Torvill & Dean Skating On Thin Ice

Torvill & Dean take the Climategeld!

In an hour long ITV documentary, Torvill & Dean get whisked off to Alaska to fulfil their long held dream of skating on a lake in the mountains.
Naturally, of course, it is all presented as their last chance before global warming makes it impossible.
Having jetted into Anchorage, they are advised to travel a thousand miles north to Fairbanks, if they want to find any ice. This is all very strange, because the programme starts with them skating on Lake Bonnie (above), which is only just inland from Anchorage!
Evidently, the scenery is not spectacular enough for them there, and stopping there would not fill up an hour of programming anyway.
We then see them taking a 12 hour rail journey to Fairbanks, followed by a helicopter flight to their chosen lake, which has to be cleared of heavy snow. (Yes, I know, you could not make it up!)
There is of course the usual whingeing about melting glaciers, but perhaps somebody ought to tell them that Alaskan glaciers began receding in the 18thC:
https://web.archive.org/web/20160214051639/http://soundwaves.usgs.gov/2001/07/fieldwork2.html
Or that, as the glaciers melt, geologists are finding the remains of forests dating back to the Middle Ages and Roman times:
In short, Alaska is simply returning to its normal climate prior to the Little Ice Age.
One of course might question how a flight to Alaska, a 12 hour rail journey and a helicopter ride, all for the whole production team, not just the two skaters, could possibly help fight climate change!
But here’s a much more powerful take away message. Throughout the programme, we meet ordinary Alaskan folk going about their everyday lives, global warming or not. Just how the hell could any of them survive in Alaska without fossil fuels?
Solar panels? Not in winter. Wind turbines, which would freeze up for months on end?
But, heh, skating on a lake is much more important than the lives of 730,000 people!

Your comments are exactly as I felt watching the programme. How gullible are celebrities to the utter tripe spoken by commentators. I suppose you cannot blame them for an opportunity to earn but at least they should appraise themselves of the facts.
Interesting read across to covid/lockdown sceptics. They finally realise that they are in minority, the majority aren’t interested in facts or loss of liberty, they are influenced by safety, security and following the communal morals which are based on emotions, easily influenced by govt/media psyops. The same is true of climate change. The same controlling group who have felt threatened by the last 4 years of brexit/Trump etc are in hyperdrive, its their payback time.
The part that gave me the biggest laugh was the glacier park ranger who was taking them across a glacier and complaining that it was much smaller now. After all, he said, he’d been there ten years and knew that global warming was making a difference: “it’s all the carbon” he said!! A Nobel awaits that man!
I wonder how much they paid him, and how long it took him to memorize that script.
The ‘carbon’ can be captured for $400 a ton, this report says, but “In recent years, we’ve emitted 40 gigatons”.
https://www.space.com/can-carbon-removal-slow-climate-change.html
Covid-ravaged national budgets have no chance of doing much, if any, of that. Next fantasy!
Fighting climate change just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

“I used to be a naturalist before I became a UN salesman to push this climate change thing.”
Love it! Excellent piece.
Thank you sir
Starting at one of the glacial outflows, I went to the Alaskan Harding Icefield in 2019 – in mid-summer but with a major icefield’s microclimate, it was seriously cold. The Harding is on the Kenai Peninsula, well south of Anchorage. Watching this, I must therefore have been seeing and feeling an illusion.
Fairbanks – as a town close to the Arctic Circle and with direct climatic comparisons to the oft-quoted Verkhoyansk in Russia – is an interesting case in point for Arctic/sub-Arctic continental (ie well away from any maritime influences) regions. It achieves temperatures in excess of 30C each and every summer. In winter, however, temperatures regularly dip below -30C, reaching below -40C on occasion. So, that’s a 6-monthly temperature swing of over 70C twice every year. Animal and plant life survives and just compare that to the trivial 1C – 1.5C warming that the Earth’s surface has supposedly had in 150 years. I’m sure most Alaskans would welcome a bit of warming for most of the year!
It’s little more than 300 miles north of Anchorage, by the way, although roads and “railroads” will be longer due to the terrain. Not 1,000 miles though.
PS Just looked up the Spencer Glacier – which they ended-up on having left Fairbanks. In fact it’s SOUTH-EAST of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula, again where there wasn’t supposed to be any ice at all.
The whole programme was such a fake. Poor national treasures Torvill and Dean – hoodwinked.
Why is anyone surprised at celebrities virtue signalling in the direction of the latest fashionable cause – particularly two washed up has beens like Torville and Dean.
Something else on thin ice us the AGW theory.
‘IS’ !
Celebrities, ice-skaters and others, tend to find intelligence a contraindication in their line of ‘work’
Super-lovie and EMMA winner Emma Thompson is a good example. She is at her best when somebody tells her what to say, how to say it and where to say it.
Science unless there is some revolutionary new discovery pushing the boundaries in a single leap is quite conservative and rigidly constrained, progressing ever so slowly by those who today stand on the shoulders of giants.
I have spent my working life considering everything I do with Critical Thinking and constant checking to be as sure as possible to conform to the Scientific Method. There are constant checks and challenges and forensic peer reviews which search out and attack every weakness in the work which is proposed and rightly so.
On merit only has science, the pursuit of truth progressed.
It has therefore come as a complete shock to witness the incessant withering barrage of unsupported and so often cretinous claims and assertions we are presented with on a daily basis not by credible scientists who are open of course to challenge but instead by celebrities, unelected heads of public bodies and charities, media presenters and of course troubled teenagers from Sweden all of whom are promoted as the “unquestionable voice of authority and reason”.
Claims and assertions are presented as fact, scientific facts because some nameless “expert” at best says so. Claims go unchallenged as if they came down from Mount Sanai carved in stone and never are alternative views requested or presented.
Most offensive of all is that the baseless assertions are given authority and sprinkled with holy climate water at every opportunity with quasi religious nods of the head to the IPCC or some unqualified head of a charity or the feelings of a celebrity with a knowing look and some fatuous reference to the insulting notion of “scientific consensus” or the even more absurd “settled science”.
Unchecked as it is, this this is dementing and a sure road to madness.
What kind of 21st Century society which only exists because of the Enlightenment can reach such a point of wilful and collective asininity where it is required that its leaders present themselves to be browbeaten by a strange and troubled teenager from Sweden promoted as the unassailable voice of truth and reason supported by the equally absurd authority of “scientific consensus and settled science”?
The lovely Greta has given a media interview for her 18th birthday:
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jan/03/greta-thunberg-at-18-im-not-telling-anyone-what-to-do
She has a broken front light on her bike and as we know she is a poor schoolgirl with poor parents. I thought someone should set up a Go Fund Me to get her back on the road with her bike. She might then make it to Glasgow in November, where she will be sorely needed by the media.

Scientific experts, as well as Greta and the Pope say you are wrong. Emma is coming to sort you out. (in her pink boat)
It was started by scientists themselves collaborating with de-growther fascists (who were pretending to be progressives, defenders of wild animals and planet savers) and since the money and totalitarian power lie with the de-growthers, more and more scientistists have followed.
This type of programme are so boring when the agenda is propaganda. Luckily we have recently gained access to Netflix so binge watching The Crown has given us a break from indoctrination. When one returns to watch the BBC/ITV it is obvious why ratings are declining.
“The Crown” – A Jewish comedian’s perspective…
The Crown is I gather indoctrination of a different kind. It’s just as much fiction, even if it’s more fun.
As I mentioned before in respect of this program, I’m afraid ITV is embarking on an aggressive climate change propaganda spree.
The only bit I saw was them lighting methane from an iced over lake. Of course this looks dramatic but is entirely natural for normal lakes or thermokarst (it’s a similar to the dishonest gaslands/fracking water tap lighting stunt).
This stunt was in order to promote the old failed and long since disproved Arctic methane monster/bomb causing runaway warming. Obviously the Arctic has been much warmer in the last few thousand years (the Holocene optimum is not controversial) and the thawing permafrost then did not cause the earth to fry!
Holocene Glaciers likely did not exist in Alaska until 5000 years ago and they became much larger during the LIA. They are now melting from that high point
Using a “green screen” they could skate anywhere in the world using stock footage, and saved the Beebs tax payer Pounds. I’m sure the whole thing was put together by some Wokie Producer trying to escape a boring and fruitless existence.
Glaciers in Alaska are less than 5000 years old as shown on the Parks own notice boards
https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2019/09/fact-check-no-the-glaciers-are-not-growing-in-glacier-national-park/
Was it last year that the BBC promoted the absurd notion of a wake for a glacier in Iceland with the ex primate of Ireland jetting in for the circus. Like with all the climate hysteria there are no checks and balances so if you let them talk they will shoot themselves in the foot eventually. They even held a mock funeral procession up to the glacier. The BBC totally overcome with the emotion of the event let it slip that the glacier was 700 years old……They really do not think anymore
A thought I had was that after the glacier melted, they would find under it a plaque ,put there by an ancient people to commemorate the last time that area was ice free.
If you’d stayed until the end, you’d have seen them preparing the ice using some flame-powered device, no doubt carried thousands of miles.
The hypocrisy is staggering.
There seems to be a sort of climategate frenzy going on at the moment. It can’t last at this intense level. When nothing continues to happen, people will get bored.
The advocates of AGW do not care about their dishonesty, they are saving the planet, so a few whoppers are okay. The trouble is that it is all part of the brainwashing of the populace and, unbelievably, there is no counter to this anywhere other than web-sites.
Jack, you’re right, they don’t care about dishonesty. If not CC then the US election is up for grabs – sorry, graft. These people are in hock to the Chinese and will do anything to gain their goal.
NOTE: the one word that is gaining more traction lately is ‘TOGETHER’. It is, IMHO, a UN trigger to get people to think that only a NWO can save them. Listen to the govmnt ads…
Well the scenery was pretty good……..
