BBC Publicise Potty Gaia’s New Book

November 23, 2022

By Paul Homewood

What on earth is the BBC doing giving space to this load of drivel?

It is written by somebody called Gaia Vince, who apparently has a book to sell!

According to her website:

My latest book, NOMAD CENTURY, is an urgent investigation of the most underreported, seismic consequence of climate change: how it will force us to change where – and how – we live. It is a book of solutions and also a rousing call to arms, describing how we can plan for and manage the now unavoidable climate migration while we restore the planet to a fully habitable state.

I would not recommend reading the BBC piece, never mind buying the book, if you want to remain sane. Needless to say it is full of statements like:

“Without action, hundreds of millions people will have to leave their homes by 2050, according some estimates. One study from 2020 predicts that by 2070, depending on scenarios of population growth and warming, "one to three billion people are projected to be left outside the climate conditions that have served humanity well over the past 6,000 years".

Sh is of course entitled to her views, no matter how crazy. But if the BBC are prepared to give her the opportunity to air them, why don’t they do the same for everybody else with different views?

Well actually, a bit further ahead, a new ice age WILL start, so maybe we could make some long term plans for that. That WILL need thinking about.

That’s worth betting on. Alvarez & Alvarez pulled the curtain back on bolide impacts in… 1982? Even the Libertarian party is an ancient relic compared to human understanding of what actually killed T Rex. There are more bolides out there than anonymous scientist-impersonators peddling cooked “data.”

Bolides are atmospheric entry cosmic objects – not ” out
there ” in space. The Comet Research Group and the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis researchers have superseded the Alvarez team …..There is now evidence of numerous Holocene cosmic impacts and climatic downturns 3650 years ago a Tunguska class bolide exploded over the Jordan Valley – a destructive event that probably gave rise to the legend of Sodom and Gomorrah …. Ken Tankersely and his colleagues have also uncovered compelling evidence for a meteor airburst over the Ohio River Valley circa 350 AD that wiped out the Hopewell culture ….Both of these bolide disasters coincide with temperature troughs in the Greenland ice core time series and eras of cultural trauma and civilizational interregnums in the Mediterranean

Precisely, its started already. To escape Global Cooling over 100,000 Brits have migrated to Spain and Italy to escape the cold. My dad fled the encroaching cold in NZ for the warmth of Brisbane Aus. The great climate migration to warmer climes started decades ago!

Splendid. I recommend she(?) go and live in a cave on Svalbard. She will be safe from Global Warming there, and dodging the ‘starving’ polar bears there will tone up her fitness (physical anyway, I doubt there is much else that can be improved).
And would someone tell her(?) that the next COP is 11.5 months away and hysteria should be reserved for the 2 months before that.

The Wiki entry about her is interesting. Certainly a busy bee. I suspect she may be right about “one to three billion people are projected to be left outside the climate conditions that have served humanity well over the past 6,000 years”, but that it will be due to the big freeze as we leave this mild interglacial, possibly quite soon now, judging by the length of the last ones.

Oh you have dodged something alright ..The Little Ice Age was the coldest period of the Holocene and had nothing to do with orbital wobbling cycles ….Nor the Late Antiquity Little Ice Age or the Younger Dryas millennial glaciation ..Milankovitchs antiquated hypothesis cannot explain the ‘flickering’ observable in the late Pleistocene epoch temperature reconstructions…….As I remarked a few days ago here , 14700 years ago Greenland ice cores show temperatures escalated by 10C in just 3-4 years and 11700 years before present the warming was in the order of another 10C within 50 – 60 years ..Lt General Nugee and the UK Ministry of Defence are fashionably fretting about another 1.5 C upsurge in temperature following a mere 1C rise over 170 years as if this modest temperature resurgence was some ‘climate emergency “…..Good lord the Arctic ocean may become navigable again as it was 7000 years ago when atmospheric CO2 was 270 – 280 ppm ..

Why does the BBC air her views? Because they are a propaganda outfit and are only interested in opinions that conform to the climate emergency/catastrophe/breakdown narrative. They are not interested in facts or any discussion of alternative views. Oh, and don’t you just love that wonderful justification “according to some estimates” . Given the number of pseudo climate scientists, I guess you can find an estimate for anything however outlandish e.g. climate change affecting slavery.

    • November 23, 2022 1:19 pm

Here’s one estimate — ‘Large parts of Europe are warming twice as fast as the planet on average’
      NOVEMBER 22, 2022

Does the tune sound familiar? At least there must be areas warming half as fast for the ‘victims’ to move to if/when things become unbearable 🙄

I got that sum wrong last time – if they are warming twice as fast then equal areas must be not warming at all.

Say average warming is one degree. Half the world is warming at two degrees. Thus the other half must be warming at zero degrees. 0.5×2+0.5×0=1

She’s obviously related in some way to Lady Nugee’s brother-in-law – Lt Gen Nugee – who is claiming (in DT) that CC will bring new challenges for our RN ships as the seas warm. Of course, it had to be an Army man to claim that the RN, which sails ships all over the world, from Arctic waters to tropical seas, will not be able to cope with a couple of degrees change – if it ever happened – in sea temps.

    • GeoffB permalink
      November 23, 2022 12:05 pm

I just read the Nugee article, what a twat, how do Navy ships operate now in warmer tropical waters? If it is a problem than you just add in more cooling stages, their is an infinite amount of cooling water available, of course this risks heating the oceans even more and will cause irreparable damage to the eco system (fish, krill and plankton etc) so the green loons will be up in arms. He also seems to confuse tidal range with sea level rise!

Have you read this Geoff B , Harry Passfield ?….It turns out Lady Nugee graced a Westminster North Labor Party fundraising swahree – a ‘ champagne reception with canapes ”
no less – in support of Corbyn Labor As I recall Jeremy Corbyn – the ardent ” friend” of Islamist terrorists called for the abolition of the British Army and the disbanding of NATO . I wonder how that went down with climate evangelist Lt General Richard Nugee who virtue signaled he had abjured 80% of meat intake from his diet ..Now I’m sure Lt Gen Nugee never cast a vote for Jezza but is he still fond of indulging champagne and meatless canapes like Lady Nugee and Labors elites ?… Whats on the menu for the MoD gay coffee mornings ?.

Nugee may wish to brush up on his miltary and maritime history … From navigators journals and monastic chronicles and an assortment of proxy records it is known the Atlantic seas during the Medieval Warm Period were not as stormy and clogged with sea ice which made long distance ocean journeys less hazardous . Similar conditions seem to be Globally cyclonic frequency is at the lowest ebb in the 40 year time series since 1987 and 1981 so the only jeremiad he has is the concern warmer oceans may disrupt naval warship engines ?

Speaking as a naval person with 40 years service, that army officer is quite right. If the ocean gets just a bit too warm it affects the floatability of a warship and it tends to sink.

The Royal Society launched Gaia Vince in 2015, when she won its once prestigious Science Book Prize, with her eco-travel-and-hand-wringing-concern book “Adventures in the Anthropocene”.

This is the prize that was won by real scientists such as Roger Penrose and Stephen Jay Gould when it started in the 1980s. Now it tends to be won by books about woke-consciousness.

She now sometimes presents the once prestigious science programme on BBC Radio 4, I suspect that Alexa gets a lot of “mutes” when that starts.

An interesting and sensible assessment of the reason people move is in Statista today: The World’s Biggest Diasporas Katharina Buchholz, Nov 22, 2022
“Countries currently or recently embroiled in war also have large diasporas as a result. This applies to Syria, where around 30 percent of a population of 28 million now live abroad, as well as South Sudan (21 percent). Countries that are being severely mismanaged by their governments include Eritrea at an 18.5 percent diaspora share and Venezuela at 16.6 percent. An even bigger diaspora can be found in El Salvador at 20.4 percent. A civil war ended in the small Central American country in 1992, but gang violence has prevailed. The biggest diaspora driven by conflict, however, is seen in a non-sovereign territory, as more than 45 percent of those born in Palestine currently reside abroad, according to the U.N. figures.”

Climate change is a non-starter in this debate!

      “…the reason people move…”

Walking along the seashore they find a rubber boat, with a pamphlet attached to it telling them where there is an unlocked country.

I have lived in or visited many countries, and so I obviously believe in freedom of movement as generally a good thing. But there are limits. Every party has uninvited guests of the, “This is my brother. I hope there’s room for one more?” kind. However, the hostess will be less than pleased with, “And those louts pissing in the garden are his rugger mates.”
