IPCC report is ‘code red for humanity’

August 9, 2021

By Paul Homewood

The new IPCC report is out, and unsurprisingly jacks up the alarm, as the absurd Matt McGrath reports:

Humanity’s damaging impact on the climate is a "statement of fact", say UN scientists in a landmark study.

The report says that ongoing emissions of warming gases could also see a key temperature limit broken in just over a decade.

The authors also show that a rise in sea levels approaching 2m by the end of this century "cannot be ruled out".

But there is new hope that deep cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases could stabilise rising temperatures.

This sober assessment from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) features in a 42-page document known as the Summary for Policymakers.

It leads a series of reports that will be published over coming months and is the first major review of the science of climate change since 2013. Its release comes less than three months before a key climate summit in Glasgow known as COP26.

"Today’s IPCC Working Group 1 Report is a code red for humanity," said UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

"If we combine forces now, we can avert climate catastrophe. But, as today’s report makes clear, there is no time for delay and no room for excuses. I count on government leaders and all stakeholders to ensure COP26 is a success."

According to Prof Ed Hawkins, from the University of Reading, UK, and one of the report’s authors, the scientists cannot be any clearer on this point.

"It is a statement of fact, we cannot be any more certain; it is unequivocal and indisputable that humans are warming the planet."

Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, said: "By using sports terms, one could say the atmosphere has been exposed to doping, which means we have begun observing extremes more often than before."

The authors say that since 1970, global surface temperatures have risen faster than in any other 50-year period over the past 2,000 years.

This warming is "already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every region across the globe".

Whether it’s heatwaves like the ones recently experienced in Greece and western North America, or floods like those in Germany and China, "their attribution to human influence has strengthened" over the past decade.

As I commented last week, this is the Summary for Policymakers (SPM), the result of negotiations between governments. In other words it is a political statement, not a scientific document. The latter won’t be published until much later, probably long after COP26.

And as Guterres makes clear, the whole object of the SPM is to scare governments into signing up to the UN agenda at COP26.

Notably there is nothing in the BBC report, and therefore presumably in the SPM, to show that extreme weather has actually got any worse. Nor does it seem likely that the full scientific review either, given that the IPCC has failed to find any evidence in earlier reports. Indeed, the only mention  is this:

Instead it is all about projections of doom and catastrophe, based on computer models written by grant addicted climate scientists. Every IPCC Assessment Report since the first in 1990 has threatened us with apocalypse, and none of their warnings of disaster have come true. But that has not stopped each report using ever stronger language.

Consequently we are treated to threats of a 2 meter sea level rise, an ice-free Arctic,  an increasing occurrence of some extreme events "unprecedented in the historical record”, and wildfires.

We’re not rolling over on our backs and blindly fallen into line to impoverish ourselves by making the changes that the warmists have decreed are necessary to save the world from its thermopocalypse, so they’re doubling down on the apocalyptic doomcrying, hoping that if they just get more dire with their predictions, we’ll accept their pravda and accept their control over our lives.

What a very, very interesting article on the situation of forestry in Greece and the effect of fires, of which the report says that very few (3%) have natural causes, most being due to human influences.
Similar reports should be done for every country, but I suspect will not because the conclusions won’t fit the narrative.

Fortunately for us all, the weather / climate don’t give a monkeys what the models say: they never have an never will as the models are so primitive.

“If climate change is the existential threat that alarmists claim” then all the greenies would support a massive roll out of nuclear power plants à la messmer plan.

But of course they will not because their plan has nothing to do with the climate which is just being corrupted as a cover for their agenda. In searching google for the above link to the Messmer Plan the first link that came up was…

So even though their religious head office (the IPCC) promotes Nuclear power and the likes of all their gurus (Hansen, Caldeira, Wigley, Emmanuel etc etc) also support nuclear, they refuse to. Why? Because they know it solves the “problem” they have artificially imagined. Even the Graun had to print this

Show that to a greenie (I have on the Graun’s own chat forum) and unbelievably (almost) and you will get shouted down by claims that climate scientists have no expertise in the energy sector!

This is the calculation. It’s basic Arithmetic, nothing fancy, no hidden agenda, just factual information.

Atmospheric CO2 levels in 1850 (beginning of the Industrial Revolution): ~280ppm (parts per million atmospheric content).

        Atmospheric CO2 level in 2021: ~410ppm.
        410ppm minus 280ppm = 130ppm ÷ 171 years (2021 minus 1850) = 0.76ppm of which man is responsible for ~3% = ~0.02ppm.

That’s every human on the planet and every industrial process adds ~0.02ppm CO2 to the atmosphere per year on average.

At that rate mankind’s CO2 contribution to the atmosphere would take more than 20,000 years to double the CO2 content in the atmosphere which, the IPCC states, would cause around 2°C of temperature rise. That’s ~0.0001°C increase per year for 20,000 years.

One hundred (100) generations of humanity from now (assuming ~ 25 years per generation) would experience warming of ~0.25°C more than we have today.

The Manua Loa CO2 observatory (and others) can identify and illustrate Natures seasonal variations of atmospheric CO2, but does not distinguish between natural and man made atmospheric CO2.

Hardly surprising really, mankind’s CO2 emissions are completely independent of seasonal variation and should reveal itself as a straight line, but is so inconsequential, this ‘vital component’ of Global Warming is not/can’t be illustrated.

The global fall in output of man made CO2 over the last 16 months of the Covid-19 pandemic, estimated at ~14% (14% of ~0.02ppm CO2 = 0.0028ppm) does not register anywhere on the Manua Loa data.

        Why am I not surprised?!

0.89 degrees C per doubling of atmospheric CO2 ie to 800ppm. Tops.
This is still less than the ideal greenhouse CO2 of 1000ppm for growing food.
It cannot be achieved even if we burn all available fossil fuels.
Humans are quite happy at 10,000 ppm. We die (and plants) at below 150ppm.
CO2 appears to be dangerously low.
Who the hell wants a return to glaciation?

It is virtually certain that… heatwaves have been more common.

Yet one hundred years ago in 1921:

“ITALY: Venice, July 30. The principal phenomena which prevailed [this week] was the intensely hot weather. An unprecedented heat wave continued to develop in its intensity of heat and in length of its duration. For several weeks the heat has increased until the past week the temperature has been up in the high nineties for day after day, and unofficial reports of over 100° have been frequent. The extremely high humidity has practically brought active business to a standstill, and has caused many deaths and heat exhaustions. The principal damage caused by the heat wave is the protracted period of drought which accompanies it. Agriculture is the chief sufferer from the heat and drought and no alleviation appears in sight. Weeks of cloudless scorching days have played havoc with the crops which were in progress when the heat wave began.”

Atmospheric CO2 was at pre-industrial levels. Something else must have created all of this extreme weather.

How disappointing that GWPF is endorsing the anthropogenic CO2 meme:

“30 years after the IPCC’s first report and despite yearly UN climate conferences it is now beyond doubt that renewable energy policies have failed to halt or slow the relentless rise in global CO2 emissions.

In the wake of the publication today of the IPCC’s 6 Assessment Report (AR6) the UK government, like many around the world, will face growing calls to “do more” to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

In truth, many governments, and the UK is a clear example, are already trying extremely hard to reduce emissions. They are spending very heavily on emissions reduction technologies, mostly on renewable energy. Income support subsidies to renewables in the UK alone cost consumers over £10 billion a year, a total that is still rising.

However, these policies have only destroyed industry in the West and exported production and their CO2 emissions to areas still using low cost fossil fuels, such as China. The conclusion is obvious. Climate policies are failing not because of a lack of political will, but because the technologies selected are extortionately expensive and ineffective, and are already stimulating public resistance.”

We do not need to halt or slow the “relentless rise in CO2 emissions”, nor can we do so, as shown by the pandemic. The only thing relentless in all this is 30 years of propaganda. “Climate policies” will not control the climate. CO2 does not drive global temperatures. Increases in atmospheric CO2 do not correlate with anthropogenic emissions, nor do they correlate with annual temperature changes. (see Spurious Correlations In Time Series Data: A Note, Jamal Munshi, 2016). The 2 degree and 1.5 degree C “targets” have no basis in science. “2 degrees” was first introduced by economist William Nordhaus in 1975 and resurrected by Schellnhuber in 1995.

Margaret Thatcher on climate change, 2003

“In matters of public policy, it is important to recognize what we don’t know, as much as what we do. Governments, in this respect, are not like private individuals.

An individual can most of the time act on hunches or incomplete information without doing any great harm. But governments, whose actions affect millions of individuals, must be much more circumspect.

The golden rule is: All government interventions are problematic, so intervene only when the case is fully proven.”

The present wide-spread and persistent tendency toward warmer weather, and especially the recent long series of mild winters, has attracted considerable public interest; so much so that frequently the question is asked “Is our climate changing?”

“In concluding this study, other weather features directly related to general temperature conditions were examined such as the occurrence of frost in the fall and spring, the number of days in winter with certain low temperatures, the occurrence of freezing weather in the fall and spring seasons, the length of the winters, as indicated by the first frost in fall and the last in spring, etc. All of these confirm the general statement that we are in the midst of a period of abnormal warmth, which has come on more or less gradually for many years.”

Atmospheric CO2 was at pre-industrial levels. After about 1940 this warming abated while CO2 continued to rise. Something other than a CO2 “control knob” must have been the cause.

Yes, the BBC have mentioned the report just once or twice during the day…

To achieve a 2 m mean sea level rise by 2100 would need a average annual rate of 25mm per year.
The report makes this prediction, so credibility zero?

“rise in sea levels approaching 2m by the end of this century “cannot be ruled out”. ”

& sea ice in The Canary Islands by the end of this century “cannot be ruled out” either.
Both scenarios are possible … but neither is probable.

    • August 9, 2021 5:48 pm

It is strange that no one ever points out that sea level have been rising as ice has been melting, both coinciding with the warming after the little Ice Age.

When the snow and ice accumulated during that period melts then a change in sea level is inevitable and started over 250 years ago. Similarly sea levels fell when the ice started to accumulate. its not rocket science

Rest assured, these things have been pointed out many times. But alarmists don’t want rational thought or logic, they want scary headlines.

So they measure temps from 1850-1900; precipitation from 1950;droughts from 1950s;storm tracks from 1980s; glaciers from 1990s. I wonder why? Droughts dont seem to be getting worse and little confidence in heavy precipitation being worse. Are hockey sticks back in fashion? What happened to the Roman and Mediaeval warm periods?

Why is it that the mainstream media do not allow or show alternative views to be aired. I understand it is because they believe or have been told that the science is settled. Well at one time the earth was considered flat and it was considered to be the centre of the universe until sceptics challenged the consensus view. So let’s have alternative views and then we can make informed judgements

    Worth reminding ourselves:
“The UN has been predicting planetary disaster for decades, usually scheduled to happen in about a decade’s time. In 1972 – half a century ago – Maurice Strong, the first UN Environment Programme director warned that the world “had just 10 years to avoid catastrophe”. In 1982 his successor, Mostafa Tolba, the then head of the UN Environment Programme told the world that it had just 18 years before “an environmental catastrophe as irreversible as any nuclear holocaust”. Yet 2000 came and went and we just partied like it was 1999…”

“A Red Code for Humanity”! Hahahahaha! How many million dollars did that cost and bloated plutocrats had to get together to come up with that latest piece of climate language inflation?

Where do they go after that? The (Un)democrats in the US have already called climate “racist”.
I know I know but I have to ask. Does the BBC not know how this report is produced?

Oh it’s not only children, millenials and Gen-Z as well. I was born in 1988 and during the 90s-2000s the doomsday predictions of global warming were already mainstream. I was pretty convinced myself until a couple of years ago (and, funnily enough, it was a topic I brought up when I went to a therapist some years ago). Lots of people around my age have terrible anxiety over it, and some even aren’t sure about having children bc of that reason alone.

Incredibly, the disgraceful hockey stick is still in use.
The report is 3949 pages long and mostly unreadable, (over 3 times the equally undecipherable bible). The longer a “justifying” book is the less I trust it: the best theses are very short as the proof is clear and simple…….

The IPCC technical section admits that they have little understanding of clouds but claim that the models are getting better (based on the models of course). The report avoids cloud cover-variation as humidity increases and rainfall increases.

As in all of the reports, the calculation of Radiant Forcing Factor is a committee-based judgement – this is incredible given that the RFF is the thing that drives the models. The RFF varies from 1 to 8.4 W/m2 in various models ,according to the feedback assumed. They have not used HITRAN or anything technical, unlike David Coe’s recent articles that use real physics to calculate the ECE and RFF.

Almost every conclusion is fairly confident or high confidence, with no real justification for the level of confidence of course.

Had a quick look at the back-up report behind the SPM (I know there’s always previously been a complete disconnect between the two but you never know) – 3949 pages; a search for “empirical evidence” brings up only a handful of references, none setting out any evidence; dipping in at random brings up only modelling stuff – so I suspect it’s the usual troughers working for the Great Reset.

IPCC report is ‘code red for humanity’
“Code Red” = socialist destruction of Western economy, industry and employment with the imposition national and personal ‘Carbon’ credits through the One World Government(OWG).
A OWG operating on strict socialist/Marxist-Leninist methods. Offering the standard socialist fare of a ruling elite enjoying everything and anything they want, and everyone else working for the elites, and their crony capitalists. Then ‘workers’ allowed to perish when they are no longer useful; terminated by bureaucratically enhanced neglect — e.g. the confusion and laxity of the WHO responses, the UK’s NHS ongoing eugenics for the old, the deliberate US mess of the CDC and US NIAID, UN ‘Peace-keepers’ that do not keep the peace, etc.

There I’d dissent against the BBC and other mainstream media. Though it’s not reported on BBC radio 4.
This was emotional because it was about children.
Will a movement developed when people become aware of the Great Reset and how much it will cost the individual ?

“their attribution to human influence has strengthened”

This is pure nonsense. You simply cannot attribute increased probability to a single cause without (i) knowing prior probability and (ii) knowing all other possible causes. That we are spending such vast sums on such flimsy evidence is madness.

Time to ask our MPs to call ‘code red’ (red card) on the BBC? (I have) After all, it’s Parliament who created the BBC’s legal Charter to impartiality, and the BBC who are making a mockery of Parliament, and bringing them into disrepute. Oh dear. Not one of the authors seems to realise that a Grand Solar Minimum (GSM) has started and we are entering its early phases. Warming out to 2040? Risible. It will be cold then.

Sea levels rising three times faster? Risible. Ice will be increasing so sea levels will fall.
