Asia Building Hundreds Of Coal Power Plants

October 29, 2021

By Paul Homewood

UDANGUDI, India/TOKYO, Oct 29 (Reuters) – On the coastline near India’s southern tip, workers toil on a pier carrying a conveyor belt that cuts a mile into the Indian Ocean where the azure waters are deep enough for ships to berth and unload huge cargoes of coal.

The belt will carry millions of tonnes of coal each year to a giant power plant several kilometres inland that will burn the fuel for at least 30 years to generate power for the more than 70 million people that live in India’s Tamil Nadu state.

The Udangudi plant is one of nearly 200 coal-fired power stations under construction in Asia, including 95 in China, 28 in India and 23 in Indonesia, according to data from U.S. nonprofit Global Energy Monitor (GEM).

This new fleet will produce planet-warming emissions for decades and is a measure of the challenge world leaders face when they meet for climate talks in Glasgow, where they hope to sound the death knell for coal as a source of power.

Coal use is one of the many issues dividing industrialised and developing countries as they seek to tackle climate change.

Many industrialised countries have been shutting down coal plants for years to reduce emissions. The United States alone has retired 301 plants since 2000.

But in Asia, home to 60% of the world’s population and about half of global manufacturing, coal’s use is growing rather than shrinking as rapidly developing countries seek to meet booming demand for power.

More than 90% of the 195 coal plants being built around the world are in Asia, according to data from GEM.

Tamil Nadu is India’s second-most industrialised state and is one of the country’s top renewable energy producers. But it is also building the most coal-fired plants in the country. read more

"We cannot depend on just solar and wind," a senior official at Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corp told Reuters.

"You can have the cake of coal and an icing of solar," he said, declining to be named as he was not authorised to speak to media.

Boris is intelligent but he lacks the knowledge to make use of it, he admitted at the start of his reign that he did not understand climate change but that he was surrounded by people who did. The question therefore is, how does he decide which advisers to listen to?
Ministers despair because Boris ‘does his own thing’ and does not listen to THEM. Boris is on record as being pro fracking and anti green before he came to office, so what changed? We are left with the only plausible answer – he wishes to go on screwing his nubile young wife and nothing else matters. Churchill would turn in his grave.

Now here’s something for the gullible at COP26 to mull over – all those hundreds of coal power stations coming on stream but despite all the predictions of woe from the “experts” warming just isn’t happening. Indeed perhaps the world is cooling – the coldest winter in Antarctica since 1957, a run of bitterly cold winters in the extreme north, Brazil coffee crop blighted by exceptional frost and snow, ditto French wines. Perhaps COP26 should worry about cooling instead of warming.

How to Clean up Pollution and Save Planet Earth

The power generating station at Belldune New Brunswick was the first in Canada to install scrubbers to help reduce Sulphur dioxide emissions. It has an electrostatic precipitator that removes over 99% of particles in the flue gases. It has special burners to limit Nitrogen Oxide emissions. An upgrade began in July 2004 which saw a Titan ProAsh facility that recaptures 75% of the fly ash produced by the generating station. Water from the Smoke Stack Scrubbers is recycled. This eliminates the use of a ‘Tailings Pond’. The effluent removed from the water has resulted in the production of a Synthetic Gypsum Byproduct (Drywall) which is then sold, all over North America.

There is mostly steam coming out the chimney . . . Like at all Natural Gas Plants!!

Environmentalists are screaming to have this plant shut down . . . not because it is clean . . .

Because it burns coal, A bad, bad Fossil Fuel . . . Clean Energy . . . somehow bad??

And going even further is the race to eliminate the only source of energy for transportation…carbon fuels. Biofuels are 90% fossil fuel and are burned as soon as they are added to conventional vehicles. Never mind the replenishing of the 90% of fossil fuel, if that 10% ethanol is not replaced by new agricultural sources, how can they not be eliminated if rapid lowering of CO2 emissions is the goal? Remember, replanting corn or sugar cane and harvesting it requires transportation… making the entire cycle even more difficult to stay “carbon neutral”. A Ponzi scheme?

        The Dark Ages Cooling Period:

A new era which ended those “glory days” of Roman superiority in the known world. You guessed it . . . Volcanoes. This time two colossal volcanoes on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean erupted more or less at the same time (in planetary terms). First the notorious Indonesian volcano Krakatoa erupted as a VEI 7 volcano. Early Chinese reports of this eruption have been confirmed. Then, more or less in the same year, Ilopango in El Salvador, Central America, erupted as a VEI 6.9 volcano. Documentary evidence clearly demonstrates that the years 535 – 536 would launch the worst natural climactic disruption in 10,000 years. Global changes resulting from the environmental catastrophe affected humans from Mongolia to Constantinople, Greenland to Antarctica which precipitated plague, famine and widespread death from starvation and disease.. Great migrations and tumultuous events ensued which brought on the fall of the great Mexican city of Teotihuacan, the Anglo-Saxon victory over the Celts and the rise of the unified peoples of China. If one volcano, Tambora, registering 7 on the VEI index brought volcanic winter to the summer of 1816, just imagine the consequences of two in the same year . . . A quote in shivering detail is ascribed to Cassiodorus by Rampino et al. “the sun . . . seems to have lost its wonted light, and appears of a blush color. We marvel to see no shadows of our bodies at noon, to feel the mighty vigour of the sun’s heat wasted into feebleness, and the phenomena which accompany an eclipse prolonged through almost a whole year. We have had . . . a summer without heat . . . the crops have been chilled by north winds . . . the rain is denied . . .”

        – The plague of Justinian (541-542) wiped out 25% of the
        population of the known world
        – There were 7 years of crop failures including 50% of the citizens
of Rome (the first known version of the Bubonic Plague)
        – Empires around the world fell
        – In places drought destroyed the land and the crops
        – In others torrential rains and floods brought chaos and death
        – Tree ring growth did not return to normal for 15 years
        – Even the Nile and the Black Sea were known to have frozen over
        in 829 and 1010
        – Temperatures took up to 30 years to return to normal
        – The “Bavarian hordes” descended from northern European
        countries in search of food
        and arable land.
        – Armies were able to cross the frozen Rhyne River and defeat the
Romans in their encampments to the east without using the
heavily fortified bridges to get there.
        – The Avar, a horse based tribe of Mongols moved west through
the mountains to Carpathia to challenge what was left of the
        Romans to the East.
        – Mass graves first for the starving and then for the plague ridden
are to be found throughout the known civilized world.
        – In China “yellow dust rained like snow”…The following year crops
were ruined by snow in August

So, this was the beginning of what we now call The Dark Ages Cooling Period. At its height the cooling was known to cause freezing of the Nile in 829 and 1010 and The Black Sea froze in 800 and 801 AD (Pidwirny, 2006). These two volcanoes, Ilopango and Krakatoa, each were equal to Tambora in 1815. Two together, has more than double the climatological effect and lasts more than twice as long . . . it has a logarithmic effect on global climate. So changed was our planet at this time, that humanity would take hundreds of years to recover socially, politically and culturally. Lead poisoning, the plague and famine had taken the stuffing out of the intelligencia of a world that had so flourished but a decade before. Beyond the human toll no reference is ever made as to the status of wildlife under these conditions – the word bleak is all that comes to mind.

Sone (In Planetary terms) one of these monster Volcanoes will blow . . . Then we we learn that Nature is the true ruler of Climate Change on Planet Earth !

Jim Le Maistre : ” The Dark Ages Cooling Period …..You guessed it …Volcanoes …two colossal volcanoes on opposite sides of the Pacific ..”

Yes ” a little more science ” and, more importantly, independent research and critical thinking “would go a long way ” [ Tone down the excitable exclamation marks too ] . Start with the paper ” What Caused Terrestrial Dust Loading and Climate Downturns Between AD 533 and 540 ” ? , Abbott , Barron et al , Geological Society of America Special Papers , 2014 ;505

The more promising and plausible hypothesis for the 536 – 45 solar dust veil/dry fog event is outlined in the papers Abstract : ” Both cometary dust and volcanic sulfate probably contributed to the profound global dimming during AD 536 and 537 ”

Analyses of GISP2 ice cores have revealed that encriched Tin [Sn ] Nickel [Ni ] Fe -oxide particles and cosmic spherules of suspected cometary origin were discovered in mixed assemblages at a depth interstice of 362 -360 m corresponding to the calendrical timespan AD 533 – 540. One eyewitness observer of the atmospheric turbidity and cometary debris influx was Zachariah of Mitylene who wrote : ” And the stars in the sky had appeared dancing in a strange manner [ meteoritic ablation ] and it was the summer of the year eleven [ AD 533 ] . And it lasted about six or seven years until the year three [ AD 540 ] Isn’t that intriguing ? Cassiodorous in his letter number 25 mentioned ” something mysterious and unusual seems to be coming on us from the stars ”

The volume of cometary material in the GISP2 core peaked in AD 533 and gradually declined by 539 -40 – precisely corroborating the ‘dancing stars phenomenon witnessed by Zachariah of Mitlylene. The volcanic eruption sulphate signals in the ice layers however are dated to 535 -36 and 529 . One can see the conundrum here for those firmly in the ‘volcanogenic ‘ camp. We see the Ni , and Sn rich particles , cosmic spherules package at three junctures in what I have termed the 7 -8 year ‘Zachariah timeframe ” : 533 ; 536 – 37 [ alongside tropical marine micro-fossils and calcium carbonate ] and 539 . The second highest ammonium spike within the section 1642 AD to 850 BC is situated at AD 539 -40. The 1908 Tunguska bolide caused an ammonium residue [ probably from igniting nitrogen gas in the atmosphere ] anomaly in Greenland ice dated to June of that year . It should logically follow the 539 -40 spike is a meteor impact proxy. Mike Baillie notes that the real ‘crash ‘ in sixth century European oak chronologies from Ireland to Poland , occurs in 540 -41 .Compiling his history in the Middle Ages ,Roger of Wendover chronicled this entry : ” In the year of grace 541 there appeared a comet in Gaul so vast that the whole sky seemed on fire ”

Interestingly , the orbit of Comet Halley [ possibly volatile from its perhelion passage ] and its trailing Eta Aquarid meteor shower intersected the Earths ecliptic plane in precessional ‘descending node ‘ during the period AD 528 – 537 [ Figure 6 , Abbott et al ] .These close brushes may be the source of the cometary material and atmospheric opacity compunded by volcanoes

Apart from the Halley / Eta Aquarid and Orionid stream intersections with the Earths orbit there is also speculative evidence of cometary disintegration in the Taurid Complex circa 500 AD that may have injected debris into the inner solar system placing the Earth at enhanced risk of bombardment during the Late Antiquity Dark Ages when pestilent mists plague and ‘fiery dragons ‘ [ bolide allegories ] were laying waste to human societies

The Taurid Complex meteor streams were studied by the astronomers Fred Whipple and S. Hamid at Helwan Observatory 70 years ago . Their retro -calculations of ” nine photographic [ Taurid ] meteor orbits ……found the orbital planes of …..[three ] orbits coincided with one another but not with Comet Encke 1500 years ago . The authors theorized ” that the Taurid streams were formed chiefly by a violent ejection of material some 1500 years ago from a body moving in an orbit of similar shape and longitude of perihelion but somewhat greater aphelion distance’ And the clincher is the 1400 – 1500 BP surge in extraterrestrial dust signified by elevated cobalt and REE indices in the ombotrophic peat mire analyses undertaken by Roger Cropp and Lars Franzen [ ‘ The Peatland /Ice Age Hypothesis Revised , Adding a Possible Glacial Pulse Trigger ‘ , Geofrafisker Annaler ,2007 ]

      Stuart Hamish,

Well Said, well researched and again, a return to natural influencers from the planet and the Universe in which we live. Our commentary should be of some influence somewhere in modern ‘Climate Science’, but it is NOT. The field of ‘Environmental Science’ has a 270 year time line and they are sticking to it. As you and many others well know we have a vast array of sources of Ice Core data going back at least 600 million years. None of this ever sees the light of day in contemporary ‘Climate Change’ analysis.

The field of environmental science is not limited to a 270 year timeline [ You contradicted yourself commenting on the 535 – 36 climatic catastrophe and the Late Antiquity Cooling Period and the IPCC’s hockey stick is a millennium range dataset ] We do not have a ‘vast array of sources of ice core data going back at least 600 million years ” .. Geological proxies yes – not uninterrupted ice cap stratigraphy extending that far back in time . There were periods during the primordial warm epochs when the poles were completely devoid of ice Furthermore genetic analyses of the Yersina Pestis pathogen have shown the infectious bacterium is considerably older than the Justinian Plague and it did not initially break out in Rome as you claimed ..You are babbling gibberish …..Do you have any other online aliases ?

You are correct . . . But we have the technology to make it as clean as Natural Gas . . .
But our Environmentalist friends do not subscribe to clean-up. Their GOAL is to shut down the Fossil Fuel Industry. Climate Change, Global Warming is not now nor has it ever been caused by CO2. In the research I have done examining 250,000 years of Climate Change, It has ALWAYS been caused by Volcanoes . . . Cold Climate Change. Global Warming is the Natural result in the absence of major eruptions above 6 on the VEI scale. we have not had one since 1912. When the next one comes . . . we will finally learn of the power of Nature and that Nature is the Supreme Ruler of Climate on Planet Earth.

      • October 30, 2021 9:22 pm

Agreed: Natural features and variables basically mediate and control planetary temperature and weather, I.e., the sun, water vapour and cloud formation, influenced by cosmic ray activity, as found and demonstrated by workers in Canada, Denmark and Israel.
CO2 has a very minor impact.
Therefore, all the vast monies and effort are being wasted on CO2.
Like COP26, too much political and financial capital has been lodged in it by Western nations for it to be stopped now, but it is a wildgoose chase.

In contrast, the Eastern nations, responsible for the bulk of greenhouse gases, will, rightly and sensibly, ignore the false scares eliciting the West’s catastrophic responses to imaginary climate dangers.

The false scares’ basis is GIGO.
