    What chance have they got? Perhaps to become eco hysteria educators, no facts to learn and memorise and money is probably quite good too.

      Rather than being a Senator, the good Mr. Johnson is a member of the US Congress from Georgia. You saved me the trouble of looking him up.

      Not to be outdone, Congress member Sheila Jackson Lee, representing the Houston area of Texas asked scientists at the Houston Space Center if they could send the Mars Rover to see of the American planted by Neil Armstrong on the moon was still there.

      We have definitely overcome survival of the fittest.

        Channelling my daughter here: OMG!! She’s 70 yo (nothing really wrong there) but is in her 14th (!!) Term and seems to have done nothing of merit. She’s ex NY serving in Tx. That’s so weird. There is nothing in her profile to say she was big on education – there’s a reason. Term limits were made for people like her.

        I’ve just got an e-mail so cannot vouch for accuracies but….
        A DC ‘airport ticket agent’ offers some examples of why the US is in so much trouble! I love this as the ticket agent actually names names

        1. I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman (Carol Shea-Porter) ask for an aisle seat so that her hair wouldn’t get messed up by being near the window. (On an airplane!)

        3. A senior Vermont Congressman (Bernie Sanders) called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that’s not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state.
        He replied, ‘Don’t lie to me!, I looked on the map, and Florida is a very THIN state!!”

        4. I got a call from a lawmaker’s wife (Landra Reid) who asked, ”Is it possible to see England from Canada ?”

        I said, ”No.” She said, ”But they look so close on the map”

        11. Mary Landrieu, La. Senator, called and had a question about the documents she needed in order to fly to China . After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded her that she needed a visa. “Oh, no I don’t. I’ve been to China many times and never had to have one of those”

        I double checked and sure enough, her stay required a visa. When I told her this she said, ”Look, I’ve been to China four times and every time they have accepted my American Express!”

      I’m sure you’ll find out it was an old teacher training college, miraculously renamed as an University thanks to Blair’s desire to keep the youth unemployment figures low with his “All Shall Have Degrees” strategy. Whilst neglecting to mention that the degrees would be worthless and would put them deep in debt!

    Surely that should be either “mitigate the effects of global warming” or “reduce / slow global warming” ?

    And anyway, isn’t “global warming” very passe the days? I believe “climate change” is the term du jour.

    “… how to successfully teach…” but not to teach them why splitting an infinitive is poor grammar.

    As an aside can anyone explain what is meant by “a >50%PP school ” (“pretty poor”, maybe? – keep it clean ! )

      It used to be Global Warming which, when it wasn’t happening as promised, changed to Climate Change. This became, after it became apparent that it wasn’t going to happen fast enough to suit the Alarmists, Extreme Weather. As far as I can see, Extreme Weather can be used to describe any weather, like the cold snap we had a couple of weeks back, that deviates from the average; average temperatures, average rainfall, average anything really. It’s a great expression from the Alarmist’s point of view as it infers danger (extreme) and can be tagged on to practically any weather event of note. You’ve got to hand it to them. What we need are counter-terms.

      PP (Pupil Premium) is additional funding schools receive for educating disadvantaged pupils.

      Online searches indicate the grants are not insubstantial. For example for 2020/21 Hallfield Primary School, London W2 6JJ has 343 pupils, and the “Number of pupils eligible for PPG:130 (tbc); Total Pupil Premium Grant: £174,850 (tbc)”

      It seems there’s a school in Manchester that could perhaps better invest part of its PP grant in its combined science Teacher Training.

        There’s no such thing as correct grammar. How could there be? What some claim is correct is simply the invention of the18th century when the aspiring merchant class wanted to learn what was “proper” and various people obliged by making up rules for them to follow. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever an infinitive cannot be split. Where would such a “rule” come from?

        Since she goes on to write, “Or are all islands actually connected to the seabed at some point…?” I think we can safely assume that she is thinking about floating in water, not floating in the mantle.

        I doubt she would have the background knowledge to understand the general concept of isostasy under gravitation.

        Basaltic volcanic islands do in fact sink back into the magma – albeit very slowly – as Darwin noted in his theory of atoll formation. The (basaltic) oceanic lithosphere is relatively thin and unable to carry the weight of (basaltic) volcanic islands.
        Continents are different – they really do float on the magma – as they are granitic and less dense than it.

    I don’t use social media and have little chance to interact with young people but, when I do, I’m amazed at their lack of knowledge about all sorts of things I thought everybody knew. They are equally amazed at the things I share with them, most of it not about CC. Their grasp of history is scant. They don’t know, for instance, that the UK was the first country to ban slavery and that, because of our Empire, we were able to ban it in vast swathes of the world and influence others to do the same. A positive aspect of Empire they had not been taught.

    They are very astute I find and lap up information gladly. The problem we have is how to get the information out there to them. I would guess that most “sceptics” are not young and not involved with the social media interaction with the young, I may be wrong here, but what we need is sites like this and others such as Tony Heller’s Real Climate Science to enter their world. If they hit a chord, the sites might go viral and the young might then start asking awkward questions of their tutors. That should be fun to watch.

      I’m afraid most young people lack even the most basic education. They know nothing about much of history beyond some stuff about what the Tudor serf wore and have no grasp of actual science whatsoever. Worse, they have no way of learning because they haven’t been taught how to read critically, analyse and think logically. Worst of all they have literally no knowledge of the arguments and history of our freedoms and our rights. They know nothing of the Civil War, theAmerican or French revolutions, the Enlightenment and the battles for free speech, religious toleration, the rights of Man. They actually believe that they are the first generation to notice racism and intolerance.

    The Education Act 1996 states

    Section 406 Political Indoctrination
    1) The Local Authority, governing body and head teacher shall forbid:
    a) the pursuit of partisan political activities by any of those registered pupil at a maintained school who are junior pupils, and
    b) the promotion of partisan political views in the teaching of any subject in the school.

    2) In the case of activities which take place otherwise than on the school premises, subsection (1) (a) applies only where arrangements for junior pupils to take part in the activities are made by –
    a) any member of the school’s staff (in his capacity as such), or
    b) anyone acting on behalf of the school or a member of the school’s staff (in is capacity as such).

    3) In this section “maintained school” includes a community or foundation special school established in a hospital.

    Section 407 Duty to secure balanced treatment of political issues.
    1) The Local Authority, governing body and headteacher shall take such steps as are reasonably practicable to secure that where political issues are brought to the attention of pupils while they are –
    a) in attendance at a maintained school, or
    b) taking part in extra-curricular activities which are provided for registered pupils at the school by or on behalf of the school,
    they are offered a balanced presentation of opposing views.

    2) In this section “maintained school” includes a community or foundation special school established in a hospital.

    This part of the Education Act was invoked in the Stuart Dimmock court action against The Department of Education re the showing of “An Inconvenient Truth” at his daughter’s school, back in around 2008. The judge did not ban the film, but said balancing materials should be presented if the film was used, by which time it had probably been shown to all the school kids of the day in Britain! One of these was our new MP Anthony Mangnall, who admitted he had seen the film, and is perpetually angry with me for daring to challenge this orthodoxy in our local paper.

    I think we’re being a bit harsh on the girl, after all, according to Cook et al, 97% of climate scientists believe in man made global warming of whom, 123% still believe in the tooth fairy. Or something like that.

    When I read Aimee’s first question I was totally on her side, thinking “surely Paul is not about to poke fun at an 11 year old who has the courage to admit she doesn’t know something”. I had already started to compose the comment I would send, then I read the rest. Very sad.

    Mad Mike says we need a term to counter the alarmists’ use of “climate change”. My first thought is “Normal Severe Weather” or NSW. Teach the kids (and very many adults) to reply with “But surely that’s just NSW?” whenever a regular event occurs that is portrayed as evidence for CC, or GW in old money!

    Two recent examples of my own. Firstly I helped my daughter with some homework in which she had to list the most abundant greenhouse gases. When she got her marked work back it had water vapour underlined with a footnote saying “water vapour is not a gas”. Somewhat aghast (to put it mildly) I contacted the school and was put through to the Geography teacher concerned. When i questioned her knowledge of the subject and pointed out that water vapour most certainly is a gas she replied “you must be one of those deniers”. My next action was a personal visit to the Head and extracted a formal written apology with a covering point that further education of the teaching staff on the subject had been enacted.
    You might think that was a positive result but in subsequent physics homework I was surprised to find that a science teacher questioned a calculation I had helped her with.(I have a physics degree). Again I contacted the school, and was put through to the science teacher I asked what they felt the mass of a litre of water actually was – blank response. I thought the chap was taking the piss until I realised he genuinely did not know. I asked how he could mark the answer wrong when he finally admitted he didn’t fully understand the equation. His response was that it wasn’t in the “marking schedule so he wasn’t “allowed” to mark it right.
    This was in an “Outstanding” rated grammar school in Kent – I also despair..

      I remember, from long ago, well before O’ levels, that when a traditional kettle boils, and we ‘see all that steam’, what we are seeing is the steam that has hit cooler air and condensed into water droplets. The steam is in that gap between the spout and the visible water droplets.

      I expect that is now post grad stuff, and only for Physics (and Chemistry 🙂 ) graduates at that.

    3. News Article – Brain Biases. Direct students to read the BBC news article. Using the worksheet students should read and then reread, pulling out different pieces of information as they go.

    Also when I want to read about science the last place I go is the BBC!

    There is a wealth of incredible rubbish on the site all from activist infested charities and organisation but on the resources page I had to smile when I read the following at the bottom

    "Health Warning!
    As part of their charm offensive, some companies, which support the use of gas, coal, etc., run educational events and produce resources for schools. We recommend that you avoid resources produced by these companies, e.g. BP, as we don't think they are the most unbiased source when climate change is involved".

    That is straight out of the marxist playbook. accuse others of doing what you do yourself.

    These people and their like are deadly serious and like to organize ( another nod to their marxist intentions), unlike we “deniers”.

    It would appear that in the minds of at least some of these marxists, climate has been “stable” until …..soon. Indeed they seem to write the climate will become unstable (what does that mean) in the….oh guess what “IN THE FUTURE..oh what a surprise!

    The obvious question on everyone’s lips must surely be ” exactly WHEN what the Earth’s climate “static or stable”?

    Their basis lack of understanding of what they claim to be protesting just reinforces my view that this is just window dressing for their real goal which is marxist chaos.

    Also when I want to read about science the last place I go is the BBC!

    There is a wealth of incredible rubbish on the site all from activist infested charities and organisation but on the resources page I had to smile when I read the following at the bottom :

    These people and their like are deadly serious and like to organize ( another nod to their marxist intentions), unlike we “deniers”.

      For their next campaign I suggest they stop Night occurring. Obviously in a benign past nirvana we only had daylight. Then man’s machines made the sun disappear periodically and thus evil mankind produced Night. Their new mission is to bless everyone, everywhere with continual daylight. This they can achieve because they know the world is flat despite evil deniers saying it isnt !-)

    What a state this country has become. A bit of good news, I spoke with a few of my neighbours children about climate change, and their response was, they teach us rubbish but we know the reality.

    At first , I read every post on this website and agreed with 99% of what was written. Now I just scan the comments rapidly and while still agreeing with 99% of what is written, they are becoming blurred. Why?
    Well we all know that the disciples of “climate change” are sheep, following “leaders” who have their own agendas, but things now are getting out of hand. I’m reminded of the story of the King’s new cloak, except that it is so sad to see “King” David A. being used by the unscrupulous forces behind this, the World’s greatest fraud.
    Now mainstream politicians in the West are being persuaded to bankrupt their countries with green energy policies, while China, India and Russia etc. continue to grow more powerful, by ignoring any curbs on their polluting ways.
    This last post by Paul, illustrates what the West is now up against, the organised brainwashing of the population. These sinister forces driving the climate fraud are so well organised, that they feel that they can entrust the brainwashing of young children to “intellectuals” like Aimee.
    The airing of our views makes us feel better, but does nothing to stop the highly organised “Climate Change Army” bulldozing down the fabric of Western society.
    Paul, do you know any influential people or politicians with more than one brain cell, who could start up a movement against the misinformation that is being bandied about by Aimee , David and their followers?

    I once happened to make a passing mention in conversation that octopii were molluscs. I soon found that I was being roundly ridiculed by one of the others at the table – who amazingly was a *science teacher* by profession!
    I asked, “If you don’t think they are molluscs, what *do* you think they are?” Well this person hemmed and hawed, tried to avoid the question etc. but eventually came up with . . .
    “Reptiles”.
    So that’s my impression of science teaching in the UK.
