Has Bob Ward Heard Of The AMO?

Bob Ward makes a fool of himself again!

Yes, the number of major Atlantic hurricanes has increased in the last four decades, but this is because of the AMO, not climate change, as NOAA explain:

The AMO moved into its warm phase around 1995, following thirty years in its cold phase. Prior to that it was in its warm cycle between the 1930s and 50s:

And when we check out the data for major Atlantic hurricanes, we find that they were just as frequent as now during that earlier warm phase:

There has been no trend in major hurricanes worldwide since 1990, confirming the cyclical effect of the AMO:

This is why the IPCC say there is “low confidence” in long term (multi decadal to centennial) trends in tropical cyclones.

If the clown Bob Ward does not know this, he is incompetent.

Paul, I have made up my mind. Stop trying to confuse me with facts…
The profession of scientist is tarnished by this sort of comment from Bob Ward. How very sad that so many should be misled, believing that anyone calling themselves a scientist must act in good faith and be honest…

Maybe they should call themselves “career academics”. For many, this is a much better fit than “scientist” (one who practises the scientific method).

Paul , there is more than the imprint of the ‘cyclical effect of the AMO ” manifest in Ryan Maue’s ” Major Hurricanes ” [ Cat 3-5 ] or ” All Hurricanes ” 12 month global chronologies .[ Bjorn Lomborg charted Ryan Maue’s 1980 – 20 ACE index onto a bar graph revealing 22 of the 40 years were below 100% ACE meaning they were sub – intensity years and there is no worsening trend much to the embarrassment of that twit Bob Ward ] ..Rather there is a close correlation of at least nine ENSO events , hurricane peaks and sub peaks in the undulating series centered on El Nino episodes or split years : 1983 ; 1991 ; 1993 ; 1997 – 98 ; 2003 ; 2006 ; 2009 ; the extreme El Nino episode of 2015 – 16 that stands out like a sore thumb , and 2019 …..Note the conspicuous gap years 98 – 02 corresponding to the hurricane lull … It may be worthwhile contrasting the ENSO graph and Maue’s global hurricane series . https://ggweather.com/enso/oni.htm

Bob Ward is a propagandist for the Grantham Institute. Would Goebbles have ever allowed an inconvenient fact to influence his story?

And the Grantham Foundation provides financial support to the AAAS, the publisher of SCIENCE magazine. Supporters of global warming scenarios. Skeptics need not submit manuscripts or comments to the editors. They have little chance. Lord Stern is also from that “agency”…a strong supporter of carbon capture and storage…to save the planet from CO2.

Who is Bob Ward? Sorry, I should know. Sounds like just another print journo hanging on to his job by his fingernails. Any story will do.

    • August 30, 2021 8:29 pm

He’s the “Communications Director” for the Grantham Foundation

“Who is Bob Ward?” It would be too much of a fag for me to explain. Sorry just had to get that in there…as the Bishop said to the Bishop.

Sorry to have to ask, but can’t find any definition or description of MAO.

can’t find any definition or description of MAO.

Neither can I, maybe the title is a hint?

He was a big Chinese guy who wrote a little red book and started an eponymous Marxist political movement.

The basics of the AMO are explained at the FAQ linked by Paul.

AMO. And don’t forget the equatorial Pacific ENSO that has an influence on hurricanes and typhoons, Monsoons… and the US West Coast weather. Another entirely natural event with no correlation/relationship with AGW CO2.

Throughout the nineteen forties and fifties the common refrain in North America about someone doing an obvious con job was to say…..they might as well try to sell you land in Florida…… That was because people would be enticed to visit Florida during the favored season and buy some apparently beautiful land. Every year, an Atlantic hurricane would come in and flood out any construction that had been started. Buying Florida land on the basis of its appearance and location was seen as such a sucker play that only a fool would consider it.

Even as a kid, I knew that Atlantic hurricanes were really frequent and then for some reason they stopped happening so often, so it wasn’t the fool’s errand it used to be. Which is to say that even as a pre-teen I understood the dynamics of the Florida hurricane seasons better than Bob Ward (and others).

THE US had very few if any major landfalling hurricanes between 2009 and 2016. Louisiana had one Category 1 (minor) hurricane in that period.

What’s the story there, Bob Ward?

Ward is the PR man for Jeremy Grantham
    the big green hedgefund guy

The “Cold Warm Cold” chart is deceptive.

The water in the Atlantic Ocean where hurricanes form is ALWAYS warm
    Never cold.

In addition, there has been little change of the average temperature in the tropics during the warmer months of the year, so I am confident “Cold Warm Cold” is an exaggeration.
