Record Snowfall in China

Heavy blizzards in some parts of north-eastern China have brought record snowfall, raising concerns about keeping homes warm in an area hit by power outages earlier this year.

In the capital city of Shenyang, in Liaoning province, average snowfall reached 51cm (20 inches).

This is the highest recorded snowfall since 1905, said state outlet Xinhua.

In neighbouring inner Mongolia, one person died and more than 5,600 were affected after a heavy snowstorm.

Meteorological researchers in the Mongolian city of Tongliao told state outlet the Global Times that the snowstorm was an extremely random and sudden extreme weather event.

A total of 27 red alerts were issued across Inner Mongolia and north-eastern China – the highest warning alert for snowstorms.

Naturally the BBC say it is a “weather event”. If it had been a heatwave, they would have called it a “climate”.

But the real issue which the BBC has not raised is what will happen in future when China stops burning coal, both for power and heating? It may not have occurred to the writer, but much of China gets very, very cold every winter.

Solar panels will be useless when they are covered in snow, and wind turbines will freeze up just as they did in Texas in February.

I think it was the locals who called it a weather event – the BBC was keen to state that, rather than anyone think that they’d agreed with it – dear me no.
“Solar panels will be useless when they are covered in snow, and wind turbines will freeze up just as they did in Texas in February.” All agreed but here’s a question – what happens to heat pumps (generally situated at ground level and featuring large fans only protected from the elements by a grill) in “extreme winter weather events”? What happens to them when snow is blown or sucked in or, come to that at any time of the year – hail, or sand or… or…? Before we fork out £50k (or whatever) to have our houses retrofitted, I think we should be told.

The leaves will probably be the only source of heat available. Can be burnt in all the pizza ovens bought during lockdown giving a nice smoke flavoured warm meal.

Isn’t Global Warming and the magic CO2 molecules wonderful. Hot, cold, rain, drought, wind, still – all down to CO2 and the Climate Emergency/Chaos/Collapse. And no, the Chinese will not give up coal until they have something fully effective to replace it. Possibly nuclear but never, ever solar and wind.

I have actually visited north eastern China in winter to give a lecture in 2007. I flew into Harbin and was then driven at night at very high speeds (in excess of 180 kmh!) in an Audi A6L over ice and snow drift covered roads to Daqing. Temperatures were well below freezing day and night for the whole trip.

Giving the lecture indoors in Daqing I had some trouble with my eyes and throat. This is due to the incredibly high levels of air pollution. Daqing looks like something from a post-apocalypse movie, built as it is on an oil field with nodding donkeys everywhere, in car parks, hotel grounds etc. All with a heavy industry infrastructure built around it.

I won’t mention the food. I don’t want to traumatise myself again.

    Can’t be snow !!
20 years ago ‘Ex-Burt’ David Viner at the UK Climatic research Unit announcing that “children just won’t know what snow is”

So what we are seeing must be ash from the planet that’s on fire !!!

“Meteorological researchers in the Mongolian city of Tongliao told state outlet the Global Times that the snowstorm was an extremely random and sudden extreme weather event.”

So because it’s just weather that makes it ok? Unlike all those hurricanes or tornados and heat waves created by global warming from our CO2?

Meanwhile the Graun uncritically (no comments allowed) reports thew impassioned video plea from the Foreign Minister of Tuvala, “Help, we are sinking” with pictures of him standing knee deep in the sea. They should have done some investigating, Tuvala is expanding, quite rapidly, it’s not sinking between the waves at all, the FM should have said “Help, our islands are expanding. Send money”.

The Guradian routinely repeats utterly shameless falsehoods these days, and anyone who questions they BTL gets deleted. What a joke it has become.

The Grauniad is decent enough to publish only politically correct news while the COP26 in Glasgow winds down.

“Another study related to sea-level rise (Webb and Kench 2010) appears to contradict the general anticipation that the impacts of climate change will eventually make low-lying reef islands unable to support human occupation. It uses aerial and satellite images taken over the past 60 years, a time during which there is evidence that sea levels have risen, to compare the landform dynamics of 27 atoll islands in the central Pacific Ocean. The study found that as a whole, instead of declining, the islands grew in land area by a total of 63 ha or seven percent. The research findings show that although sea level in the central Pacific Ocean rose by about 2.0 mm/yr over the study period and that all 27 islands changed physically during that time, there is considerable variation in the amount and style of change between and among the islands, with an overall net increase in land area; 86 percent of the islands remained relatively stable or their outline or shape increased in size. Twelve of the 27 islands increased in size by more than three percent but only four islands reduced in area by more than three percent.”

    2.0 mm/yr for 60 years… 4.75 inches.

In extreme CAGW zealotry, ‘the cracks’ are beginning to show. They are demonstrating three of the five stages of grieving. First, denial – in spades. Second, Anger – again, in spades. Third, Bargaining. Yes, they are bargaining with the public,. “If you believe in us a little longer we will bring down the price of electric cars, Promise!”

The other two stages are said to be Depression and Acceptance.

I know the Mongolians are a hardy bunch but their statisticians just aren’t trying hard enough to push the climate disaster meme. In the UK, if there’s a sprinkling of a few flakes then they’ll find half a dozen deaths that can be blamed on it.

I don’t know what any person who truly thinks that China really intends to stop burning coal has been smoking but Xi’s actions show little sign of this happening.

China makes solar panels. China gets record snow fall. See? China fighting climate change works!
