Bill Giles Wants To Turn Weather Forecasts Into Climate Propaganda Half Hour

March 20, 2019

By Paul Homewood

From the Graiufaodd:

The veteran weatherman Bill Giles is calling on the BBC and other major broadcasters to radically overhaul their forecasts to incorporate information about climate change.

The former head of BBC weather presenters has said more needs to be done by broadcasters to highlight climate change to face the “reality more squarely and openly”.

Giles, who presented weather forecasts at the corporation for nearly two decades, is urging TV channels to come up with a “radical approach to keep viewers properly informed”.

In a piece for Radio Times, Giles, 79, writes: “The hourly forecasts that we now see do an excellent job in giving us the likely weather events over the coming few days, and this must continue. But to properly explain the underlying changes to climate they will need to look much further afield at the weather across the world, reporting and analysing extremes on a daily basis.

“So I am calling on the BBC and the other major broadcasters to incorporate an additional five- to 10-minute slot into the forecast that focuses properly and honestly on the Earth’s changing climate.

“This climate change slot should air at least once a week and would use our technical ability to show weather everywhere in the world to explain in clear, ‘non-jargony’ or technical terms the reasons why our climate is changing – largely due to human influences – and the effects of this on us and all other animals.”

The forecaster, who says he has been highlighting the effects of climate change since the 1980s, warns: “If our mathematics are correct, then a 2C change will mean that the London summer climate in 2050 would be similar to that of southern France of today – and by 2100 similar to that of Athens.”

It might seem astonishing that a supposedly objective meteorologist should want to get associated with such unscientific nonsense as this, but bring it on Bill!

It would be a great opportunity to remind viewers that:

1) Hurricanes are not getting more frequent, or severe, despite predictions that they would.

2) Violent tornadoes are far less common than they used to be.

3) Droughts are not getting any worse.

4) And neither are floods.

5) Summer temperatures may be a fraction of a degree higher than a century ago, but this does not mean that heatwaves are more common.

6) Equally cold winters are not quite as severe as in the past.

7) Above all, the world’s weather has changed remarkably little since the 19thC, and certainly not for the worse.

As Bill Giles should know better than the rest of us, it is weather which dominates our day to day existence,  not climate.

The massive variability of weather from year to year, and week to week far outweighs the tiny long term trends in climate, which we would not even notice without modern databases.

After all, we have always had floods and droughts, heatwaves and extreme cold, hurricanes and tornadoes. It is these weather events which dominate human experience, and not slightly higher temperatures.

As for his assertion that we are on the way to a South of France climate, I suggest he  checks the actual data:

England Mean daily maximum temp - Summer

Of course, Bill Giles has been writing about this nonsense for a while now, for instance this article in the Radio Times in 2014.

I’ve no doubt writing such tosh earns the old booby a few bob. I just hope his proposed climate slot is given to someone with a bit more integrity.

The BBC weather is going to be an awfully slow show if climate is to be introduced. Like 1,000 years slow. I think we’ll have all gone to bed long before the end.

The tussle between May, trying to drag the UK back over the threshold into the EU, on its belly, and the EU, trying to throw us out on our collective ear – each pretending that their policy is the exact opposite of what it is – continues.

The current part of the end-game, with May threatening to destroy* the Conservative Party and let in the Marxists, if she does not get her way,
        was rather predictable.

The almost comical way in which the EU presents the UK with various insulting deals, hoping May will just shut up and realize she is not even a useful idiot to them any longer, can only be appreciated by sufficiently cynical people.

Quite why the “EU Project” is a secular religion for so many puzzles me, just as “Climate Change” obsession puzzles me.

        *Probably, “Job done!” with that.

Taking his inspiration from The Weather Channel? Maybe it will come with text notifications of rain starts to the minute and named weather events.

There has been pressure on forecasters for a long time to push global warming aka climate change. This was US “climate scientist” Heidi Cullen in 2007,

“WASHINGTON – The Weather Channel is standing by a climatologist who is taking some heat after blogging that TV weather forecasters skeptical about man-made global warming theories should lose their professional certification.

Climate expert Heidi Cullen defended herself last week in The Weather Channel’s One Degree Climate Change blog after questioning the fitness of meteorologists who disagree with her conclusions.”

The same Heidi Cullen is at Climate Central these days, still pushing that agenda,
“Now, LaPointe routinely reports on the effects of climate change — from the escalated growth of poison ivy to a jump in the number of high-pollen days — alongside his usual seven-day nightly forecasts on CBS affiliate WRGB in Albany, New York.

Key to the shift has been Climate Central, the nonprofit that helped school LaPointe. The Princeton, New Jersey-based organization sponsors classes and webinars for meteorologists and also shares real-time data and graphics with TV stations”

“So far, the efforts have paid off. The number of stories on global warming by television weather people has increased 15-fold over five years, according to data from the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University. If the trend continues this year, there will be more than a thousand stories that touch on climate delivered during local TV weathercasts, up from just 55 such climate stories in 2012.”

The BBC get their “thousand stories” in on a regular basis in News and elsewhere and are obviously up for this and probably sounding it out with the Radio Times piece. Shukman was banging the AGW drum quite disgracefully last night about the Mozambique cyclone.

Watch for the UN to demand changing the name of Athens to London.
“The City” itself can be rebranded as Londinium, and the temperature records for the newly named Greek city can be spliced at the end of the Central England Temperature Record.
    No one will notice.

Perhaps one missed it, but in my comment on the school strikes, I added a note about the Bill Giles article and this gem of a quote from the print edition…

“Where the sceptics go wrong is they confuse weather and climate.”

I love the bit where he says: “If our mathematics are correct, then……….blah blah blah”

The weather for a long time now has been telling us that the mathematics are INCORRECT.
Someone should tell Bill Giles, so it can be put into the next propaganda slot.

One story they are not likely to include is the fact that there are now four times as many Polar Bears in the Arctic than the hoaxers had been telling us. Good news will never ever be on the agenda of people who pray that their warnings of a forthcoming catastrophe will happen and hope upon hope that it will be ‘worse than we thought’ Good news on the GW subject will never be allowed to be aired. To these people, lies are better than being proved wrong.

“…lies are better than being proved wrong.”

I say slyly to people, “If you adopt multiple hypotheses you will never be wrong!” They just look blank. Only about 1% of the population is naturally capable of keeping an open mind. The other 99% experience intense psychological discomfort if they must “wait and see.”

In fact, only the neurotic can be brought to the insight that he must keep an open mind. He has learned the hard way that he must discount his feelings to some extent.

As has been said often, but not better than by Artemus Ward:

Can Bill Giles & co explain this without inducing mirth in the audience:

Last year scientists blamed global warming for decreasing snowfall in the Himalayas. This year record-breaking snowfall has been blamed on global warming. This ‘trend’ in increased snowfall is predicted to continue in coming years. In climate science, anything goes…

Apparently, it does exist. It is made in Toronto. A relative was there last month, but it was not offered at her hotel.

A point. There is talk of “Parliament this…” and “Parliament that…” but the British Constitution does not have this concept. It is only “The Queen in Parliament” who matters. In other words anything without the Royal Assent is not only null and void as law but, strictly, meaningless.

You can bet your life the BBC has promoted Bill Giles to say this. They are now going full steam ahead with climate fake news. This is now just another way of ramping up the lies at the tax payers expense. It is noticeable that the Daily Mail is going this way too.

  13. March 21, 2019 11:36 am

There is one thing that Bill Giles and his alarmist chums do not seem to have taken account of, and that is that by banging on and on about the dangers of climate change there is a real risk of the public getting climate change fatigue and switching off entirely.

  14. March 21, 2019 12:49 pm

Here is another bit of tragic news for the “climate change” clamors.

Gosh, dang, it has just been announced that with all of the rain and record snowfalls, California is now drought free. Yes, boys and girls, the predictions that California was in a state of perpetual, irreversible drought have been scuttled. All California reservoirs are now full.

But, but…..the “scientists” said it was all doom and gloom as far as they could see with perpetual drought……

Oh, well, on to the next crisis…..

Did you pick that up from the BBC?

      • March 22, 2019 11:02 am

Nope!! I live in West Virginia and that news was on our radio national news and also stressed by Rush Limbaugh.

Just checked on my Rush app. as he also did a Morning Update on it on March 19. According to the update, in December 2017, droughts forever were predicted in California by climate models due to the fact that Trump pulled us out of the Paris Climate Accord and the fast-melting Arctic ice would trigger endless droughts in CA (LA Times). This was predicted for the “near future.”

Fast forward to the “near future”: March 14, 2019–the same LA Times announces that California is drought free for the first time in nearly a decade due to high snowfalls and rains. All reservoirs are full. They forgot to mention their dire predictions of a little more than two years ago.

I lost any trust in Bill Giles a long time ago when he hung out to dry his subordinate forecaster, Michael Fish after the famous ‘don’t worry , there won’t be an hurricane’ incident. While Fish made the initial error during the forecast that followed the early evening news, Giles failed to correct the forecast after the late evening news, even though, by then , he had more up-to-date information. Because Fish’s comment made for a better sound bite, the msm picked on him and Giles kept a low profile .

    • March 21, 2019 1:32 pm

I re-watched that Michael Fish forecast a while ago and he simply told a lady in Florida that there was no hurricane on its way to her.
Just bad luck that shortly after that forecast there were unpredicted hurricane force winds in southern England.
Don’t let the truth spoil the fun, though.

In the US, they are already. Only some local weather forecasts are actually forecasts and not propaganda pieces.
