UN flies in 5,000 people to Salt Lake to complain about fossil fuels

August 31, 2019

By Paul Homewood

How does the United Nations convince people that they are super serious in their outrage about fossil fuels? How about flying 4,000 people from all over the world in fossil-fueled jet airplanes to isolated Salt Lake City to whine about it? Sounds like a good plan to the United Nations bureaucracy, which is sponsoring a sustainability and climate change conference this week in Salt Lake City.

The UN brags that up to 4,000 people are likely to attend, representing more 300 nongovernmental organizations (read, environmental activist groups) and more than 80 countries. There is no compelling agenda, no compelling actions items, and no expected meaningful outcome from the conference. It is simply an opportunity for leftist global activists to get together and express outrage about economic freedom and the existential global climate disruption that is the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced – surpassing Genghis Khan, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, the Black Plague, smallpox, AIDS, and the threat of nuclear war combined.

Salt Lake City is an isolated, medium-sized city with little national or international media impact. Most people flying to Salt Lake City for the UN conference will have to make at least one or two connecting flights to get there, exacerbating their carbon footprint for the conference. Why didn’t the UN choose New York or Brussels for such a conference? Because, silly, UN bureaucrats get tired of New York and Brussels and want to go someplace really cool and fun for their events. Carbon footprint, shmarbon footprint.

Seriously, now, if global warming is the greatest existential threat facing humanity, as the UN and Democratic presidential hopefuls claim, why would the UN induce 4,000 people to carbon-bomb the atmosphere with 4,000 multi-leg, roundtrip flights to whine about it? Almost nobody (other than us wonks here at CFACT) really cares or will be paying attention to the conference. Couldn’t they hold the conference at UN facilities in New York or Brussels? Or better yet, couldn’t the conference can be held online for a much lower carbon footprint?

The truth is, Salt Lake City is a beautiful place. There are breathtaking mountains all around. Posh Park City is just a 20-minute drive away. Environmental leftists may even catch a glimpse of part-time nearby resident Robert Redford. Holding the conference in Salt Lake City is an opportunity for the self-righteous environmental left to travel to a gorgeous city, take a nice vacation at taxpayer or employer expense, and all the while compliment each other on how they really CARE about climate change. All while carbon-bombing the atmosphere in order to travel there.

Makes you wonder just how existential they believe their contrived climate crisis truly is….

It’s funny how they never go to places like Nuuk for their jollies!

@$1,000 each (minimum) $5m up in smoke.

    Taxpayers money of course.

You speak too soon Paul – another 10 years and Nuuk will be a tropical paradise – the Mirror and the Telegraph say so.

Maybe a bit too cold for believers in global warming.

Many years ago I went to a conference in Salt Lake City, and also to conferences relatively nearby in Sun Valley and Idaho Falls. All fabulous places to visit. I would highly recommend going there to all genuine climate scientists who love their CO2, want to increase their “carbon footprint” and love to see the planet greening before their very eyes..

They’d be more credible if they held their gabfests to whinge about global warming in Oymyakon, Yakutia, Russia:

Fear not. They will all have paid for carbon off-setting so everything will be alright then. Easy peasy stuff this climate change activism.

One massive “down the pub” exercise! That’s where you go to moan about climate, fuel prices, political idiots, rent-seekers, the state of the world! Down the pub! A lot cheaper and the beer’s better.

Yes, and it’s vegan as well.

        Not true…

Brewmasters, winemakers, and distillers may include animal ingredients in their products directly, or they might use them in the processing and filtration.

When making the product, dairy, honey, and other things are ingredients in the final recipe.

When filtering the drinks prior to bottling, companies can use things like isinglass (from fish bladder,) gelatin, egg whites, and sea shells, among other things.

Savenergy, you are quite right. I’d forgotten about that but it was a joke anyway.

I don’t use any in the beer I make so I guess its vegan beer. I didn’t think I’d ever enjoy being a vegan so much.

Can the UN stop gravestones being washed away?

BBC calls it just ‘a flood’. As mentioned on here before, it was a GREAT CATASTROPHIC COUNTRYWIDE FLOOD, various extreme weather events, 3 years before the CO2 control knob was installed and climate change invented.

“In the second half of March 1947, the most catastrophic river floods for at least 200 years occurred in the United Kingdom. The flooding, which inundated nearly all the main rivers in the South, Midlands, and the Northeast of England, was notable for its origins, regional extent, and duration.Impacting thirty out of forty English counties over a two week period, around 700,000 acres of land were underwater. Tens of thousands of people were temporarily displaced from their homes, and thousands of acres of crops were lost.”

    Good link for reference.

Time to ask Greta T what she thinks about the choice of venue and access. Perhaps her mother will advise on the words to use..

She was raised to prominence by a graduate of Al Gore’s ‘college’. She’s such great propaganda she’ll be under direct control of the climate alarmist elite by now. Every speech and public action is carefully choreographed. You should have head the BBC fawning over her on breakfast this morning – they are completely out of touch will reality. There is nothing spontaneous or credible about her. She is just a manufactured brainwashed cult icon.

Climate Change is an “existential crisis” so Greta, UN and the green young ones say. It is all the fault of us oldies (they say), we apparently do not know how the world works.

War Memorials in every town in UK list the names of young men who faced an “existential crisis” they had a choice, fight to the death, freedom or despotic government, war or peace.

What would Greta and her like choose? That generation of dead heroes chose fight to the death so Greta could live in freedom.

Not just the serving men. Consider what the civilians went through during the blitz. Can you imagine this snowflake generation coping with that? They are sheltered from all the realities of life and fed an undiluted left-wing mantra with no basis in reality.
St G has apparently decided to take a sabbatical from her education for a twelvemonth, which is the opposite of what she needs.

My engineering research on the very small areas where temperatures were rising after 1980 led to the book – POLAR BEARS IN THE HOT TUB – Their Future and Ours.
NO! NO!, NO! CO2 has not caused that rise in temperature at the North Pole.
Rising Magma along the Atlantic Ridge north of Iceland & Svalbard heated the Arctic Ocean, melting the ice. Earthquakes from rising magma are now silent – magma is not rising. When the hot rock cools, the Arctic will completely freeze over again.
We are entering an ice age – expect lots of winter snow, summer rain and short growing season in Canada. The Polar Bears are thriving.
I do recommend my own book for 85 pages of facts; 25 cents a page.
