BBC’s Fake Climate Check

December 24, 2021

By Paul Homewood

The BBC is finishing the year with another fake climate check, summarising 2021:

The introduction on the website tells us all we need to know. The video has nothing to do with “fact”, but is nothing more than climate propaganda.

It covers the following events, which I have covered individually during the year:

  • Canada heatwave
  • British Columbia floods
  • Floods in China, India & Australia
  • Hurricane Ida
  • Floods in Germany
  • Wildfires in Greece
  • Drought in East Africa

There is the usual nonsense about global warming making all of these worse. But there is no data provided to show that any of these events are remotely unprecedented, or that they are part of a worsening trend.

Indeed, you could come up with a similar number of “remarkable events” for pretty much every year on record.

In Greece, for instance, there have been many years with similarly severe wildfires, and double last summer’s burn occurred in 2007.

A few months ago, I wrote a summary of the world’s extreme weather fifty years ago in 1971:

It’s worth re-reading, but here’s just a few of the long list of remarkable weather events that year:

  • Sahel drought
  • Drought in India & China
  • Drought in Texas and Florida
  • Devastating wildfires in the US
  • 100,000 dead in N Vietnam floods
  • Major floods in Australia
  • Orissa Cyclone
  • Major floods in the US
  • Tropical Storm Doria
  • Hurricane Edith, a Cat 5 that hit Nicaragua
  • Montreal’s “Snowstorm of the Century”
  • Giant blizzards in Texas

Any one of these could have legitimately slotted into this year’s Climate Check.

I have now also delved back into the Archives for 1961, and will post it up in a day or so. I promise you that year was every bit as extreme as this!

Mea Culpa!

There is a brief footnote to Ben Rich’s video, where he talks about the Madagascan drought this year, but almost apologetically admits that scientists now say that this was not connected to climate change.

As we know, there have been several similar droughts in the past, so it did not take a genius to work this out.

Given that exactly the same applies to the rest of his list, maybe we can expect a similar apology next month?

Political Propaganda or Fact?

Ben Rich makes the purpose of his video abundantly clear with this closing statement:

“2021 has brought into sharp focus the impact that severe weather is having on peoples around the world.

Limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5C was at the top of the agenda at COP26 in Glasgow, with scientists urging world leaders to commit to cutting GHGs, to stave off a climate catastrophe”

This is how I see our current Media obsession with “The Big Green Propaganda Machine” . . .

For thirty years I have started every day with my coffee and two papers, one regional and one national. At no time have I ever found reporting to be one sided or excessively slanted. The only time that the media in focuses solely on one side of any subject is where it is a clearly an outrageous aberration of societal morae’s in our liberal, democratic society. Rape, murder, child molestation or any other obvious criminal or social outrage will receive full, one sided, unrepentant dissent, as is due. One topic however falls from that contract of balance within the entire spectrum of media reporting . . . Environmentalism. In-depth investigative reporting, it seems, has no place examining the facts presented by “Our Friends” in the Environmental movement. Frankly, why should we, the movement is working towards making our world cleaner and healthier for us all. Given!

Within all this goodness, however, is a soft underbelly of mistruths without substance and outright mythology that have become common ‘knowledge and or fact’ repeated endlessly without the slightest contextual review. It is almost as though these good people and their ethical movement are beyond reproach or clinical review. It is a form of secularism almost religious in nature. Challenging statements or facts presented by members of the environmental movement would be akin to saying that someone’s God does not exist.

Where are the under-cover stories of “Environmental Charities” ripping off unsuspecting citizens? Has the planet ever been this warm before? Yes – twice in just the last 2000 years, the Roman Warming Period and the Middle Ages Warming Period – it was 2.5 degrees warmer than present. When was the last time that the glaciers of the world receded this far in the Rockies or the Andes or Greenland? Again twice. Why is it so hard to show that if you add up all the glaciers in the world outside of Antarctica and Greenland, they represent only 2% of Total Global Glaciation? Globally meaningless, yet probed with zeal. When the glaciers melted 700 years ago were major cities like London, Venice or Barcelona under 20 feet of water? Why not? How is it possible that we are in “an unprecedented period of Global Warming” when 60-foot birch trees and barley used to grow 700 years ago in Southern Greenland? . . . Today . . . this would be impossible!

These are simple questions to ask and the answers are complex but clear. Should it not be the role of our enlightened media to dig into these questions, in search for the truth? Are we so enthralled with the concept of being a part of saving the World that we brush over the fact that the radiation emitted from the tailings pond created while making the magnets for wind turbines in China, the ‘radiation-glow’ can be seen from space at night? There are over 800 lbs. of Rare Earth Magnets in every wind turbine. Are electric cars so important to the environmental movement’s credibility that the mainstream media refuses to show that from a purely clinical, scientific and analytical perspective it probably would be less harmful environmentally to put that electric car in the back of a Hummer and drive it around? Why is it so difficult for our media, who most of us would consider our best and our brightest, to challenge the status quo of mainstream Environmentalism?

I do NOT ask that we return to the bad old days of unrepentant hyper polluting, but please, become Global in your perspective, show respect for verifiable facts and at least occasionally review the voice of reason from those who challenge the questionable “Facts” of the Environmental Movement. A little review is long overdue.

Thank you for considering my perspective

You have got to remember that the BBC have experts in this area. Almost all have excellent qualifications In English Literature and or English language. As investigative journalism is no longer required only Googling is necessary to check facts when it comes to climate change and a number of other issues for which Google has agendas. Sadly, the main cheerleader for AGW in the BBC, Roger Harrabin, has announced that he will be leaving the BBC in June 2022 to grasp opportunities in the post COP26 world. I can think of many such opportunities based on needs I have identified. For example as Roger is from Coventry, birthplace of the Motor Car in Britain perhaps he can start an import export business in first hand electric cars (no market of course for second hand electric cars). Or maybe he will start a charity to help reduce the number of people dying of hypothermia in winter which of course will be an increasing problem. Actually there are too many opportunities to mention here. Good luck to Roger. It is good to see that he has left many able people in the BBC ready to take up his mantle.

One of the most powerful tools humans have from which to learn is observation, in context. Galileo, the Father of Modern Science, gave humanity this lesson in spades. May I adopt a pedantic but accurate verbal definition?

You refer to “climate deniers” . There is none!

What we deny, surely, are “climate crisis” and the like, and also (significant) AGW.

The term ‘Climate Deniers’ is a propagandist term that denigrates those of us who have studied History and Science beyond the simplistic annunciations of ‘The Big Green Propaganda Machine. I for one am NOT a climate denier . . . Climate Change IS happening but I have studied and learned that it is a Natural Process brought upon the Earth by Nature today as it has 17 times in the last 10,000 years. 8 times the climate, Globally, has cooled and 9 times it has warmed, Globally, during the Holocene. ALL of these Warming and Cooling with one (1) exception have occurred while CO2 was stable at 280 ppm . . . Except one (1) the modern warming period . . . today we are at 400 PPM.

How is it possible that when 96.5% of changing climate is NOT influenced or led by CO2 that somehow now, with 3.5% of History, it is ‘Magically’ caused by CO2. Not Possible ! Climate Change is happening . . . but it is a Natural process ! Is pollution bad ? YES ! But we need to clean up what is attached to CO2 when we burn Fossil Fuels for energy ! We can remove 95% of the solid and foul gases from Coal Fired Power plants if we spend the money to do so, as was done at Belldune New Brunswick Canada. Pages 6 & 7 . . .

‘The Big Green Propaganda Machine’ does NOT advocate a clean up . . . It advocates ‘Destroying the Enemy’ . . . Big Oil. For them this is a War . . . for the thinking person it is about Science, History and verifiable fact. Human input to CO2 annually is 3% of the total. Nature inputs 97% of Co2 Annually ( from IPCC data). the Paris Accord and COP26 and all the other Global pacts want to reduce Human input by 20% . . . That is 0.6% ! Madness ! You could no more alter the progress of Natural Climate Change by reducing CO2 by 0.6% than setting off an Atomic Bomb would alter the Earth’s path around the Sun . . . FACT !

Time to give our collective heads a shake and deal with Pollution where it counts. Clean up industrial Infrastructure . . . Electric Power Plants, Oil Refineries and Global Shipping . . . THIS is where Pollution comes from . . . We have the technology lets USE that technology to clean up the Earth ! Propaganda declaring CO2 as the cause of Climate Change is ‘FALSE’ ! But it has grasped the Public attention through Media, Politics and the simple minds of Environmentalists the world over.

        Carbon Dioxide, Co2, Carbon . . . is 0.04 % . . . 4/10ths of One% of the Atmosphere.

CO2 IS the Gift of Life on Planet Earth, has been for 4 Billion Years . . . NOT the scourge as described by ‘The Big Green Propaganda Machine’

Do Not call me a Denier . . . Common Sense, Science and History rule my World . . .

      • December 26, 2021 2:04 pm

Prof Gerald Ratzer , Canada and colleagues are reporting that (manmade) CO2 can be exonerated as the main influence on planetary temperature.
The sun, cosmic rays and water vapour are the main controllers of our climate.
Therefore, decarbonisation is the wrong reaction though clean up of pollution is essential.

jiml: In your listing of polluters (with which I am not applying agreement) you don’t mention petrochemicals. Waste plastic is the single biggest threat to the well-being of the planet. A couple of years ago Saudi Arabia commissioned the largest and most integrated petrochemicals (plastics) facility ever conceived. Egypt is about to do the same. Where do these mountains of plastic end? In the oceans. Where are the protests? None – these issues are too big to get their brais (what few they have) around them.

There are several sources of the same thing – please see here:

Despite the veracity of the BBC statement about getting “climate change coverage wrong too often”, they have also were reported as follows, again from the Guardian – not an organ I read ever:

An original BBC report can be found here:

I recall Tim Davie attended a conference in 2009 at which it was decided that the stance “science is settled” is justification for abandoning the Charter obligation (?) for balanced coverage.

        Mr. Vernon E,

Little story . . . I live in Vancouver BC. 5 years ago I visited the west coast of the Baja peninsula in Mexico for a 2 week rest. I walked along the beach 1 – 2 km’s every day. Lots of stuff washed ashore. Nets, tree stumps a little garbage, but nothing much just what you would expect along any beach.

When I landed home the Media was reporting a clean up of beaches on the West Coast of Vancouver Island . . . 5 Tons of garbage had been collected . . . ‘mostly Plastic’ . . .

How is it possible that 2 West facing beaches to the Pacific Ocean would be SOOO different?

Dumping at sea is the answer ! Ship’s Captains must pay $250 per ton to remove garbage . . . So . . . they wait until they get to the 200 mile limit . . . and over it goes . . .

Vancouver is the second busiest port on the West Coast of North America . . . All the Garbage that washed ashore . . . is from DUMPING at sea . . .

Solution . . . Require ALL ports in the G-20 to remove garbage BEFORE freight is off loaded.

        At . . . NO CHARGE to the shipper ! Freight rates will go up . . . yes . . . but dumping at sea will STOP . . . .

I believe this represents about 80% of the Garbage at sea . . .

What do you think of that as a solution?

  14. Vernon E permalink

Every little helps but the only long term solution is to stop producing so much plastic and depend more upon advanced recycling technology.

I concur . . . to a point. But the plastic at the Ocean Gyers is ALL from dumping at sea. Your garbage and mine is dealt with on land and is either recycled or interred. The solution for plastic in the oceans is collecting garbage from ships at NO COST to THEM before they are permitted to off load.

Ship’s Captains are paid a percentage of operating costs . . . the lower their expenses . . . The more they earn . . . remove the incentive to dump at sea . . . you eliminate the dumping. Funny how solutions are almost never part of pointing at problems . . .

My provincial liquor store stopped using plastic bags . . . instead they use paper bags . . . 40% of those ‘Recycled Bags’ comes from ‘Virgin Wood’ . . . you must cut down trees for that. CO2 they say is leading to Climate Change . . . sooo cut down more trees . . . the ONLY long term storage place for CO2 . . . Hmm . . . such a brilliant solution . . . NOT !!

The ethylene from which plastic bags are produced is a by-product of processing Natural Gas . . . if you don’t convert that into plastic . . . You gotta burn it . . . funny bout that . . . how knew ?

The environmental movement is all about screaming about problems . . . NEVER about solutions . . .

Most plastics have been round for less than 100 years. For example nylon 66 was only discovered by Carothers in the 1930s. In the not too distant future my guess is that bacteria will find plastics good to eat. In the meantime nations with no proper refuse collection and disposal systems will continue to dump stuff in rivers and hence the sea. Most plastics cannot be recycled as the same material because of gelling. Whilst there are some useful products that can be made from plastic residues, probably the best things to do are recovery of liquids, gases and chars via pyrolysis and or incineration with appropriate clean up of effluents and use of the heat generated in various ways.
