Germany’s New “Record Temperature” Is The Result Of Lousy Siting

Not only is the UK Met Office desperate to declare a new record temperature from an extremely dodgy site in Cambridge, but a newly claimed record temperature in Germany also appears to be a cheat:

During last week’s record-setting European heat wave, Germany’s previous record of 40.3C was impressively shattered by the measurement station located at the northwest city of Lingen, near the Dutch border, some 50 kilometers from where I live. The German DWD weather service and media loved it!

Controversial siting

Yet, controversy now swirls about the new record setting measurement since it has come to light that the measurement is fraught with some considerable siting issues.

As the photo published by T-online here shows, the station is located right near a DWD office building, is shielded from the wind by grown trees and is located not far from a public swimming pool.

Meteorologist Michael Theusner told t-online.de: “The monthly average of the daily highs in Lingen has been deviating more and more upwards from the average of the highs in Lower Saxony since 2010.” The station has become increasingly shielded and thus tends to heat up more.

Swiss veteran meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann wrote the extra heat possibly heating the station by 3 up to degrees!

DWD accepts overheated reading

Germany’s DWD national weather service has even confirmed that the station’s siting is no longer adequate and that a move to a new site had been already long planned. But despite the acknowledged poor siting, the DWD went ahead and confirmed the reading as valid. The 42.6°C reading now stands as Germany’s new all-time recorded high temperature, no matter how questionable the reading may be.

Valid? How does Lingen compare to other temperature stations located nearby? I did a check.

Fifty kilometers to the east of Lingen where I live (Quakenbrück), my home thermometer showed a high of 38.2°C. That’s unofficial of course, but it makes the Lingen reading suspicious. So I decided to compare Lingen to the other official stations nearby to see if their readings were as hot as Lingen’s.

The surrounding readings do indeed confirm meteorologist Kachelmann’s gut suspicion. Lingen readings are suspiciously 2 – 3C hotter than its neighboring stations.

Full post here.

Quite apart from this dodgy siting, it is a fact that there are many more sites where temperatures are monitored than there used to be. Thus there is much more chance of a local hot spot getting monitored.

National records should only be acceptable at sites with long records, at least 100 years, and with clearly identifiable high quality siting which is not impacted by urban or other biases.

Unfortunately for the integrity of science, the UK and German Met Offices are far too reliant on government climate funding to be relied upon to be honest and objective in these matters.

Heatwaves are extreme weather events, but research shows that with climate change they are likely to become more frequent. Met Office projections show that heatwaves with the intensity of last summer could occur on average as regularly as every other year by the middle of the century.

Wow what a scary prediction. So In 30 years time alternate years might be as hot a last summer. How will we survive?

The CAGW scam, in its present state of development, requires a continual PUSH in Government to bulldoze through the practical and funding difficulties with new “green” projects. In a sense the scammers have already gathered in the low-lying fruit.

I doubt the new Johnson Government will dare to come out and proscribe the Cult, but – looking at the sort of people the new ministers are* – it may excuse people who do not go to the hills to worship! And this may mitigate the damage to our lives – if this Government survives.

      * I do not see Rees-Mogg as a worshiper of Gaia!

More frequent than what? Piffle to scare people, signifying nothing.

After 30 years of global warming, we are having FEWER extreme weather events here than before. My weather is better; how is yours?

As one commenter put it these sites are fine for knowing what the local in situ temperatures are i.e. in urban heat environments, but not for statistical use for climate. Otherwise we should recognise the older recorded values during the 19thC where 100 degrees was recorded as well.

Most of my 40 year working life was spent in high volume electrical manufacturing (fuses), starting as quality engineer and ending up as general manager. We used statistics to analyse problems and improve yields. The first thing in any analysis was to identify the outliers (readings statistically improbable) and IGNORE them.

The new Belgian record may be partly sampling bias, the Kleine Brogel airbase is in the warmest corner of Belgium (furthest from the always cold North Sea), and has only been there since 1974. How many other stations are there in that corner?

So we have no way of knowing if was hotter there during the 1930s, or indeed any period that might have shown warmth before 1974 when the talk was of a new ice age.

Clear, concise, robust, confirmation bias. But they cannot see this because they do not want to see it.

We are human, since the dawn of civilisation we have always believed our actions the influence the climate, it is in our DNA.

Most things in life don’t matter and some things don’t matter at all.

It’s ok for people who are able to see beyond the lies, but our young people don’t see how they are manipulated and they are the ones who will have to survive the extreme weather and cold when the shit hits the fan.
It’s like Woodstock, thousands of people tripped out and having a love-in while the slaughter went on and on. Our heroes, the ones we remember by name, weren’t the ones sent to die in Vietnam, but the ones making music in the parks.
I remember just being into my teens and not getting a grip on the reality of what was happening. It’s such a come down to realise that lies are what you believe.

And Jo Nova highlights a joke of a weather station in South Australia. Even more astonishing is the current location the improved version. It used to be on somebody’s drive. The BoM seem to be the worst national service in the world.

Would it be too cynical to say that it doesn’t really matter? After all, the “science is settled” and we must act quickly to put a stop to it…ASAP or by 2050 for sure.
