Stop Indulging This Spoilt, Little Brat!

Enough is enough!

Am I the only person who is sick to the back teeth having to listen to this whiney, spoilt little child lecturing the rest of us?

Yahoo describe her latest speech to the UN conference:

image

United Nations (United States) (AFP) – A visibly angry Greta Thunberg berated world leaders as she addressed a UN climate summit on Monday, accusing them of betraying her generation by failing to tackle greenhouse gas emissions and asking "How dare you?"

The Swedish teen, who has become the global face of the growing youth movement against climate inaction, began by telling her audience: "My message is that we’ll be watching you," eliciting laughter.

But it was soon clear that the tone of the message would be very serious.

"This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back at school on the other side of the ocean," the 16-year-old, who is taking a year off from her studies, said.

"You come to us young people for hope. How dare you?" she thundered.

"You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words, yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering, people are dying, entire ecosystems are collapsing.

"We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is the money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!"

She added that in her talks with leaders, she had been told that the youth were being heard and the urgency was understood.

"But no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that, because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act, then you would be evil, and that I refuse to believe."

Thunberg, who often appears uncomfortable in the limelight and is seen as a reluctant leader, then detailed the various targets that were being missed, heightening the risk of "irreversible chain reactions beyond human control."

She also took aim at the summit called by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to ask countries to expand their commitments saying: "There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today because these numbers are too uncomfortable, and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is."

"You are failing us," she concluded. "But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal.

"The eyes of all future generations, are upon you, And if you choose to fail us. I say, we will never forgive you!"

Betraying her generation? Stolen her dreams?

If she had not bunked off school, they might have taught her a bit of history.

This is what primary school kids here are taught about how children lived in Victorian times:

image

Children were often forced to work almost as soon as they could walk. This was not something new to the Victorian period as children had always been been expected to work for hundreds of years. Many were used as cheap labour.

What was wrong with the working conditions for children during the Victorian times?

  • Children worked very long hours with little breaks and no fresh air.
  • They often worked in very dangerous conditions resulting in injuries or even death.
  • Very young children were expected to work
  • There was no education for the poor, so it was very unlikely they could get better paid jobs when they were older.
  • Children were paid very little because they were younger

Why didn’t children refuse to work?

Most children had no choice – they needed to work to help their families earn enough money to live.

What kind of jobs did children do?

The lucky children got apprenticed in a trade, the less lucky ones worked on farms or helped with the spinning. When new types of work appeared with the development of industries and factories, it seemed perfectly natural to use children for work that adults couldn’t do; Crawling underneath machinery or sitting in coal mines to open and close the ventilation doors.

Chimney Sweeps

Chimney sweeping was a job children could do better than adults. Small boys (starting at the age of 5 or 6 years) would be sent scrambling up inside the chimney to scrape and brush soot away. They came down covered in soot, and with bleeding elbows and knees.

"I have two boys working for me. after work their arms and legs are bleeding so I rub them with salt-water before sending them up another chimney" Sweep Master

A Victorian boyThe chimneys were usually very narrow (in some cases as small as 30cm) and twisted. Children often got stuck or froze with terror in the cramped darkness – in these cases the Master Chimney Sweeper, would simply light the fire underneath to ‘encourage’ them to get on with their work.

The work was dangerous and painful. Some boys got stuck and died of suffocation.

"I never got stuck myself but some of my friends have and were taken out dead." boy aged 8

In 1832 the use of boys for sweeping chimneys was forbidden by law, however, boys continued to be forced through the narrow winding passages of chimneys in large houses.

‘The Water Babies’ by Charles Kingsley, tells the tale of a young sweep, Tom. who drowns while trying to escape from his evil master and comes back to life underwater as a ‘water baby’.

Factories

factoryChildren worked long hours and sometimes had to carry out some dangerous jobs working in factories.

"I start work promptly at 5:00 in the morning and work all day till 9:00 at night. That’s 16 hours! We are not allowed to talk, sit or look out of the window whilst we work. The only day off from work I get is on Sundays, when we have to go to church." Girl aged 9

In textile mills children were made to clean machines while the machines were kept running, and there were many accidents. Many children lost fingers in the machinery and some were killed, crushed by the huge machines.

Young children working in a textile mill

A Victorian girlIn match factories children were employed to dip matches into a dangerous chemical called phosphorous. The phosphorous could cause their teeth to rot and some died from the effect of breathing it into their lungs.

Why were children employed to work in factories?

  • Children were much cheaper than adults as a factory owner did not have to pay them as much.
  • There were plenty of children in orphanages, so they could be replaced easily if accidents did occur.
  • Children were small enough to crawl under machinery to tie up broken threads.

When did young children stop working in textile factories?

1833 the Factory Act was made law. It was now illegal for children under 9 to be employed in textile factories

Street Children

Thousands of poor children worked and lived on the streets. Many were orphans, others were simply neglected. They worked very long hours for very little money. To buy bread, they sold matches, firewood, buttons, flowers or bootlaces, polished shoes, ran errands and swept the crossing places where rich people crossed the busy roads.

Coal Mines

Coal was the main source of power in Victorian times. It was used for cooking and heating, and for driving machinery, trains and steam ships.

Until 1842, children under the age of 10 worked in coal mines

In order to produce more coal, the mines needed more workers and children as young as 5 years old were used to supply this need. They worked for up to 12 hours a day.

cola mine

Trappers

Trappers were children who operated the air doors providing ventilation for the miners. By keeping the fresh air flowing they prevented the build up of dangerous gases. The children would sit in the draft of the doors, cold, damp and very frightened, with little or no light for 12 hours a day.

"I sit in the dark down in the pit for 12 hours a day. I only see daylight on Sundays when I don’t work down the pit. Once I fell asleep and a wagon ran over my leg" Boy aged 7

"I hate the dark, it scares me. I never go to sleep. Sometimes I sing, there is nothing else to do other than open and close the door." Girl aged 8

Drawers

Drawers pulled heavy carts of cut coal to the pits surface with heavy chains around their waists.

" I am a drawer, and work from six o’clock in the morning to six at night. stop about an hour at noon to eat my dinner: I have bread and butter for dinner; I get no drink.

I have a belt round my waist, and a chain passing between my legs, and I go on my hands and feet. The tunnels are narrow and very wet where I work. My clothes are wet through almost all day long." Girl aged 10

Dangers

The coal mines were dangerous places where roofs sometimes caved in, explosions happened and workers often injured themselves.

Below is a small sample of how children were killed working in coal mines (information from http://www.dmm.org.uk)

  • A trapper, only 10 years old killed in an explosion.
  • A horse driver aged 11. Crushed by horse.
  • A driver, aged 14 fell off limmers and was crushed between the tubs and a door.
  • A token keeper aged 14. Crushed by surface wagons on branches.
  • A screenboy aged 12. Crushed by surface wagons.
  • A trapper aged 12. Crushed by tubs.
  • A driver aged 12. Horse fell on him.
  • A bank boy aged 11. Caught by cage.
  • A driver aged 12. Head crushed between tub top and a plank while riding on limmers.
  • A trapper aged 13. Head crushed between cage and bunton while riding to bank.
  • Tub Cleaner, aged 13. Fell down the shaft off a pumping engine.
  • Boy aged 14, drowned.
  • Boy, aged 7. Killed in an explosion.
  • Trapper , aged 9. Killed in an explosion.
  • Driver, aged 14. Crushed against wall by a horse.
  • Screen Boy, aged 15. Head crushed between a tub and screen legs ; too little room.

When did children stop working in the mines?

The Mines Act was passed by the Government in 1847 forbidding the employment of women and girls and all boys under the age of ten down mines. Later it became illegal for a boy under 12 to work down a mine.

Greta and the rest of her generation are lucky to be growing up during an era of prosperity, wellbeing and comfort that would not have been imaginable even just a few decades ago.

This has not happened by coincidence, but as a direct consequence of the efforts and sacrifices of her parents’ generation and their forefathers. It has been made possible by economic development based around plentiful fossil fuels.

And she does not have to look back into history to be thankful. Around the world there are still millions of children who are not lucky enough to have the advantages Greta and her followers enjoy. Yet, selfishly, she does not want them to benefit from the very things she takes for granted.

It is time we stopped indulging this spoilt, little brat.

No Paul, you are not alone. I have some sympathy for her condition (autism often is linked to irrational obsessive behaviours) as I have an autistic grandson. Her parents may be the ones to carry the greater burden of liability given that she seems genuinely distressed and disturbed. What I see is child abuse shamefully carried out on a daily basis in full view of an international audience. I can only hope that one day she will understand just how badly was advised and manipulated.

Agreed. While she is 16, she is also obviously troubled and childlike. I blame her parents for exploiting the child for their own glory. THAT is the cruelty, not what others have done to the planet.

Exactly. Her parents surely must be liable for her not attending school and worse, manipulating her for their own ends,

As you both say, this is serious child abuse and ought to be stopped. Those who applaud her are clearly unthinking and lacking in understanding. All they care about is rabble rousing their trivial new religion.

When people realise this is all a huge exaggeration they will blame Greta and she may not recover. I see a huge breakdown coming for her,

I actually feel sorry for this abused child. She is an expendable tool in the climate change machine. Whoever is behind her and using her, ought to hang their heads in shame. She is clearly being broken under the intolerable strain she is being put under and on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
She was already mentally unstable when they started to use her.

The authorities would already have taken her into care if she had been used as the poster-girl for any millennarian cult other than this one.

bugle; agreed. I too feel deeply sorry for Greta, and especially for the future Greta, who will be out of the limelight, but not out of her illusions. What we saw yesterday, however, was not anger and sorrow, but very poorly performed theater. Greta should have chosen a slower sailing boat, so that she could have had more time to rehearse her act. Maybe the next stage of her odyssey, by train and bus to Chile, will provide opportunities to improve her stagecraft.

So far, I have not seen any information about her homewards journey. Perhaps she will be wafted home by a man-made disatrous storm, or on the back of a unicorn, or riding a benign white bear:

Couldn’t agree more. When a presentation stoops to personal insults you know the presenter has lost the argument. But what do you expect from a teenager with very little real life experience to draw on and who’s every public utterance seems to be delivered by an automaton based on a tightly scripted polemic.
The real problem is the ‘useful idiots’ who think she’s talking sense.

She’s clearly exceptionally intelligent. She needs a proper education to give her a view of all aspects of the issue, and also to give her an understanding of science. I read somewhere recently that she has been home schooled, though I don’t know if that’s true. She has clearly been well and truly indoctrinated, which perhaps her Aspergers doesn’t give her the capability of understanding.

Actually I would gauge her mental age around 11 or 12 years – her earlier anorexia has clearly retarded her development physically (it usually does) and also her brain would have struggled to get the various fats and proteins required.
If she ever recovers from her parents’ abuse she may yet be quite clever if in some rather narrow field.

I always say that people turn to the Left when they are rich enough. Once insulated from the consequences of those they support, they happily talk rot without end. Thunberg is indulged, at every level. She is being used by her parents, her manipulators and even the ‘world leaders’ she feels entitled to berate, due to her being a superior moral and intellectual human being. Prat. Why is the West targeted? The third raters line up with their hands out, using this as an excuse to get money for nothing. China and India see a real cake and eat it scenario. But who will actually say the emperor has no clothes? Trump protects America, but shies away from using real science to shut the anti-capitalists up. GT does look evil though, does she not?

Totally agree Paul. I posted today in the Times that they should not be giving the oxygen of publicity to this brat. Overall a very positive response, but one comment was from a ‘believer’ who thought she was his and millions more standard bearer. My comment back was suggesting he needed urgent help.
Apparently Trump’s comment was that he thought ‘she looks very happy’ ( sarc on).
Unfortunately Paul, we are in a minority. Most don’t care: of those that do, a significant number are foot soldiers of the new feudalism whether they realise it or not.
Computer technology has plunged the human race into an alternative reality without recourse to headsets. Brainwashing by dint of repetition of outcomes that exist only in computer models surrounds us constantly. Climate change and finance/economics are dominated by model outcomes that are passed off as reality.
When I was young I read sci-fi about life after computers, which were abandoned because of the harm they did to human society. Maybe they were not so fanciful after all.

An interesting and apparently well referenced series of articles, Jonathan.

Also available as a book from Amazon.
But link-clickers beware. This examination of Thunberg’s mafiosi backers is written from an extreme green purist standpoint. You will soon come across passages like:-

“Who are “those that lead the way”? Are they referring to Western citizens who can fit all their belongings in a duffle bag? [Here it must be said that the environmental heroes in the West are NOT the Richard Bransons or Leonardo DiCaprios of the world. The real heroes for the environment, due to their almost non-existent environmental footprint, are the homeless – despite the scorn they receive from society as a whole.] Are they referring to the African Maasai who, to this day, literally leave no trace?”

Well, I guess I’d be more sympathetic to a bunch of cow-blood drinking Maasai in their East African homeland than to the likes of DiCaprio & Branson anywhere. But I’m not sure that the Maasai are the best role models for the C.21st. Will that notion catch on? Especially amongst Ruinable Energy moguls, idle students or our saintly Climate Psyentists?

So it is a bit like Huismann’s “PandaLeaks: The Dark Side of the WWF”, a well researched and referenced exposé of the creepy & despicable WWF, but written by another ultra greenie loon.

Read wrongkindofgreen and note the eggregious con artists that have set Thunberg in motion.

Its important children learn about hypocrisy. You could of course ask them “what would you do then” and they would have no idea, and neither do their green blob mentors. They want others to solve the unsolvable! They will grow up, kids nearly always do, but some don’t.

A long time ago I went to school on my bicycle (6 miles each way), judging from the traffic congestion around the school near me, children and teachers and schools nowadays have a much larger carbon footprint.

The only way I can explain the amount of traffic is that the Mother must drop them off, and the Father comes in the other car to wave them goodbye!

      John,
Great comment and very funny, but the real answer is more subtle. I used to drive to work. During the summer holidays I noticed that the traffic was much lighter and my journey to work was very much easier. I eventually worked out why.

Parents would drive their children to school in the rush hour and then return home. So each parent was making two car trips compared to the the single one-way trip each worker made.
During the school holidays therefore when the children stayed at home the traffic dropped by two-thirds!

As many have stated, it is child abuse.

It is part of the abusive Global Warming Alarmism Agenda that seeps into every nook and cranny of our culture. It has been planned.
As the political effectiveness of each label wanes, it is renamed: Climate Change, Extreme Weather, Climate Warming, Sea Level Rise, Melting Ice Caps, Polar Bears Dying, Acid Acidification and many more.

It affects everyone, not only children. Even the adults who are aware of the deceit are not unharmed: they are worn down, wary of discussing the truth and can lose good job opportunities including keeping the one they have. They also find that they are not believed as a matter of course.

It also corrupts the rigours of the Science and Engineering disciplines and that wastes wealth by creating misleading signals that the innocent use as a guide throughout their lives.

While many adults can avoid much of the gaslighting effects, children are forced to endure it as this pernicious authoritarian collectivist culture is a mandatory part of the school curriculum. They are rewarded with good marks if they regurgitate this political propaganda. If not, they are penalised.
It is ironic that this occurs during Science lessons.

When they find how they have been misled, it will be ‘interesting’ to see how they will react.

This abuse is happening in the West.

    That is also ‘interesting’.

I forgot to add that school children should be taught and examined on basic Science in Science classes at school, not Applied Science and certainly not on a political agenda. They need to accumulate, from the start, the fundamentals of Science, the understanding that underlies it, like Newton’s Laws, Ohm’s Law, photosynthesis and the Periodic Table. Discourse should be at their level. They do not need to be weighed down by the responsibility of solving problems that even the grown-ups have inadequate knowledge to solve. And giving them ready made solutions that have not yet been shown to be correct is not Science! Without the knowledge of the physical restraints present when working in the real world, let alone what is politically possible or where the money is coming from, they can only despair. When they probably haven’t earned a dime in their short lives, how do they know what a million pounds is? They are thinking in a vacuum, which is not good for them.
Climate Science is an Applied Science with only a small number of ‘experts’, and has been hijacked by those living in the political world where disagreement is a necessary component and easy money is the name of the game.

Science starts with understanding the accumulation of what has been agreed.
No wonder so many children are ill with worry. One wouldn’t visit London because of the risk of drowning: remember the rising sea levels.

I think we are all sick of Greta, as are most people.

My old man left school at 14 in 1936 to help put food on the table of his family. Many left earlier. And like many others he found himself in the armed forces fighting the Nazi’s a few years later.

This over privileged, ill educated little brat has nothing meaningful to say to anyone as she has seen and done nothing in her life independently.

Good piece. I’ve just shared it to my timeline with this intro:

We are very lucky that our children can go to schools in the first place from which to bunk off to get out on the streets, as this piece says, and that they are not still up chimneys and down mines.

However, there are many children in the world who are working in appalling and life-threatening conditions so that these kids can have their tablets and their mobile phones and screech for the world to have more EVs and wind turbines.

Is it OK for adults to be fostering fear in our children, and allowing them to frighten themselves?

For many years older people were revered for their wisdom, indeed a large part of the far East still does. Wisdom comes with age and experience. What wisdom has a 16 year old child who has never had to support herself or anyone else acquired?

Instead of accommodating a brat in the middle of an endless tantrum, President Trump actually did something which benefits mankind. He spoke eloquently at a session on Religious Freedom with VP Mike Pence. Under President Trump, the United States is actually doing things which make the world better and more free. These changes will bear fruit long after the tiresome little brat and her handlers are forgotten.

Just take a moment to compare her with the Trump children: Don, Jr., Erik, Ivanka, Tiffany and Barron. Notice any differences? Yesterday I watched an interview Fox News Reporter Steve Hilton did with Ivanka Trump on the efforts to bring prosperity to those in the “forgotten” places. Her eyes sparkled as she told what was happening to bring people from poverty to good jobs in urban and rural areas. The lady knows her stuff and is not just a name. They are partnering with businesses to do training for their needs so that people have a job while training. They are identifying and locating areas of need. Then they get companies to come into those areas. Companies are glad to have the areas pointed out to them. Also regulations are being cut and licenses are being “transported.” If you are duly licensed in one state for a skill, for example, the State of Arizona says they will accept it and you do not have to redo it with AZ.

There is a lot of common sense being employed in the Trump Administration. Ivanka is a businessman in her own right. And how did the media react to her efforts? She just got her hair cut in a bob and the media went on and on about how frightening it was for her to do that. It could scare people. These folks along with their child actors are insane.

My mother left school at 12 (not that she wanted to but there was a depression) and went off to working in Sydney away from home before she was 15 for higher wages. She told me of her first day there when she discovered her only pair of shoes had a hole in one sole. She stuffed a piece of cardboard under her foot for 2 weeks until she could afford to get the shoe repaired. After working for 3 months she could afford a new pair of shoes. And she thought she was better off than most.

How dare you, Greta, demand from a por child in Africa or any other poor part of the world to remain forever mired in their squalor while you live a life full of luxuries and comfort? For the poor of the world to escape their predicament, they need reliable and stable but most of all affordable power. If you don’t have that, you are stuck forever. Greta’s fundamentalism denies every poor child a decent future, it denies every poor person the most basic comforts that she consumes so voraciously. Its time people wake up to this egoistic movement. While you guys are having a party, people die in some poor country because they have no stable power to perform basic medical assistance. And it’s not only an African thing – her policies will hit the rich worlds poorest and even middle class the hardest. They cant afford Teslas.

My mam said that when she heard Greta saying ‘how dare you!’ her first thought was to backhand her across the face. The idea of a child lecturing her was too much, and she is baffled how a whole chamber of adults could actually put up with a petulant tantrum-throwing brat like that.
Yes she’s autistic but that means that her parents and other adults in her life should have been even more careful about what they put in her head, as she can’t relate to or judge other people and their motives. They are the people who have stolen her childhood.

It looked to me like faux rage. She seemed to have been well coached.
I was so annoyed by the ignorance on display that I wrote to the DT today. My guess is that my letter will somehow by disappeared by the snowstorm of letters generated by the Supreme Court’s judgement…

    FWIW:

    “Sir,

When the eminent climate scientist, Dr Richard Lindzen appeared before the Climate Change Committee in Parliament last year he gave a technical and expert presentation of how man-made climate change was not the bogey-man that activists think it is. Even when he was able to show that not one of the very many climate models had actually managed to predict current temperatures and were grossly inaccurate the CCC treated him with rather off-hand diffidence.

Likewise, when one of the most experienced and qualified laymen in climate science, Lord Nigel Lawson, was interviewed on BBC R4’s Today and talked about the (then) ‘pause’ in global warming, the BBC mandarins were so appalled that someone they called a ‘denier’ could be allowed to pollute their airwaves they made it a rule that no-one other than a qualified scientist should ever be allowed to speak on the subject of climate change: a rule more honoured in the breach when it comes to allowing spokesmen from – for example – Extinction Rebellion to spout their uninformed nonsense.

Yet, and yet, when a 16 year-old girl with hardly any life-experience (and in her short life has never experienced global warming, of any kind), let alone discernible scientific knowledge, gets up to speak to our MPs in the HoC or World Leaders at the UN our leaders and the BBC prostrate themselves at her feet and hang on every word she says. The shame – and it is our leaders’ shame – is that she does not know she is being used to support ulterior motives which have nothing to do with climate change. It is, for them, merely a means to an end.

    Yours, “

We should all try our best to limit pollution and harmful practices and, indeed, many of us in the First World (OK, sorry, racist terminology these days) are actively doing so.

I have read she is not mentally ill-Asperger’s is NOT a mental illness. Fine, then she is a SPOILED BRAT and as such can be ripped to shreds. She’s 16 and perfectly normal, we can shred her. It’s a life’s lesson. So, if we are going to say she’s not mentally ill, then she can criticized, vilified and attacked. If she’s a child and too delicate, then she need to SHUT UP and GROW up. This trying to have things both ways has to STOP. We should not accept it under any circumstances.

16-yr old children (particularly girls) think with their emotions rather than through rational thought processes. With their lack of experience they are ill-place to pontificate on any subject. For someone with a mental health issue (despite the fact that the DSM-5 removed Asperger’s from its listings) this pattern is likely to continue into adulthood.
As we are all aware of this why are so many supposedly intelligent adults endorsing Greta, who is a child ‘more sinned against than sinning’?

I couldn’t agree with you more. This has nothing to do with “saving our feverish planet” and everything to do with control and manipulation. This child is a product of Sweden, where they passed a Children’s Rights law many years ago, forbidding parents to discipline their children. That meant no more time out, no more getting grounded, no chores, never being told no. So they’ve become angry, manipulative, mean people who abuse each other and push the limits hoping someone will tell them enough. This young woman is being used and no one is allowed to say anything negative because they don’t want this sham getting investigated too closely
