Christian Aid’s Blatant Climate Propaganda For Schools

May 4, 2019

By Paul Homewood

christian aid 4[11454]

Someone sent me this teachers study aid being circulated around schools by Christian Aid.

Far from being an educational aid, it is little more than insidious propaganda aimed at young kids.

It is so full of inaccuracies, exaggerations and significant omissions that it is hard to know where to start!

But just a few notable items:

1) The front cover conflates “fumes” with “climate change”

2) They talk exclusively of emissions per capita. While this is relevant, much more so are total emissions. Would any child looking at this appreciate that the UK only accounts for 1% of the world’s CO2? Or that China’s emissions are nearly double the US?

Nor is there any mention of emission trends, which would show how rapidly emissions in China and India have been rising in the last decade or so.

3) There is one extremely dishonest section, which:

a) conflates GHG and pollution

b) accuses the UK of “harming the environment”

c) States that nearly every country has committed to reducing GHGs.

4) They repeat the extreme weather lie

5) They mention sea levels, but don’t provide any perspective, ie that seas have been rising steadily since the 19thC, and that the rate is around 7 inches/century. Or that at least part of this is due to natural warming since the ending of the Little Ice Age (which no doubt none of the pupils will ever have been told about.

6) They provide a puff for green energy tariffs, but don’t say that the school will only get green energy if it signs up for one. Or that green subsidies are costing their families hundreds of pounds a year.

Perhaps Christian Aid should be encouraging schools to turn off all mains supply of electricity and gas, and instead install a few solar panels and wind mills.

7) What you can do – there is a section offering suggestions about what individuals can do.

However worthy it might be to get individuals to take some responsibility, surely children should be told that nothing they do will make the slightest difference to the climate, even if every person in the country did the same.

Or are they afraid to acquaint kids with harsh reality?

8) Finally, there is actually no mention of the amount of warming seen in the last century or so.

If children were shown a graph of day to day temperature variations during the year, and then shown the tiny rise in average temperatures since 1900, they might actually decide that the whole thing is not worth getting paranoid about!

Surely any study aids provided to schools should show all of the relevant facts in a balanced way, so as to encourage pupils to analyse them and come to their own conclusions.

Where for instance is there any discussion about the pros and cons of a warmer against a colder climate? That more people die of cold than heat, or the effects on food production of a colder world?

This package from Christian Aid fails to do that in any sense, and is little more than outright propaganda. How can headteachers allow it into their school? And is the D of E aware of it?

    First question in the ‘quiz’:

Which of the following does NOT release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere:

    a) Trees

    b) Cows

    c) Cars

Perhaps the propagandist who designed that leaflet is unaware trees transpire water vapour.

“… a large oak tree can transpire 40,000 gallons (151,000 liters) per year.”

Trees, like all plants, respire, so they do release CO2.

(It’s true they fix more than they release overall, but it’s still an asinine question.)

Second question in quiz is also wrong. India produces far more POLLUTION than UK. In fact I think Mumbai is the most polluted city in the world! If UK produces more CO2 than India now, it won’t do for long!

    • Grimwig permalink

Agree, but with CO2 at, say, 800ppm, they would transpire about 50% less H2O.

Are there any Physicists, chemists and engineers on Paul’s blog who could endorse a suitably worded letter to Christian Aid, the D of E and individual school head teachers to challenge this nonsense?

It’s all well and good Paul and individuals writing to the BBC about their blatant lying to the public but we watch this type of thing going on every day with our children and grandchildren.

Could we could mount our own campaign to present the other side of the argument.

There’s only so much Paul can do in terms of communicating to others, and his blog provides a great rallying point, but I think his strength lies in his factual research which is, in my opinion, amazing.

Perhaps some of us could get our heads together and use this blog as a source of grass-root information to produce well presented, informative letters and leaflets to schools. Perhaps put together presentations for local groups many of us are involved in, business clubs, the local pub or women’s institute etc.

Huh, you’d think that ANY teacher worth their salt would know SOME basic science abou half of this drivel. If not then, what DOES it say about the quality of our teachers? I assumed this stuff was for Primary schools, I know that in Scotland, at lest, a lot of Pr School Teachers have NO Science or Other Qualifications – only a Teacher training Ceritificate, which came as quite a shock to me when OUR Bairns were being taught. Seems like they get taught “Parrot Fashion” by folk who really do have NO IDEA about their subject matter. Strange but true. …

Hot Scot. I had been thinking the same ie, about contacting schools in Dublin to ask them to allow climate science sceptics give talks to at least somewhat counterbalance the relentless climate alarmist propaganda across all media platforms. And then saintly Greta arrived. Game over. Only doubt now is when the first high profile climate suicide will happen.

Have sent this letter to my local Education office, feel free to copy and adjust:

      Dear Sirs

A document from Christian Aid called ‘Fumes or Futures’ has come to my attention and I am told it is being distributed to Primary schools across the country. I have grandchildren in school and I speak from a background in Science, having once been a Chemistry A-level teacher.

One of their first questions asked in this pack is Which one of the following does not release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere?
      A Trees B Cows C Cars
Well, as it happens, all three release greenhouse gases, and it would be bad science to suggest the answer is trees. A large tree releases thousands of gallons of water every year and it also releases CO2. (Water is, of course, a greenhouse gas)

Another question asks if the Indian or the UK people produce most pollution?
The answer given is the UK, because of the large amount of CO2 given off by each of us going about our daily lives. A BIG problem here is that CO2 is not ‘pollution’ – it is a life-giving gas (in photosynthesis CO2 combines with water to produce plant food). Independent Courts in the USA have stated categorically that CO2 should never be called a pollutant.

There is a well known experiment that we can try at home – 2 ice cubes into a cup, top up with water to the brim, allow ice to melt and check how much water spills out (answer – none – due to something called ‘Hydrogen Bonding’) In this pack, they mess the idea up completely — as they try to show that melting ice will cause massive coastal flooding.

I could go on, but now you have the picture – this is Primary Science at its very worst, with so many young minds to poison.

I appreciate that a Primary school teacher is overloaded with Grammar and Number work, and I know they will be glad for any help in delivering topics such as Climate Science. Schools should avoid this publication because it is so full of false facts and error.

      Thanks for your attention

Education Act – ‘Political indoctrination’ and ‘Duty to secure balanced treatment of political issues’.

No doubt there’s some way to worm around it.

Cyclone Fani – 1.2 Million people evacuated in 12 hours so very low loss of life. It would take that long to charge up a battery bus. All the systems and infrastructure that enabled the cyclone to be forecast and spotted/tracked, and to run the evacuation operation, were made possible by the wealth created from, and the direct use of, fossil fuels. If the area were powered by windmills and solar panels it would take years to replace them all.

It’s not obvious what age of kids this propaganda is aimed at. One would hope most kids would ignore such a pack of lies.

Has anybody any idea why Christian Aid do this propaganda? Is it all to do with the usual corrupt charities’ find-raising activities?

Phillip, it might have been a little spelling error on your part, i.e. ‘find raising’ instead of ‘fund raising’ but, in any event you’ve actually hit the nail on the head. Increasingly, all many of these, once noble, charities care about now is finding money, not holding true to their original aims and aspirations. Christian Aid, a charity I once supported vigorously in my youth, have simply jumped on the climate change bandwagon to garner more funds. If you actually analyse now how much of their funds trickle down to grassroots practical support on the ground as opposed to lining the pockets of their handsomely paid bureaucrats and middlemen, in comparison to how they operated 30 years ago, you might be shocked. Or, perhaps not! In any event, their current, anti-fossil policies, aren’t actually helping the poor of the Third World, they are screwing them over.

Indeed… if children and their adult teachers, including “green” politicians, were shown the annual year-over-year global temperature chart (using the NASA GISS data), they would see that nothing has happened since at least 1970..almost imperceptible. But, they are shown the total anomaly chart and it is that which looks scary.

And those trees? Yes, they respire, but more than that the oxygen they created is used to recycle them when they die…no long-term capture-and-store. The same for algae. The organic carbon returns as CO2 and water. Back to “square-one”.

Any reliable graph that shows the Minoan/Roman/Medieval/Modern warm periods should torpedo any panic over the current situation.

If the current (manipulated/dubious) temperature data isn’t put in context of natural variability over hundreds, thousands, and millions of years, it is highly misleading.

    Hi Paul,

Not a comment on the Christian Aid post but…

The alarmist headline all over the media (BBC included) is –

“The United Nations says we could have just 11 years left to limit a climate change catastrophe.”

It was supposed to be contained in this but I didn’t find it –

    Click to access SR15_SPM_version_stand_alone_LR.pdf

If anything the IPCC 32 page document says something quite different –

/A.1 Human activities are estimated to have caused approximately 1.0°C of global warming5
above pre-industrial levels, with a likely range of 0.8°C to 1.2°C. Global warming is likely to reach 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052 if it continues to increase at the current rate. (high confidence) (Figure SPM.1) {1.2}/

I read this to mean that 1.5 deg C might be reached between 11 and 33 years ahead and implies a high degree of uncertainty?

It is clear that the alarmism is from the media and not the IPCC itself?

    Best Regards

l looked up Christian Aid and saw that it now allied to ACT alliance which looks political though it claims many churches as members. .I hope this is because they joined before the organistio was taken. It seems to have a large Climate Action component. I noticed a distinct political agenda in individual Anglican churches a few years ago.. One reason I left. The clergy are mostly not educated in science nowadays so are easily deceived but they are obdurate in their climate beliefs and don,t realise they are political… These organisations should be investigated by scientifically qualified people and exposed in the newspapers.. the only way to counter them.

Christian Aid, like most development charities, is avowedly Left-wing. And like many Left-wing organisationsns they see climate change as the ideal reason to destroy capitalism and free markets.

And of course like all these people, they simply love telling everyone else what to do.

They have no idea that ‘solutions to climate change’ is an oxymoron. Their ideas will backfire bigtime if implemented.

The poster mentions tropical storms in the Philippines. My wife is from the Philippines they have a long history of tropical storms due to being in the tropics. The deadliest was in 1881 and the wettest in 1911. I witnessed the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991 this did effect the global climate lowering the temperature to a small extent 0,5c between 1991 – 1993
It It ejected roughly 10,000,000,000 tonnes. So now we know how to cool the planet just shove this much into the atmosphere every few years. Easy

Perhaps the Christian Aid people ought to include some economics in their brainwashing efforts, they could never question the religion. Would the kids really support much of the UK’s money being diverted to something that has no measurable, or real, benefit at the expense of health, education etc?

Also, in doing their bit would they give up being driven to school, comfortable school heating and hot showers after sports etc…… … that would be a real test of conviction!

I have sent a complaint to Christian Aid I suggest others do as well.
    Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to complain about the pamphlet Fumes and futures?
That Christian aid is involved in producing and distributing to schools,
here is a link that critiques some of the basic points.
You should not be involved in spreading this misinformed and propaganda to school children.
CLIMATE CHANGE is fast becoming a new religion. Vast resources that could be used to help the poor are being wasted on this nonsense.
The result of implementing changes to tackle this imaginary CLIMATE CHANGE is and will increasingly be higher energy bills.
The old and poor can not afford these increased energy bills.
They will have to choose between heat and food. This is and will increasingly lead to death of pensioners and children suffering.
One item in particular caught my attention Glory and Lanie : The Philippines and the tropical storms in 2013. My wife is from the Philippines they have a long history of tropical storms due to being in the tropics. The deadliest was in 1881 and the wettest in 1911.
I have no doubt that christian aid has received funding to push the this CLIMATE CHANGE propaganda.
But this will misinform our youth and hurt and even kill the poor.
I hope you will raise this with your directors and consider if this is what you should be doing.

All gases thicken the atmosphere. Water vapour has a lower molecular weight than dry air, and so lowers its density.

Bjorn Lomborg calculated that you would need to use ecofreindly bags thousands of times to have less impact than using a plastic bag. Shopping once a week they need to last several lifetimes.

If the sea levels rise in Bangladesh the Dutch will sell their dike building expertise there to prevent inundation.

The Paris agreement contains no commitments to cut emissions. It only records aspirations for some countries to do so, while committing to regular meetings and lots of air miles to talk about it.

Electric cars can be less green than diesels depending on how the electricity to charge them is generated. That depends on your local power station which will dominate the supply you use. Modern diesels are greener than modern petrol cars.

Alternative ways to save water: push up the price while not investing in supply as the EU Water Directive demands, or repeal the directive and build a water store a.k.a. reservoir.

I know the names of lots of soon to be ex-politicians who will lose their seats because they indulge in climate change hysteria and worshipping the child goddess Greta.

Climate change should be tackled by injecting some honesty into its study. This blog is an excellent example of that.

A coal fired power station converts energy from the sun from many millions of years ago to electricity.

My understanding of cosmology is that matter and energy are interchangeable. If the universe continues to expand then eventually all matter will decay into energy that becomes increasingly diffuse. The laws of thermodynamics require disorder to increase, so ultimately energy is not renewable.

You failed to account for the lifetime and cost of bulbs. This approach is typical of green zealots.
