Aithough annoying, it wasn’t enough of a problem to deter your diehard followers from eventually getting around the issue but certainly would have deterred the new or casual visitor from your sites.
