Met Office Hype New Year’s Day “Record Temperature”

There is some absurd hype over this:

The UK is having the warmest New Year’s Day on record, with new high temperatures set for the second day in a row, the Met Office says.

St James’s Park in central London saw temperatures of 16.3C (61.3F) on Saturday as 2022 was ushered in.

Warm air from the Azores has been reaching the UK in recent days, bringing unusually mild weather.

The previous New Year’s Day record was set in 1916, when it reached 15.6C (60.1F) in Bude, Cornwall.

Overnight on Friday, it reached 16.5C in Bala, Gwynedd, north Wales, making it the hottest New Year’s Eve on record.

This article even includes an “Analysis” by Roger Harrabin, confidently telling us that we can expect many more extremes as the planet continues to heat.

It does not appear to have occurred to the BBC/Met Office that these are just two days, which have no extra climatic significance just because they are New Year’s Day & Eve.

Certainly these temperatures are not exceptional. The UK records for December and January are 18.7C and 18.3C respectively.

If we look at CET, New Year’s Eve measured 14.0C. Since 1950, there have been thirteen other days which hit 14C or more during December and January., fairly well spread out.

In other words, this is simply the sort of weather that we can expect to get every few years.

OH, PS . . . I live on the west coast of Canada . . . kinda like England this time of year . . . We just had a BAD cold front . . . it is now tracking east . . . about 1 week from now you will wish it were New Years Day . . . we got -16 with strong winds and power outages . . . you will be getting this pretty soon !

That’s why the intellectual giant that is Harebrain was called in to analyse this amazing record

St James Park in central London. No UHI effect there then!

We had near record temperature here, so Gamecock PLAYED GOLF.

    Not sorry.

Cirrusly, they get a GREAT DAY, and all they can do is whine. It’s a mental disease.

I thought they were using Cambridge botanical gardens as the weather standard for the UK?

    • January 2, 2022 2:14 pm

Sometimes they use Gravesend or Faversham, as they are also hotspots. The BBC also likes Heathrow Airport.

Oddly since Heathrow got considerably less busy it’s hasn’t been setting any temperature records….

Is that a big gap in the record when we were supposed to be experiencing Global Cooling?!

  7. January 2, 2022 3:28 pm

It is certainly pleasantly warm weather, confirming the “optimum” status of the climate today.

Note that many of those previous warm December days will have been early in the month, from late autumns.

Was it really the warmest DAY, or the warmest minute of what could have been a very cold day?

I would be surprised if the original 1916 record was anything other than 60F. I do not think it likely to have been measured or recorded to one decimal place.

The purpose of the hype was to mislead the public into thinking that such temperatures are unprecedented at this time of year. As Paul demonstrates, this is not the case.

The BBC frequently broadcasts climate alarmism in breach of its obligation to inform without bias. It is of more concern that the Met Office now has a lengthy track record of claiming dubious temperature records. One would expect that as a publicly funded scientific institution, the Met Office would be an unbiased, objective and honest source of information. Yet each time an opportunity presents itself, the Met Office seems to use spin and deception to push the global warming message. When a scientific body loses integrity and credibility it becomes a waste of public money. Of course, the same is true for a the National Broadcaster.

These days “publicly funded” means you parrot whatever is perceived to be the official left wing narrative; usually in direct contradiction to all the available evidence. As long as you do this you can also ignore the views of the taxpayers who’s money is wasted by you

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) was established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and later, it was endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly. Membership is open to all members of the WMO and the UN.

    Isn’t that interesting . . . The World Meteorological Organization Helped found The IPCC . . .

The British Met Office has been a leader in ALL of this . . . Interesting . . .

    Can’t bugger your friends eh ?? . . . That would be unseemly !! On and on it goes . . .

Here in Australia, Perth (WA capital) had its hottest Christmas Day on record.
But Darwin (NT capital) had its coldest day.
    Balanced weather.

  14. January 2, 2022 10:56 pm

These records are back to 1951. Before then ? Mid-1930’s were warm ???? Late 1800’s too ?

  15. January 3, 2022 7:55 am

Why do we now have to use the word ‘heat’ instead of warm? It’s not exactly heating.

St James Park is in central London and is therefore bound to be warmer than the average across the whole country. I do wish that those reporting on weather would state where the temperature are measured and off us the average countryside temperatures instead of urban ones.

Does Paul Homewood describe himself as a climate sceptic/denier? As a seeker after truth that may change in the light of fresh evidence? When the facts change, I change?
For me, that is important, if someone could please enlighten me. Thanks!

    • January 3, 2022 9:05 pm

I don’t describe myself as anything.

      I simply follow the data

      • January 3, 2022 10:10 pm

Thanks for these two replies. Have either of you changed your lifestyles towards lower greenhouse gas emitting behaviour, ie cutting your energy bills in house and car? Minimising travel unless it is by walking or cycling or horse riding? Eating a more plant-based diet? Tim Weller

What possible business of yours is that Mr Weller. The total fantasy that is AGW has nothing to do with an individual’s lifestyle. Unless, of course, you are looking to wave the virtue signallling “you’re a hypocrite” banner?

      • January 4, 2022 12:26 pm

Attempting to leave a healthier and more habitable planet is the aim of everyone except our anonymous, dear, devon blue-eyed stunner, evidently. He can also reduce his hypocrisy quotient by joining me in this – from my family WhatsApp group:

How to be a good ancestor in 2022 – first of 12:
Tip for January 2022. And, for me, to reduce my hypocrisy quotient by driving less:

2019: 14,000 miles driven in the car for nearly all medium to long journeys with six hillwalking trips to Scotland.

Climate emergency declared by national and regional governments. In Nov 2019, I declared a 50% cut on my 2019 total in my car mileage for 2020 and thereafter. Summer: over 80 mpg. Winter: over 70 mpg.

2020: 6,300 miles with two trips to Scotland

2021: 5,500 miles with two trips to Scotland.

      • January 4, 2022 12:34 pm

        What climate emergency?

You do realise that people around the world are much healthier and far better off in all sorts of ways than they have ever been. Still, carry on virtue signalling, while the rest of the world gets on with developing their economies.

      • January 4, 2022 12:41 pm

Wow, you and your family WhatsApp group must be so very proud of your big VS banner, Carry on waving 🤣🤣

      Mr. Weller,

You have come to an honest place where the BS is left at the door ! Many do not believe that climate change is happening at all . . . they are in denial. The rest of us Know that Climate Change is a continuous and evolving reality of life on Planet Earth.

Today in what is described as ‘An Inter Glacial Period’, The Holocene, we are having a reprieve from the incessant Cold Violence brought upon the World by massive Volcanoes. Planet Earth is warm for only the second time in 250 thousand years, the last was The Eemian 150,000 years ago. This Warming Period permits Food Production in the Prairies, Europe and China. Places where 10 kilometers of Ice would usually stand. For little more than 10 thousand years Humanity has had it good. Life for 7 billion people is possible. A mere 25 million souls occupied Equatorial regions of the Earth when Volcanoes and Ice Ruled the World during the Last Ice Age. Let us learn to give thanks to Global Warming and learn to respect Nature as the Supreme Ruler of our Climate and of true Climate Change on our Little Blue Planet.

There have been 18 minor periods of Warming and Cooling in this ‘Interglacial Period’. None have followed CO2 either during Warming Periods or during Cooling Periods. Why then today, Magically, is CO2 the the driving influencer of Global Warming ? Environmentalists have accumulated ‘correlated’ events that ‘Fit the Timelines’ of Nature’s evolving cycles, but they are Not scientifically linked when History is reviewed. These may shed some light . . .

I hope you become a leader among us seeking the facts and truth in all things . . .

    From the article:

“The previous New Year’s Day record was set in 1916…”

If there is so much “heating” going on it seems rather surprising that it has taken over 100 years to break the record.

Alternatively, if it was just the general variance expected of “weather” then 100 years to set a new record seems plausible.
