BBC’s Fake Worst Drought In China Claim
By Paul Homewood
The BBC reckon this year’s drought in China is the worst on record:
A month-long heatwave and record low rainfall have resulted in an unprecedented drought along the Yangtze, China’s longest river.
Summer rainfall in the Yangtze river basin is the lowest since records began in 1961, according to China’s Ministry of Water Resources.

Apparently a dry summer is worse than two years of barely any rain:

Or 12 months without rain:

Or the 1941/42 drought that left 3 million dead?

Or all of the other droughts in China that have occurred many times in the past:

At least the Beeb used the caveat “…on record” in the headline of that story.
Unlike today’s “2022 will be warmest year ever for UK, Met Office says”
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64111625
The Met Orifice have never heard of the Eemian period?
There must be good reasons why the BBC is so biased, not only politically but in its dubious use of facts. It is now out of hand and has to be investigated by an independent process and made available to the public.
And the very fact that it is…and will never be investigated speaks volumes.
Because all its journalists are self indocrinated millennial
The in house paper is the Grauniad.
They have no perspective.
According to the Chen et al 2014 paper ” Variability and trend in the hydrology of the Yangtze River ,China : Annual precipitation and runoff ” there is no evidence implicating the influence of climate change on ” the annual Yangtze river basin runoff and the YRB precipitation index extends back to 1955 so its hard to believe rainfall records ‘began in 1961 ” The authors [ Wang , Shen et al ] of the December 2022 publication : ” The 2022 extreme drought in the Yangtze River Basin : Characteristics , causes and response strategies ” determined that an unusually intense subtropical high is ” the direct cause of the drought ” combined with enormous consumption of catchment water reserves ….They refrain from blaming climate change also .
I have researched Chinese paleo-environmental history and noting Paul’s time series which is merely a compilation of sites with records , not anything like a Palmer Drought Severity Index and curiously truncated to 1644 coinciding with the collapse of Ming rule , the Ming Dynasty Megadrought AD 1637 – 1643 – just out of view – is probably the most severe protracted drought of the past millennium in China . Now one can understand why Chinese historians , hydrologists and paleo-ecologists are so reluctant to attribute the 2022 China drought to climate change Precipitation index’s from the North China Plain and the Mongolian Plateau show persistent and prolonged aridity and depleted rainfall from 1600 – 1650 contiguous with the residue evidence of massive biomas burning in Siberian ice cores. There we have it : arguably Chinas worst droughts of the past 1000 years concurrent with huge megafires burning across the dry expanses of north east Asia , followed by another cluster during the 1660’s and 1670’s occurred during the coldest decades of the Little Ice Age.. https://researchgate.net/publication/333655645_Climatic_change_and_the_rise_of_the_Manchu_from_Northeast_China_during_AD_1600-1650
Not ‘unprecedented ” ….Not the worst drought in Chinas history ….
I dare not take a bet with my mates that we will never see à temperature higher than the 2016 El Niño spike for thirty years. I might lose
The El-Nino “spike” was equatorial Pacific sea surface temperatures, and it wasn’t very much above those in 1997 and 1982. The air temperatures don’t follow the ENSO very well. There hasn’t been a warm El-Nino in seven years and the cold-phase La-Nina is still with us. The high air temperatures followed the 1997 El-Nino but have since then had a bit of a “hiatus”. Mauna Loa CO2 has made a new record.
“Due to the eruption of the Mauna Loa Volcano, data from Mauna Loa has been suspended as of Nov. 29. Data starting in December 2022 is from a site at the Maunakea Observatories, approximately 21 miles north of the Mauna Loa Observatory.”
https://gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/weekly.html
The Observatory has other stations at all latitudes in the Pacific Ocean. The point is that atmospheric CO2 does not correlate with the ENSO…an entirely natural event that has been taking place unpredictably for thousands of years.
Which record is the BBC using for its ‘worst drought on record’?
Ah – ‘unprecedented’…since 1961. Yawn.
They have tried the “since digital records began ” old chestnut
BBC’s own revision notes describe its own worst crimes. Page 2, they even give themselves a get out of gaol free card for their climate coverage!

Rewriting general history to suit their bias, as well as ignoring weather history.

I have a funny feeling that this coming year, (2023) will see an outbreak of truth in relation to AGW, Politics, World finances and many other contentious issues which will change this entire world for the better. Watch what happens in the USA.
I really hope you are right. These climate alarmists need to be put back in their boxes and governments across the world need to develop realistic energy policies that provide us with energy as cheaply and cleanly as possible, leaving out all the bs and off-setting crap. A cheap, plentiful supply of energy Is the only way to power economies. If the climate zealots are serious about saving the planet, they open their eyes to the ecological devastation being caused by mining for rare earth minerals, waste pollution and mass deforestation caused, in part, by the very solutions they are putting forward.
It is very telling that the BBC is allowed to show clear bias right across all of its programming. It is impossible to watch anything be it drama, natural history or cultural affairs without the injection of some left wing political cause or other. Their drama is a case in point. It is simply unwatchable……
I agree. Over Christmas I watched what I think is currently the last film of the classic The 39 Steps. A very loose version made by of course, the BBC, which has the female character as a suffragette feminist agitator who then turns out to be working for the secret service. Very different from what John Buchan wrote and we studied at school.
At least this year’s Royal Institution Christmas Lecture was not a load of woke bollocks but I am looking too deeply when I comment that virtually all the guests were female?
Did you not know wimin are our future? men? they are all eunuchs and useless. Case in point medical schools. They deliberately take in more females than males. The result, well you need look no further than our local practice which is dysfunctional. My father used to run it with an assistant and provided better care than the current 16 doctors 12 of whom are female and all bar one are working part time! The veterinarian service has suffered the same. Deliberately give places to wimin and what do you find? 99% of them want nice easy jobs in the towns and cities… not wrestling bulls on farms! None of this crap is ever thought through because it is cowards bending to activism time and time again and the activism is ideologically driven only. They cannot count, they have no clue or care about cause and effect. This is our woke world and ain’t it good!
Male enrolment at US universities has seen a big drop. What a surprise given their hatred of men and the promotion of ‘toxic masculinity’. Female numbers have seen a small drop but then they can’t consider themselves safe unless they are women with a penis.
Yes. After the embarrassing and shameful travesties of the last two years (climate and pandemic propaganda) the RI lectures returned some way toward the rigour of earlier days. What encouraged me to view-on was the early commentary when identifying a skeleton: options were male or female and the immutable biologic differences were spelled out. I imagined a collective shocked intake of breath by any of the myriad gender stakeholder types at this heresy. But then I realised they are the last sort of people who would be watching anything factual and informative.
“have resulted in an unprecedented drought”
“Summer is … the lowest since records began in 1961”
So just 50 years defines “unprecedented” for the BBC.
They have no sense of time, nature and natural forces. Utter, utter plonkers.
“Utter, utter plonkers.”
My school in the 1950s, like all selective academic schools then, was tasked with educating bright lower-class boys to replenish the ranks of the upper-middle class. This involved a rigorous division in the 6th form into Arts and Sciences streams. I noticed that there was a certain inferiority complex in those who chose Arts, and for a good reason. Almost everybody who did Science had been fairly good at History and English and Languages. Most people who did Arts had struggled with Science and Maths. ‘Scientists’ therefore had no difficulty in swanking it over ‘Artists’ and educating them a little bit. I realize now that this ‘education’ consisted of the blind leading the blind.
At University, the Arts lot regained their mojo when they realized that it was a delightful base for left-wing activism, and that media and politics was their metier on the outside – with cosy forward-bases such as the BBC in the war-zone; but they still have this habit of picking up tidbits of scientific and technological geewhiz and golly, and believing they know something. They lionize the Scientists who pander to them and destroy in a twinkling of a Twitter those who do not.
The sober truth is that there is no way back from this .
But the good news is that much of the doom and gloom disappears with the workings of the remnants of our economic system. The price of gas (contract size 1 MW for a day, I believe) in Europe just fell to a new low of $80 compared to a peak of $337 in August. The windmills are turning briskly for a change.
We are getting through the winter!
Also, it is raining and last year’s hosepipe ban was just a silly joke.
Still in place in Pembrokeshire!
According to Welsh Water’s official website it was lifted on October 25:

Get out there and water the garden! But put your raincoat on.
Apparently, every drop of water is produced “with love:”

Oh, and one of their main goals is to get rid of domestic abuse.
It must be comforting to realise that a water company has such far-reaching power over people’s morals.
Those links not working. Easy to find the sites by looking for ‘Welsh Water.’
Seems to me, drought in China IS precedented.
Does anyone know if The Visual Journalism Team is comprised of humanoids (speculation) or shall we assume there are actual humans (clueless) involved. An alternative could be an AI Chatbot.
Well John as I confirmed above , the BBC’s Visual Journalism Team is not a traditional journalism investigative team
A record starting in 1961??? So bascially, my lifetime. How long are some of the identified natural cycles?
“How long…?”
Obviously this is a rhetorical question. However, here is an interesting, essentially forgotten, cycle, of length approx. 1,500 years.: Heinrich events; the ‘Bond’ cycle. Gerard Bond died quite young, in 2005. Of course he would be immediately thrown out from the Church today because he was a ‘real geologist’ and not an ‘ordained climate scientist.’

The only records being broken are around the level of stupidity finding it’s woke way into the very fabric of our society
This climate quackery published in the journal ” Psychiatrist ” may pique your interest Paul if you are looking for a laughable junk science story :
” Climate Change is Making Migraines and Other Neurological Diseases Worse by er …’Staff Writer ” November 22 , 2022 ”
According to psychiatrist Andrew Dhawan : ” Climate change poses many challenges for humanity ,some of which are not well studied ” …”For example , our review did not find any articles related to effects on neurologic health from food and water insecurity , yet these are clearly linked to neurologic health and climate change ” Dr Dhawan it would seem scanned a litany of articles on the premise of a populist voodoo science assumption for which he provides no compelling evidence and blithely unaware of the Appeal to Consensus logical fallacy .. For there is no factual basis to the presumption a fictional climate crisis is aggravating “migraines ” for heavens sake, let alone neurological diseases ..I should know : I wrote an entire essay debunking the Japanese Encephalitis virus climate plague scare in Australia .See my extensive commentary under ‘Stuart Hamish ” here on Jo Novas blog https://joannenova.com.au/2022/06/tuesday-open-thread-107/
“…we did not find any articles…”…”…yet these are clearly linked…”
I thought the dogma was that a scientific fact does not exist until peer- reviewed articles say it exists. It is the way the Universe is created (Wittgenstein said the world is made of ‘facts’).
And then God said, “Let there be a fact! And let it appear to Man on November 22 2022 in the Journal…Oh no, I need a break from all this!”
I am not sure that food insecurity has much to do with my occasional migraine.
Looking in vain for the chocolate my wife has hidden from me might be a factor however.
