Greenland Meltdown Hoax

August 13, 2019

By Paul Homewood

You will recall those ridiculous stories about Greenland heatwaves and ice sheet meltdown, which were circulating just a couple of weeks ago:

As I pointed out at the time, they were simply not true. And, now the actual data bears this out.

The Surface Mass Balance (SMB) of the ice sheet, while below average is still well above that of 2012, and also within the historical range.. Most of the shortfall this year is because of dry weather during the winter, hence lack of snow.

[The light grey band shows differences from year to year. For any calendar day, the band shows the range over the 30 years (in the period 1981-2010), however with the lowest and highest values for each day omitted. ]

Although this year will likely end up around 200Gt down on average, the last two years finished about 300Gt above average.

Note that the SMB does not reflect calving – for full explanation, see here.

As usual, climate alarmists cherry pick an odd day or two, and call it climate change:

But what about that heatwave?

Well at Nuuk on the west coast, daytime temperatures were in the 50s for the first ten days, peaking at 60F on the 3rd.

None of this is unusual for August, which averages 48.9F, and has a record of 73F, according to Wiki.

Over on the east at Tasiilaq, where daytime temperatures average 50.7F, temperatures have been below normal on most days:

For Greenland as a whole, most of the island except for the far north has been colder than usual in the last five days, and with cold in the forecast for the rest of the month, we are probably already at maximum melt:

But you would have guessed none of this from the fraudulent reports being bandied around a week or two ago.

Alarmists just love to present scary graphs, with y-axes intended to deceive.

As the excellent Willis Eschenbach reminded us on WUWT the other day, talk of billions of tonnes of ice loss is deliberately intended to alarm.

Far from the Greenland ice cap rapidly disappearing before our very eyes, the amount of ice melting is literally just a drop in the ocean:

Lies and deception are what Climate “Science” and the majority of the reporting on it is all about. Mother nature just doesn’t care what they say. Nor does our sleepy sun:
Nor do I. Anyone that has been paying attention for any time knows that Fake News does not just apply to politics.

Right……… no time have I ever set store in what these types aver.

Indeed, when they start on advocating this sort of trash, I always wonder what is the real agenda and surmise that, whatever his real motives maybe, this sort and his ilk only wish harm to our way of life, to western society and through promulgating whatever means to bring about the destruction of the western model.

We must ban summer immediately. It’s obviously almost as bad as CO2.

NO!!! It’s already winter here for 9 months out of the year. without a few months in summer to thaw, I’m a goner. LOL

That what these scammers are. They jumped from few hot days in France to a few hot in England to a few hot in Greenland. Woo woo woo. There it is “climate change”

It is my 72nd birthday today and I despair for the future of this country in so many ways – not least, the AGW scam. Unless the ascendancy of the greenblob can be reversed by people using their brains rather than emotions to make considered and relevant decisions based on the actual facts, this downward spiral into another Dark Age will become unstoppable.

Bertie, I couldn’t agree more. I am six years your junior but have come to exactly the same conclusion.

As you say, it is not runaway climate change that threatens the world, it is runaway greenblob!

Bertie, congratulations! But do not fear. These scams and fears are really nothing more than froth on the surface, a sign -albeit an unplasant sign- of the surplus of our western societies, when we can indulge in such expensive nonsense. As soon as a real crises raises its head, this will be forgotten and the fearmongers relegated back to oblivion -until the next time we can afford such parasites.

But that is the world we live in, politicians, scientists and journalists tell untruths, wars have been fought on the basis of their lies, millions died because nobody said “UH”, and the world goes around uncaring.

    Not +2.7 & +4.7, but -2 deg C

    From Google Translate:

“The inland ice temperatures in Greenland at the beginning of August were high, but there was no record.

This is stated by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), who can now confirm that record measurements of 2.7 and 4.7 degrees measured at Summit weather station on the inland ice on August 1 and 2 were misleading.

    – We have looked at several observations in the area and estimate that the temperature has not been above zero degrees in the area. Our suspicion that plus 4.7 degrees was too hot, kept up, says meteorologist at DMI Herdis Damberg.

Observations from other weather stations have shown that the temperature instead was at minus two degrees.

According to the meteorologist, the error measurement is due to the incorrect distance between the meter and the surface due to snow.
The lack of distance to the ice has provided poor ventilation, and it is also crucial to what a meter shows, says Herdis Damberg.

Furthermore, it is difficult for meteorologists to get to Summit weather station, as it lies far inland on the inland ice in a harsh climate.
By comparison, the average temperature for July, which is usually the hottest month on the Summit, is minus 12 degrees. Therefore, minus two degrees is still relatively high for the area, which is at 3202 meters altitude.
    – It’s not a record, but it’s warm with minus two degrees. It was the heat that lay around Europe that moved up to Iceland and on to Greenland, says Herdis Damberg.
The warmest temperatures measured at Summit are 2.2 degrees, which were measured in 2012 and 2017.
    – You could say that this is good news in a climate perspective. There are probably many who take to the forehead and say it was very good, it was not four degrees, says the meteorologist.”

It does seem to me that there is a note of unease, not yet a note of panic, in the lies and exaggerations of the alarmists. It’s not really going well here in UK. The BBC/Met Office conspiracy’s .new normal’ summer hot weathers has collapsed into rain and cold. Because reporting by both and consequent civic attention is unbelievably NARROW, nobody looks outside the UK’s typically variable WEATHER to, for example, the interesting things happening in the USA (Nevada snow pack, widespread cold, Californian ‘drought’, absence of hurricanes (lucky Greta!)). So what happens here becomes CLIMATE and that will start to bore the masses quite soon.

The BBC won’t worry about the lack of heat, they will just switch to ‘extreme rainfall events’ – report the perfectly normal localized floods that occur in an average British summer owing to thundery showers/rain fronts – as climate doom.

The Not A Lot blog “Sky Abandon Facts In Favour Of Climate Propaganda” (JUNE 25, 2019) reproduced the summary of the Sky News Special Report: A New Climate – Changing the Future, in which they claimed that “scientists working for the United Nations warned the impacts of climate change would become rapidly more severe once the average global temperature rose past 1.5C (34.7F)”.

The blog didn’t specifically highlight the ludicrous Celsius/Fahrenheit conversion, but as I told New Scientist’s Feedback column (JUNE 27) a rise of 34.7F above pre-industrial levels certainly seems worrying, but must be correct. After all, if you Google “1.5 Celsius to Fahrenheit” you get “Celsius 1.5 = Fahrenheit 34.7”. So that proves it! (Just don’t do it in Kelvin where 1.5C = 274.65K).

Could it be that a lot of the climate-change hand-wringing is from this misunderstanding? Those who still prefer the Fahrenheit scale really think that we’re expecting at least a 34.7F rise in temperature.

Sad to say, today’s edition of Country Life (which seems lately to be, somewhat unusually, ploughing the popular greenblob furrow) has included a comment about Greenland ice (or lack of it!) under their normally acceptable “Bad week for” section:
“Arctic Weather: A heatwave caused more than 197 billion tons of ice to melt in Greenland during July and wildfires broke out across several polar regions.”
As a subscriber – to what I have always thought of as an excellent and, more importantly, apolitical magazine – I would be grateful if one of you properly scientific-type bods out there would provide me with the correct ammunition to respond to this nonsense.

The green loonies are still desperately trying to find anything to back up their Global warming lies .
So they go all out on Greenland ice melting .
It is the middle of summer & warm weather coming up from Africa has made Western Europe
a bit warmer & even reached Greenland .
But in a few months it will be Winter & the Greenland ice sheet will be freezing again .
Over the last few years the total ice mass has been increasing .

But if it did not turn cold in the Artic winters anymore ? , & the ice continued to melt at this rate , then in 12,500 years the Greenland ice sheet would be HALF GONE.
