Sea Ice Data Tampering At DMI

December 10, 2021

By Paul Homewood

Electroverse have uncovered some blatant data tampering by DMI:

It would appear that the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) may have taken a leaf out of NASA’s ‘data-fudging 101‘.

Sometime between late-Nov and early-Dec this year, the DMI’s Arctic Sea Ice Volume chart experienced a mysterious ‘vanishing’ of ice — this is revealed by a direct comparison of the Nov 18th and the Dec 8th charts below (via a slideshow):

  • image

The DMI have inexplicably brought the entire year’s Arctic Sea Ice data down by more than 2,000 km3 (or 12+%).

Note also that previous years have been revised down, too, but only during the summer melt season.

The averages have not been changed, nor has the scale, only the data points: all have been revised down so as to create a disparity from the 2004-2013 average. I’m struggling, but have no other word for this than ‘fraud’.

I had previously considered the Danish Meteorological Institute to be more trustworthy than their bigger data-tampering brothers NOAA and NASA (I still use their Greenland SMB chart on Electroverse), but I know they’re not strangers to controversy.

Back in the summer of 2019, the DMI reported a “shocking” early-August temperature of between 2.7C (37F) and 4.7C (40.5F) at the Summit weather station, located some 3,202m above sea level at the center of the Greenland ice sheet.

This news quickly spread to every corner of the alarmist web, including CNN and The Guardian; however, just a few days later, the DMI posted a tweet retracting the reading: after a “closer look” (whatever that means) it was revealed that the monitoring equipment had been giving “erroneous results”. Ironically, the DMI went on the admit that heavy snow had caused poor ventilation around the thermometers at the site, wrongly boosting the temperature.

I’ve contacted the DMI for comment re the disappearing ice, though I won’t be holding my breath…

I am able to corroborate their findings. In September I took this screenshot of DMI sea ice thickness. Note that the black line for this year was close to the 2018 line, and above 2017 for Sep 20th:

But the new version shows this year well below those two years:

In addition, there are clearly huge differences between the two maps, with large areas of 3m thick ice in the central area now reduced to 2m thick.

There is no other way to describe this than blatant fraud. The changes do not appear to have been even documented, and the old data is not archived, being simply “replaced”. These should surely be very basic scientific requirements.

Neither does there appear to have been any public announcement by DMI about the fact or the justifications for what amounts to a significant change.

What this episode means is that DMI can no longer be trusted to produce honest, reliable data. It also raises the question of whether similar tampering has been carried out in previous years, without anybody being aware. After all, it is only by pure accident that it has been spotted this time.

Given the amounts of money flying around ‘climate science’, this is indeed fraud.

Meanwhile, the people who should be investigating and perhaps instigating legal proceedings are no longer doing so, as an alarmist playbook suits their own policies.

We’re living through an era of vast media, political, academic and scientific corruption.

Spot on CR – tampering with government data is a criminal offence in the USA I believe, but they know that it will be ignored by the Deep State, which was why some were crapping themselves when Trump was elected. The 4 year cahse to prosecute was all about keeping him busy. He did support the red team/blue team idea which might have been a start BUT …………

The only way that the scam can be kept going is to not let people know the truth about it .
So changing the figures for sea ice is part of their lies .
I have been watching the CO2 monitoring figures to see if they will be changed because they prove that the world wide lockdown had no effect on atmospheric totals .
Also the temperature records , ,[ which show the last 5 years have been below normal temp , ] will probably be ” adjusted ” at some time .

I have also hoped that at some time there would be some mention of the fact that the total CO2 emissions of the UK were only 1 part in 10 million parts of atmosphere , [ or 0.000012% ]. But that is just dreaming as the Greens & media would never do it as more people would realise how the whole Global Warming thing is lies .

Beneath their graph for sea ice volume are arrows one can activate in order to view the graph back in time. Prior to 12th November one sees the old calculation, from the 13th the new one. Although the se ice extent is also supposedly re-calculated using the new formula, it is (from memory) unchanged an still shows present extent close to the average. Odd.

There appear to be a lot more changes than those mentioned, notably:
Data for 2017 has been shifted upwards during spring to match 2019
Data for 2020 during winter has been shifted downwards to well below 2019
More worryingly the reference data appears to be shifted upwards in August and September.

Thank you Cap Allon (Electroverse) for bringing this to our attention.

As far as DMI are concerned it does raise the question you have stated Paul of how much past data we can believe. As Cap says this is not the first time they have had some controversy, but one did feel that they were one of the more honest outfits – disappointing.

Any Met guy knows that data needs to be “cleaned” and sometimes adjusted – BUT why is it always in the one direction of sea ice down, temps up – except of course for 90 years ago when it was obviously reported as too warm so we need to cool that.

The most amazing “adjustment” from the Arctic 90 years ago was when +5 C. was just made -5 C. even though it would have been read in deg F. at the time.

DMI has joined the Australian BoM and the US NOAAA , the UK Met Office as an organization that can no longer be trusted, sadly. I had wondered before as their sea ice extent maps have long shown substantially less ice than the maps from some US Universities.

I once had a fairly long relationship with a woman who was a legal immigrant to Canada. She told me that she picked Vancouver because it was very close to White Rock which her searches had shown had the least amount of snow of anywhere in Canada that year.

I had to laugh because I remembered reading about the White Rock weather reporting instrument that year. The fairly severe cold snap (by local standards) had rendered the instrument inoperative. The snow and ice made it impossible for vehicles to make it up the hill to fix it. So it showed zero snow for White Rock despite it being a record year for the entire region.

Even with good intentions data can be misleading sometimes. Good intentions are in short supply in the climate alarmism industry.

Meanwhile the sun remains very quiet so far this month. If we are indeed in the beginnings of the Eddy Minimum, all this stuff will eventually fall by the wayside as the truth becomes crystal clear to the man in the street. The woman in the street will take longer to grasp it as they are generally firm believers in my experience, even the older ones.

In other news I note that China, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, all of South America clearly don’t believe the global warming mantra, and most never have. It’s just a European and North American fantasy with which they are destroying themselves. Australia and New Zealand are along for the ride, proving they are just as good at destroying themselves as anyone else, so there.

“If we are indeed in the beginnings of the Eddy Minimum, all this stuff will eventually fall by the wayside”

They have the fix already in:

The Social Simulation of the Public Perception of Weather Events and their Effect upon the Development of Belief in Anthropogenic Climate Change Dennis Bray and Simon Shackley, September 2004. Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.

“To endorse policy change people must ‘believe’ that global warming will become a reality some time in the future.

Only the experience of positive temperature anomalies will be registered as indication of change if the issue is framed as global warming.

Both positive and negative temperature anomalies will be registered in experience as indication of change if the issue is framed as climate change.

We propose that in those countries where climate change has become the predominant popular term for the phenomenon, unseasonably cold temperatures, for example, are also interpreted to reflect climate change/global warming.”

It is rather telling that these “adjustments” were made just a few days ago when the 2021 ice volume crossed the average line and appeared as above average. Lo and behold within days the large downwards adjustment occurred. Tony Hellers site documents this well and I personally certainly recall following the rise of the ice level and then the sudden reduction. Science eh ?

They can change the volume as that is based on modelling but they cannot change the extent, as there are two separate measures of extent, both of which use the old eyeball Mark I. Terribly difficult to introduce a new improved version of those series, since superb photographs from satellites have been around since the very beginning of the space age.

The DMI blandly calls it “…new graphics…” which in my book should mean, the same data presented in a slightly different format. Actually, they also talk about a new model; which would be fair enough if they gave full information as to why their old model was shit and why we should believe that the new one is objectively better. (Improved code, they explain. Forsooth!) Instead, they use childishly unscientific language like ‘greatly improved.’

Of course, they really, truly, believe that if changes make an historical series more consistent with violent global warming that is ipso facto proof that they are now on a better system.

All of this is merely annoying. Not even very concerning as a propaganda effort. The most recent part of the graph shows that this season’s volume of sea-ice is running 30% above the same date last year. We know that the CAGW ‘news’ is now based entirely on immediate ‘shock horror’ stories. In other words, the blind believers are already so sensitized that a bit of historical jiggery-pokery is irrelevant to their psychology.

It is somewhat reminiscent of the futile messing about in 2015 by SILSO with historic sunspot numbers. It gave the ‘experts’ a few more years of making idiotic predictions while Nature did her thing. The sun is spotless, incidentally. Not even a ‘speck’ today to call a sunspot group [sic].

I don’t want to appear as a conspiracy theorist but that’s interesting,
I watch the DMI Greenland Surface conditions page almost every day. I like to track the “melting” Greenland ice. Also I look at the PROMICE Weather Station data. At the start of December there were three or four days when none of the PROMICE stations had No Data. This included central Greenland which had shown well into the minus 40s the day before the data went AWOL.
There are times when one or two stations drop out for a day or two but all is highly unusual.

I also noticed the DMI Sea Ice Thickness map showed a major change along the Greenland east coast a couple of days ago which I put down to a change in the winds

2004-2013 mean curve and error range have also changed dramatically between the two Electroverse examples. In the 08-Dec version the mean curve minima is higher in summer, and reaches its minima in September rather than in August, as it does in the 18-Nov version. The error range is also significantly larger in the 08-Dec version.

However, before calling “fraud” I believe one should first apply Hanlon’s razor. Programming/web cockup?

    • ThinkingScientist permalink

Addendum – climate4you shows a screen grab on 02-Dec-21 and 02-Dec-20. Both show the lower mean curves like the 18-Nov-21 Electroverse plot ie before the change. Scrolling through the DMI plots back to the start, the entire set of displays show the new version of the mean and the new larger error bars.

So something fundamental is changed in the processing and/or chart display on their web display. As I said already though – Hanlon’s Razor first.

It was interesting because it was in advance of years that had much more ice in Hudson Bay so there was scope for some big advances to come. Due to the winds and hoarding of cold in the Arctic it was obvious why the ice had grown so fast. For the first time I’ve seen at this time of year Alaska was very cold, meaning that the sea in that area filled with ice fast. The site stopped updating after Friday 4th I think.

This is the work of the government “Nudge Unit”, which seeks to influence public opinion by subtle (or no-so-subtle) implantation of chosen “facts”. When you are aware that this is going on, you begin to see it when it appears; this will help to resist the “nudging”, which will then eventually force them to resort to “shoving”. When that happens, others will begin to wake up.

For what it’s worth, the DMI explanation is on their website as follows:

    New graphics December 7, 2021

We have improved the DMI operational ocean and sea-ice model HYCOM-CICE with higher horizontal resolution and updated HYCOM and CICE code. In particular, the sea ice code has been greatly improved with meltponds, sea-ice salinity, improved thermodynamics and much more. The freshwater discharge from Greenland has also been greatly improved using freshwater product from GEUS, which especially improves the coastal ocean currents and thus the ice transport nearshore Greenland. The model has been running continuously since September 1990. Therefore, we have by December 07, 2021 updated the graphics of sea-ice thickness and volume using the new and improved data on Polarportal and

The improved model setup has led to higher variability as well as less adrupt melting during the melt season, which gives a shift of approximately half a month for the time of minimum ice volume. The trend between the years is almost unchanged. Thereby, a year with a large sea-ice volume in the old setup also has a large volume in the new setup, and similar for years with low sea-ice volume.

However, the final sentence seems to be untrue for 2021 …

Paul, I’ve not read all the comments. The allegation is that the Danes have cooked the 2021 data. Jan 1 in 2021 was 17 on 18 Nov. This became 15 on 8 Dec. The way to test / expose the allegation is to merge the equivalent 2020 graph with the 2021 graph. If the data have been cooked then there will be an offset between these two data vintages. The alternative is that some rolling data adjustment algorithm brings them in line – still not proper science but a stage removed from cooking the data. Maybe this adjustment happens every year? But in a world where the adjustment bureau rules, we can have no certainty.

Hi Paul, I spent some time today looking for the graph I suggested and could not find it anywhere. And then I realised it was staring me in the face in the 8 Dec 2021 graph that you posted that has the 2020 data on it. This shows that at close of 2020 (duck egg green) the sea ice volume was just below 15,000 km^3. And so it is clear that 2021 should begin close to this value – mission accomplished.

The problem here is that the sea ice volume chart is model driven. This demonstrates the on-going problem of unreliable models. We have to assume that on Jan 1 2021, the data are recalibrated to real measurements and then have to be massaged throughout the year to converge on the model fiction.

The consolation is that cheating is a sure tell (in the poker sense) of a weakling and a liar.
In fact, I recall a professional gambler stating that he loved it when people cheated. He relaxed, knowing that at some point in the game he would wipe them out.

Paul, O/T, but here’s more proof they really do want us to be poorer, colder, less mobile, less free..

Do note also, the previous winter’s average has been revised upwards, along with previous years’ figures, while the 2021 figures are revised significantly downwards. How odd.

      “…how odd…”

And again…how pointless. Such petty fiddling of the books is a waste of effort.

When the receivers in bankruptcy come round to a business, they are not interested in the over-optimistic set of accounts manufactured a few months earlier.

As regards satellite measurements of global temperatures, RSS and UAH agree that the world cooled* 0.3 C in November.

I have mentioned SILSO’s data manipulation in 2015. But SILSO are far more honest than DMI. The SILSO site, even now, has a prominent notice of the major change.

      * I gave up pointing out that all this was virtually meaningless, twenty years ago. If the
CAGW maniacs enjoyed the ride when these metrics were going up, let them vomit during
      the free-fall.

A strange change also from January to July.

Kentucky tornadoes ‘worst in history’ – inevitably!

Kentucky does not normally have a great number of tornado related deaths a year, but random stuff happens, did they blame AGW in 1974 like they will no doubt try here?

And of course such things are entirely random – if a tornado chances on a particularly new and vulnerable type of building with a lot of people inside – like an Amazon warehouse – then the result will obviously be exceptionally bad.
