‘Dubious’ Record-High Temp Allowed To Stand Despite Known Problems

Leading German daily Bild here reports on the controversy, which still continues to swirl, over Germany’s all-time record high temperature recorded last year in North Germany near the Dutch border.

Last year on July 25th, the Lingen thermometer reached a whopping 42.6°C, far eclipsing the old German all-time record of 40.3°C. But that recording quickly came under fire by independent weather experts who say the station data were  corrupted by siting issues. The Lingen station is located in a depression in the earth, near a parking lot, and shielded by trees from the wind, thus creating the ideal conditions for trapping heat.

Comparison to nearby stations shows huge anomaly

Last year NTZ reported on the controversial record here noting that surrounding stations did not even come close to record reading in Lingen. What follows is a comparison of the Lingen’s readings to those of 6 nearby stations over the five day period, July 23 – July 27:

On every single day, Lingen handily beat its neighbors by at times huge, red-flag-raising margins.

Today, a year later – as reported by Bild – meteorologists continue to slam the Lingen record.

Almost 4°C too hot?

Bild writes that the Lingen station today “keeps on recording record-breaking temperatures:

On May 20th, the station had 23.6 degrees. In the neighborhood it was below 20 degrees.

On May 10, 27.7 degrees were measured in Lingen, in the neighborhood it was barely over 24 degrees.”

“Massive doubts”…”definitely not the warmest place”

Bild also notes that German meteorologist Dominik Jung (wetternet.de) “massively doubts the results of the station in Lingen” and that “it is dubious that the DWD allows such a weather station at all.”

Jung adds: “The station should be moved.”

Bild also cites meteorologist Dr. Karsten Brandt of donnerwetter.de: “The station in Lingen has the problem that it is located in a depression, which heats up the temperatures. This is definitely not the warmest place in Germany.”

So is Germany’s DWD National Weather Service, which operates the station, ready to dump Lingen’s overheated data? Bild reports that the DWD plans to stick to the Lingen readings, deeming them to be of good scientific quality.

Shades of “record” temperatures claimed by the Met Office  here, such as the one at Cambridge last year.

They will dump them, but not yet. They are in the process of moving the station but there are bureaucratic problems delaying that. After they have moved it, the ‘records’ from the old station will become a problem, because they can’t be broken – no headlines! So in few years time they will decide they made a mistake and quietly de-list them.

The WMO clearly still has much work to do – quietly reviewing and eradicating very old records!

“Last year on July 25th, the Lingen thermometer reached a whopping 42.6°C, far eclipsing the old German all-time record of 40.3°C”

Why is this an AGW climate change issue? AGW is a theory about long term temperature trends in mean global temperature and not about temperature events. That there was an extreme temperature event in a certain corner of the globe is irrelevant in this context. It may interest thermometer msnufacturers and takers and keepers of temperature data but it is not an AGW issue.

You know by now how the propaganda machine operates?

Weather events that support the climate change narrative are signs of climate change, often with the caveat that no single event blah blah – but that the dice has been loaded, 100 times more likely etc.

Whereas weather events that contradict the climate change narrative, if there are in fact any eventualities that cannot now be twisted to this not falsifiable pan-theory, are just random weather, and you are an ignorant climate denier for not knowing that!

The alarmists/MSM make it a climate change issue, so push back is required.

Because my dear fellow dreamscape traveller, science has nothing to do with this. This is about sensation. That is all that underpins the climate circus and its fiction factory. It is about creating impressions and influencing people who do not understand what is relevant or important. This is why we now have hysterical outpourings from the PC BBC and their mates at the equally “impartial” Gruaniad when there is a weather event which they then conflate with climate. However notice it is only claimed as climate if it is hot and then wet/dry or windy. Cold is caused by weather. The people preaching this garbage do not care about science or accuracy because the legions of useful idiots out there showing that they can be so easily taken in.

Human behaviour, common sense, irrationality… is summed up in the phenomenon that when the chance of winning the lottery decreases from very unlikely, to extremely unlikely squared, more people waste more money because the simple fact they do understand is true; it could be them. Ignoring what “extremely unlikely squared” really means.

I’m a long time believer in that many of the world’s problems are because a ‘million’ rhymes with a ‘billion’ even through they’re not remotely similar.

I suppose, people are clever enough to know what they are want to believe , and stupid enough to believe what they want to believe is true. I’ve on ToL many times; facts are boring.

I commented similar recently, at least 3 of the UK monthly records are sufficiently suspect to warrant an annotation of caution or complete retraction, actually 4 thinking about it.

    Kew Gardens – February.
    Cambridge Botanic Gardens – July
    Gravesend – October
    Faversham – August

The only one they retracted was the one in Scotland caused by the ice cream van parked next to the sensor. I guess that was too brazen even for the Met O.

I found a picture of what was purported to be the Faversham or Gravesend site. Sorry I could not find the link. Will keep looking. The Stevensons Screen is place right next to a concrete roadway. It is clear to anyone who believes in gathering quality data that this site is problematic with wafts of hot air from the concrete directed at the Stevenson’s Screen.

Paul, I asked about the Cambridge temperature last year if you remember – the Botanic Gardens recorded 38.7 C, whereas the University Of Cambridge (https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/dtg/weather/period-graph.cgi?2019-07) recorded only, I think it was 37.1 – I can’t find the read out now, but I’m pretty sure it was a full 1.6 degrees below the Botanic Gardens for the same day’s maximum.

The problem with older record temperatures is explaining why they were so hot (or cold) if AGW is the proximate cause of the new record. Much easier to systematically lower the older ones…which is what NOAA has been doing to the older US Weather Bureau numbers.

Here is a temperature that is going down steadily – and it is one that signifies something!

This reminds me of the debacle in the city where I live (Newcastle upon Tyne) where a newly installed air pollution sensor showed that Newcastle was the most polluted city in the UK. A few weeks later it was one of the least polluted, Why? Because the sensor was removed from the main enclosed bus where the buses wait until departure time with engines running and placed somewhere more sensible!

Claiming a record high gives you creds in the climate community. Not being an actual record might even enhance your standing.
