Victoria Falls Drying Up–Latest BBC Fake News

November 27, 2019

By Paul Homewood

Today’s BBC fake climate news comes from Victoria Falls:

“The effects of severe drought and climate change are having an impact on one of the world’s great natural wonders, Victoria Falls”, claims the BBC.

Wow!! That must be bad!

Fortunately though, we don’t have to rely on the BBC, as Africa Geographic revealed the true story in 2015:

A number of photos have been circulating on the internet recently showing a very dry Victoria Falls. Some captions have even claimed that Vic Falls has dried up completely.

This is totally untrue. Vic Falls has not dried up, and a ‘dry’ falls is, in fact, part of a very normal, yearly cycle. There is always water (lots of it) on the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls, and late in the dry season (October/November), very little water reaches the Zambian side of the Falls.

African Travel and Tourism Association chairman Ross Kennedy says: “Traditionally, Victoria Falls is at its driest at this time of year, and often before the rainy season begins, the Zambian side does come close to drying up, with just a small amount of water flowing over in some places. This is simply because the falls are slightly lower on the Zimbabwean side.

However, due to exceptionally low rainfall in the catchment area during the last rainy season, the water level is at its lowest since 1996. The water levels will continue to drop as usual until the rains start in the catchment area north of Victoria Falls.”

Vic Falls on 17 October 2015.

So rest assured, Victoria Falls still remains one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and don’t let a few misleading images and captions lead you to believe differently.

In short, the falls are always dry at this time of year. Yes, this year has been much drier than normal, but the water level was even lower in 1996.

This is “weather”, not “climate change”.

What about long term rainfall trends there?

The World Bank climate portal gives rainfall data for Zambia from 1901 to 2016. The red trend line on the chart below shows absolutely no long term trend at all.

Rainfall in Zambia is strongly influenced by ENSO, with El Nino bringing lower rainfall, hence the low levels of rainfall in 2015/16. Most years since 2000 however have been well wetter than average.

Shoddy reporting of this nature is, sadly, all too common these days on the BBC.

Why not send monthly a list to someone senior on the production side at the BBC and the members of ‘The Board’ of these mistakes and falsehoods with broadcast dates?

Somehow I think it would find its way quickly from an intray to the shredder.
The BBC is not interested in the truth of scientific facts.

I sent a complaint to the BBC regarding the recent “Climategate” propaganda exercise complete with facts and observations of bias. This was fobbed off of course in their reply.
Perhaps we need a missive via this site to OFCOM with plenty of signatures. Lets see what happens then.
      Who is up for it?

I cannot see how signatures in any number can help. In the USA, the MEDIA DOES NOT CARE at all, in any amount; they are gods in their own eyes. They hate and despise their audience. Is it that different in England? Ratings don’t count here at all anymore, as billionaires fund this trying to destroy humanity.

It is different in England because you are forced – well, sort of – to pay for a TV licence to watch ANY broadcast TV and the money goes to the BBC which has a charter requiring it to be impartial. It has failed to be impartial for decades as it is populated by left-wing liberals. You can these days opt to use catch-up tv services and therefore not need a licence.

In my opinion, it is not shoddy reporting by the BBC – it is deliberate deception and is all part of their fake news and climate change propaganda

“by the BBC – it is deliberate deception”

      Precisely Phillip.

If, the great scam is unassailable ‘consensus he say’. It begs, why then does the UK media and specifically the beeb (sky just as bad note) feel the need to promote such scurrilous rubbish, and lie and lie again?

Exactly. In no way was this report ‘accidentally incorrect’. BBC dealing in climate propaganda yet again. Deserves another official complaint.

Splendid stuff Paul, I caught a quick glance of a trailer for the programme last night and immediately thought – is that kosher?

    Need I have asked?

It is nice to get the facts straight – however.

Some very crafty camera angles though, I wonder if, the attenboro propaganda ‘paint shop’ were involved?

    Confused crazy claims.

Amazing what 2mm p.a. of sea level rise can do!

Even in 100 years 8″ won’t be perceptible, at worst, very minor beach works might be required, simply not an issue.

Historically, long before global warming was a thing, Shoreham Beach was in danger.

“Intermittent storm and flood damage continued along the coast during the early 20th century, but after the various bodies responsible for coastal defence in Lancing and Shoreham Beach were replaced by one unified body in 1921, the danger was averted.”

“East Lancing Sea Defence Order, 1913; Shoreham and Lancing Sea Defence Order, 1921; S.C.M. ix. 296.”

    ( )

Shoreham Beach is a temporary/mobile portion of land/spit formed as the mouth of the Adur moved substantially east. If it weren’t for human intervention it would never have been stabilised and made possible to build all the houses there in the first place!

Historically the sea sometimes lapped low cliffs on the North side of the current A259 coast road.

The environment agency recently wasted millions on sea walls around Shoreham, cost justified by assuming sea level rises about 10 times reality.

Yes…. we were told as youngsters having to fight our way up the tree that if there was any grief from anyone trying to maliciously obstruct us, we should drop a Penny from the top and let it rattle all the way down ( ie send a letter to the Top of the Pile…) SO, send a monthly a list to someone , NO SEVERAL senior folk -Charlieboy, Boris& Co and for all that Leaders of the Opposition parties too AND then the bb-no-see etc Large Financial Investment Companies included ….. see what happens.

Doctored by Harrabin, I presume? (with apologies to Stanley)

Clearly the BBC want to damage Zimbabwe’s tourist industry. They do their best to fleece tourists who fly in from South Africa for a few hours who are not prepared to risk going to Harare.

Chart: Annual Rainfall in Zambia, 1901 to 2016.

Color me skeptical. NFW there is such data from 1901. Maybe not even til the 1960s.

There is no temperature data from 99% of Africa either but it doesn’t stop charts showing record heat there

      • November 28, 2019 10:19 pm

I roll my eyes every time I hear them claim record heat in an area they have no data for. Where I live in Florida, there are nearby data stations. Frequently there is a 5 degree spread in the concurrent temps they show. It’s laughable that the fake temp assigners could think they are even close. But, if they were, it would only be to an average that would be buried in a mountain of uncertainty.

They have their nerve, I’ll give them that.

Computer students don,t study Geography or History at universities and colleges. The two sets of departments are completely separate. The same goes for Legal and Political studies though they may study Social Sciences. So we have graduates who know nothing in political positions, national or local, and in also in charge of communications. They think they can look up any subject on Wikipedia and get a comprehensive understanding.
