A wave of new coal power plants are under construction or in development after the country lifted curbs on new builds, according to a study published Tuesday by Greenpeace.

About 46 gigawatts worth of new plants were under construction as of May, the study said. Another 48 gigawatts were under various stages of development, Greenpeace estimated.

About 29.9 gigawatts of new coal power capacity was added last year, making a total of about 1,040 gigawatts, according to China Electricity Council data.

China remains coal’s stronghold even as consumption of the dirtiest fossil fuel wanes elsewhere in the world. The nation mines and burns about half the world’s coal and views it as an important source of cheap power and mass employment.

A spate of coal plant constructions in the early part of the decade led to overcapacity, and by 2016 the National Energy Administration ordered 28 of the country’s 33 regional governments to suspend or delay new plants. Those restrictions have been lifted in recent years, with only six regions expected to have excessive capacity by 2023.

    “China remains coal’s stronghold”

why aren’t greenpi88 sending the doom goblin over there to sort it out?

Probably because they know that AGW is a fiction to impoverish the West! This is as a direct consequence that modern education, thanks to the Left is so dire, that people believe that an increase in ratio from three molecules of atmospheric CO2 to four in every 10,000 is going to cause the climate to change!

Andrew, it’s not so much that ‘they’ know, it’s that their useful idiots here know it. There are many. many people in this country who are willing to sell out our culture and history so that the Chinese Communist Party can take over – in the same way they have taken over in Africa (but don’t expect BLM ‘activists’ to protest China’s colonialism of the black continent).
We really, really are at a tipping point, and it’s nothing to do with climate (which was another string to their bow).

      • June 16, 2020 10:22 pm

It is worse than that Andrew. It is easy to check this online. IF the electromagnetic signature of CO2 is compared to that of Water Vapour (100 times more common in the atmosphere) it can be seen that CO2 only has a very small expression and then in the Ultra Low end of the Infra Red part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Compare that to Water Vapour and it can be seen that whatever signature CO2 has is swamped by that of Water Vapour. The physics is confirmed by geological history which shows NO correlation whatsoever either positive or negative between atmospheric CO2 concentration and atmospheric temperature. Conclusion being that IF there IS a greenhouse effect ( sorry guys just saying it often does not make it real), then the major contributor to that unproven effect HAS TO BE WATERVAPOUR. Both the late lamented Freeman Dyson and thankfully still with us William Happer, two real physicists of great repute both saw a potential greenhouse effect as a side show and in all probability being in the 5% ballpark as a contributing factor to warming. However we all do know the difference between a winters night with cloud and another with no cloud. No Greta I know you claim to be able to see CO2 but those clouds keeping the heat in are water vapour and not CO2. If you did not skip school you may have learned that FACT and would then have had knowledge to fend off those people who have manipulated you for profit.

NTZ reports Germany is converting coal to bio-mass, but it’s not just Germany.

“Approximately 2,700km2 of forest would need to be cut down every year to feed this demand – equivalent to most of the forest in the Netherlands or half of the Black Forest in Germany.”

Maybe they’ll ship American trees across the Atlantic like Drax does.

Nothing says ‘environmental awareness’ like cutting down someone else’s forest, shipping it thousands of kilometres using fuel oil, then burning it very inefficiently to make electricity.

Yes, they are intending to burn mostly imported wood, the forests mentioned were just a visualization – like Drax currently requiring an area almost as big as Wales given over to Pine plantation to be fed.

They have already destroyed a great deal of trees in Scotland and the rest of Europe esp. Germany to make space for windmills/solar.

Oh dear, sorry but I cannot believe that, the Germans by a long way aren’t as green bonkers as the UK.

Meanwhile listen to the sound of crickets from the Left in the West. Don’t expect Greta to be rushing to Beijing to say “how dare you!”

    Harry Passfield says “tipping point.”

My daughter-in-law is a maths teacher, who has had to deal with returning children at secondary level. She says there is something very wrong with all of them. The enforced isolation, and the brutal ignoring of their needs, has been the last straw for fragile young minds, whose only resource, after ten years of so-called education, is a handful of ridiculous and emotionally crude ‘ruling myths.’

    They are shell-shocked.

BBC pension scheme must need a boost, or perhaps Justin just enjoys blowing smoke up another bloke’s backside.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-53067009

They never mention how incompatible with saving the planet space exploration/tourism is, that the fast expensive TESLA’s are far worse for the planet than equivalent ICE cars, or that Musk could never have done any of this without robbing taxpayers all over the world – $billions upon $billions in direct and indirect subsides for his electric cars/manufacturing facilities. And he has still failed to deliver a cheap and environmentally friendly electric car for the masses which would tempt them away from ICE cars with matching practicality.

More game-changing battery developments? These are 10 a penny in research journals; they find some interesting lab effect, big up the potential to get investment money, the researchers get to keep their jobs for another year, but the discovery rarely works in the real world/scales up. The laws of physics/energy density cannot be defeated.

Meanwhile China is given credit for massive wind and solar energy expansion as proof of their AGW commitment. Nothing more than “make work” for the communist state. Information being leaked accuses them of not even using those energy producing methods for all the obvious and proven reasons …. but installations continue for nothing more than propaganda. They can point to satellite pictures as proof of their efforts yet their fossil fuel use continues to rise.

We hardly, if ever, heard a peep from the BBC about Antarctic sea ice all the 4 decades it was creeping up in extent. But then…….

Have you noticed how ‘bad’ news (the sudden Antarctic sea ice decline in 2016/17) gets repeated long after it’s over – BBC junior brainwashing in action.

“….scientists are scratching their heads as to whether it has happened naturally or because of a long-term global warming problem.”

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/48844458

Good news never gets a look in – what are the chances of the BBC reporting the dramatic recovery and that it must have been natural?

“Sea ice loss – especially in the Arctic but less so in the Antarctic – is one of the clearest signals of global warming, according to the National Climate Assessment.”

Yer, that sounds exactly like what you would expect in a ‘heating world’. Not at all like only picking the evidence that suits your bias, and dismissing anything contradictory.

Nope, the BBC will just jump back to the highly speculative and uncertain ice sheet mass loss/gain issue, reporting it as certain massive melting.

“…the chances of the BBC reporting the dramatic recovery…”

About the same as the chances of their reporting that the excess snow of last winter in the Northern Hemisphere is still in situ – a million million tons of it. That is how Ice Ages start.
Not that I think one is starting. But give me a state-endorsed platform for a decade, call any critics ‘the lunatic fringe,’ and I think I could persuade a majority!

This is similar (some same pictures) to ‘Britain goes coal free’ – lazy Justin!

Amazing how he spins everything to reverse reality, almost like the BBC and Guardian are working from the same propaganda source.

From your first link: “Britain’s electricity grid will not have burnt any coal for 60 days – as of midnight on Wednesday 10 June. That is by far the longest period since the Industrial Revolution began more than 200 years ago. When I spoke to the National Grid, they said they weren’t expecting a coal generator to be turned back on anytime soon.”

Well, that didn’t last long! I see on Gridwatch that coal was providing some UK electricity yesterday up until 5pm and it’s up and running again this am. Extremely small amounts in the overall scheme of things (max yesterday 0.46GW), but that surely messes up further virtue signalling claims about zero coal burning for a while.

It’s just to make a ‘political statement’. They could have easily run the grid without coal for extended periods far greater in the past. And they could have chosen to disconnect all the wind and solar and still supplied demand – would that prove that coal is essential?

I do hope these new Chinese coal plants are as clean as possible.
according to PhD nuclear engineer Robert Zubrin, in his book Merchants Of Despair, we’d need a Chernobyl every day to match the toll on humanity currently inflicted (2013) by coal.

Interestingly, CO2 is now seen as a net coolant effect, via convection.
