A third of top UK firms emit enough CO2 to push up global warming by 2.7C–Latest Guardian Lies

Even by Guardian standards, this has to be one of the most mendacious, not to mention absurd, articles yet:

Three out of 10 of the UK’s biggest public companies emit carbon dioxide at a rate that would contribute significantly to the climate crisis, according to analysis that shows the scale of the challenge for corporate Britain to cut emissions to zero.

Thirty-one members of the FTSE 100, the index of Britain’s largest listed companies, are emitting carbon dioxide at a rate consistent with global temperature increases of 2.7C or more by 2050, according to analysis by Arabesque, a company that provides climate data to investors.

Highlighting the mounting risks to the planet, the rise would be above the target set under the 2015 Paris climate accords to limit global heating to below 2C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5C. A temperature rise of 2.7C is thought to be likely to lead to severe damage to the environment and to human life.

Oil companies including BP and Royal Dutch Shell are among those that produce carbon dioxide emissions consistent with temperature rises of more than 2.7C, even without taking into account the emissions related to the fossil fuels they dig up and sell, known as scope 3 emissions.

The mining sector also performed poorly, with Anglo American, Antofagasta, BHP, Evraz, Fresnillo and Polymetal all among the companies scored at above 2.7C.

Let’s leave aside the nonsense that oil companies “emit carbon dioxide”, rather than the drivers and homeowners who actually burn the stuff, and get straight to the nitty gritty.

The key lies in this phrase:

are emitting carbon dioxide at a rate consistent with global temperature increases of 2.7C

Most people (well at least Guardian readers!) reading this would naively assume that these wicked companies are emitting enough carbon dioxide between them to boil the planet. In fact what the Arabesque analysis does is to look at what plans companies have to reduce emissions, and then prorata this to what the rest of the world is doing.

So, for example, if a company has no plans to cut emissions, and every other country in the world carried on in the same way, temperature would rise by 2.7C or more.

In reality of course, far from cutting emissions, the rest of the world is planning to carry on increasing them. something confirmed in their Paris pledges:

Back here in the UK, industrial emissions are just 88 Mt, about 0.2% of the global total. Clearly whatever UK companies do will have no effect whatsoever on global temperatures, and it is fraudulent for the Guardian to claim otherwise.

But naturally the Guardian could not resist the temptation to attack capitalism once again.

I would be “surprised” if the Guardian is NOT receiving money to promote this crapola. As with everything else the Climate Cabal is getting more and more clever with the language of deception. Why do they need to do this “if” the science is “settled”?

  2. March 1, 2021 12:15 pm

It is an open secret that the Guardian is short of funds. Who is paying them to field this kind of bullcrap`?

    • March 1, 2021 12:19 pm

      Insightful as usual.

Its just an out and out lie. The “emissions” rom Shell and BP will be completely inline with whatever emissions are made BECAUSE THEY ARE THE SAME THING. If people keep driving ICE cars then Shell and BP will keep “emitting”. If we keep burning gas the same. This analysis claims that somehow the two are not connected in what I suspect I’d a fraud aimed at getting gullible people to disinvest.

No it isn’t. if you take a squint at their online front page there are no articles open for comment. They are on the brink of going bust (any normally funded company would have gone years ago) and they are cutting back so far they only have moderators to police their shit on a part time basis. That is largely why articles like this crap are getting into print. It is being paid for and they cannot refuse the money despite how bad the article is.

So 69% of the FTSE 100 are emitting carbon dioxide at a lower rate than that ‘consistent with global temperature increases of 2.7C or more by 2050’? Time for celebration of their massive success surely?

The list of naughty companies is weird too, Admiral Insurance? Morrissons? Rentokil? Even National Grid – surely they just connect stuff up. So this is more about flashing green credentials than any threat to the planet IMHO.

Amusingly Morrissons are up at the moment on the FTSE100, Sainsburys (sponsors of COP26) are down.

Funnily enough, no mention of the Drax Group’s Co2 emissions in to the U.K. atmosphere just about dwarfing every other major company in the FTSE 100. Is that because their Co2 emissions are even more invisible than everybody else’s?

What is needed to stop this dangerous nonsense is to treat this “climate emergency” in the same way as the current pandemic emergency. The PM needs to hold regular, televised press conferences with him backed up by bona fide climate scientists a la Patrick Vallance his chief scientific adviser (although I doubt he knows anything about climate science) In order to explain why they think it is really an emergency and to explain clearly what the government is going to do about it, in terms of timescales and costs. He and his team of advisers must agree to be questioned live on air about evidence and progress etc as per the pandemic. I doubt the PM will get any support at all from any scientist live on air in case they are held to account.
Really, all we are told about global warming/climate change comes from non climate scientists like Al Gore, David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg, the BBC, the Guardian, John Gummer et al. I have never seen any climate scientist explain on TV what “climate emergency” really means and what the actual evidence is; as opposed to pictures of icebergs and glaziers calving and trees burning etc.

The reason is they switch between alarmist media who push the screaming headlines (this article being a textbook example) and climate scientists who use much more measured tones to describe the tiny amounts of actual observed warming.

The observed data provides exactly zero evidence to support any sort of ’emergency’, so actual scientists don’t usually go there. Their language is much more moderate – ‘consistent with’ and so on.

Politicians, activists and media figures are under no such constraint, so scream from the rooftops, without ever being held to account.

      It’s been undeservedly successful.

As for your initial, press conference idea…Hell would freeze over before they allow any cross examination of their fairy stories.

Jackington, I totally agree with your comment and it makes it all the more sad that we no longer have the late, great Professor David Mackay to clearly explain the reality of the situation.
On a lighter note, I do love the odd typo (I am as guilty of those as the next person) and the thought of “glaziers calving” did give me quite a laugh as one of my closest friends runs a glazing company!

Imagine how CO2 emissions from the U.K. are able to raise global temperatures by a whopping 2.7C (5F), when CO2’s weak puny 15 micron photons have a Planck radiation temperature of -80C and can’t melt an ice cube. Never mind the record cold spells. The pesky CO2 likes to hide during the winter in a big hole in the ground. In summer it comes back out and radiates deathly -80C photons to the ground, causing record heat waves and droughts along with wildfires and hurricanes. 🙂

CO2 global warming is and always has been a fake physics hoax by the global Marxists at the U.N. IPCC that relies on mass ignorance of thermal/radiative physics. Too bad for them, you can still take my free online course and get smart and fight back:

Surprise, they’re doing it for money and power. The IPCC octopus of kept scientists, academics, journalists, and politicians have long hijacked science to make useful idiots who will pony up hundreds of trillions for massive redistribution of wealth for social-racial justice under the label Great Reset, thinking they’re rescuing the world from CO2-driven global warming, when actually they’re impoverishing themselves and their children and handing all their freedoms to global Marxism, which will never give it back. After 150 trillion or so is wasted and the predicted warming doesn’t happen, will you feel like you got your money’s worth, or realize you’ve been had? If you don’t learn physics they can’t lose.

Knowledge is power. Follow my space on Quora and arm your mind to fight the evil IPCC:

Not just in terms of of time and costs. But explain also what practical, realistic and meaningful actions would make a difference to the climate. Then the time frame and costs might mean something.

Despite the short cold spell, February ended up quite a lot warmer than average in the mean Central England Temperature series, ranked about 100th warmest out of ~360 years.

Anyone else notice that the BBC weatherman has repeatedly referred to the 18.4C reached, as ‘extreme heat’. It may be exceptionally mild for Feb. but certainly no record, but since when has 18C been HOT!

It’s probably one of those month people will misremember as exceptionally cold and snowy, but it wasn’t.

Amazing that this kind of nonsense is still being published when there is considerable evidence that the planet is cooling not warming, that the 0.041% of the atmosphere that is CO2 has no effect at all on climate, and that analyses such as this recent one of NASA’s own upwelling and downwelling radiation data show that UN/IPCC’s theory of global warming is incorrect.

You guys in England get a much better bang for your buck. Obama’s Clean Power Plan, which will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $6.7 Trillion (yes, with a T) will save, according to the EPA’s own calculations, between 1.5 one-thousands (.000015) and 6 one-thousands (.00006) of one degree in global warming, by the year 2100. Can we hire some of the Guardian geniuses to teach us how to get more for our money?

Perhaps the Grauniad is being kept afloat by Putin and The CHICOMS. Putin to stop fracking so he will be able to supply the hydrocarbons that we shall continue to need well past 2050 and the CHICOMS because they are enjoying watching GB bankrupt itself by making its goods uncompetitive in world markets while they (and many others) are building hundreds of coal fired power stations to provide affordable energy.
The biggest risk faced by Putin and The King CHICOM is to die laughing.
