Gaslighting is defined as manipulating someone so as to make them question their own reality:
German police have denied being "extras for Greta Thunberg" after false claims that her detainment at a protest in western Germany was staged.
A viral post falsely claimed the climate activist being held by police was "all set up for the cameras".
Ms Thunberg and other activists were seeking to stop the abandoned village of Lützerath from being demolished for the expansion of a coal mine.
The video of her being removed by police has gained millions of views.
"We would never give ourselves to make such recordings," a spokesperson for local police told the BBC, denying allegations that Ms Thunberg’s detainment was fake.
But it is important that the police enable reporting and guarantee the protection of media workers, they added.
The viral video shows the climate campaigner flanked by police officers on either side.
Meanwhile a few photographers can be seen snapping photos and moving around her, as Ms Thunberg smiles.
Several other police officers who were also standing nearby appear to be waiting with her before walking her away from the scene.
Some online have jumped onto these moments of officers and Ms Thunberg waiting around, to falsely claim that it is part of a staged photo opportunity.
However the interior ministry of the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia told the BBC that the police officers and Ms Thunberg were waiting for logistical reasons.

Instead of gaslighting, why does not the BBC actually publish the full video, and let people decide for themselves?

It’s just like every time they report on the 2020 US election which were ‘falsely claimed to have been rigged’. Now that’s what I could call gaslighting.
The German police must be really embarrassed at the moment.
And all this is about gaining energy that ultimately keeps human beings alive. Madness everywhere.
Can’t wait for the BBC’s enviro team to highlight the success of Germany’s Energiewende policy.
Despite Germany and France having remarkably similar maximum and minimum electricity demands, yet again for 2022 Germany’s cleanest electricity generation is dirtier than France’s dirtiest.
Perhaps some of your technically-astute readers could suggest reasons for (German) Green Party’s undoubted embarrassment?
As I said before, they were waiting for another bus. What do you expect the police to do, pin her in the mud and drown her and punch the photographer in the face?

They were ‘detained’ with no expectation of arresting them. Just to check their IDs.
Why did Ms Thunberg have to be put on a bus to check her ID. Indeed, do the Aachen police not know who she is? Shouldn’t the police have been arrested for that?
Looks like the police lift was the most fun Greta ever had. Never seen her smile before.

Clever verbiage. The detainment wasn’t fake. She was detained. We can see it in the pix/vids. That has no bearing on the nature of the cop’s involvement.
The story is that some protestors rushed a geographic feature, therefore, the cops had to check their IDs.
Just why is some uneducated girl getting so much attention as a climate expert, surely in the real world she is just a nobody.
She can see CO2, unlike us mere mortals.
“some uneducated girl” Thing is Geoff she is a 20 year old woman. Let that sink in for a moment. So why is she portrayed as a “girl”… presumably a divine virgin? Why are people who are allowed to take make humorous jokes about adults in the public eye not allowed to make jokes about Greta?
Personally up to age 18 I felt she was the subject of child abuse by her predator parents whilst now I feel she is just plain evil and making a fortune out of it.
Surely some tabloid could set up a sting operation to get a young (very brave) lad to seduce her and do a “kiss and tell” exposé – would make a fortune.
Given that she is on the autistic spectrum and has a history of mental health problems she might, in some countries, be classed as a vunerable adult and is therefore still be abused and manipulated.
Does ANYBODY give a flying monkey’s what this deranged ‘gweenie’ kiddie says or does?? We very well clued-up ‘cynics’ do NOT believe there’s ANY global warmin’ ‘catastrophe’, or that ‘our world’s on fire’, or that CO2 is a dangerous pollutant! Slick ‘people’ are becoming enormously RICH via charges, taxation, congestion charging, the ULEZ NIGHTMARE etc. LOOK AGAIN at these people without your rose tinted glasses, it’s ALL a VAST SCAM.
She is a known “face” and got the attention even though she was late to the party. The unknowns of the past 2 years may also have been photographed and identified but didn’t make it into the media. Disappointment?

Comedian Lee Hurst was banned from Twitter when he raised the point that St Greta might have a different view on single use plastics when she discovered sex. She is of course now a 20 year old woman looking like a cross breed of a 9 year old girl and ET – now why is that?
A dumb question I guess, but why do all these “Europeans” feel the necessity to speak in the language of us Brits, Americans, Australians et alia?
Why does St Greta of Sweden feel the need to address Germans in the language of a country both foreign to her and them?
Can’t these foreign cheap skates get it on in their own insignificant languages?
And no I am not xenophobic just fascinated about why these people feel the desperate need to appropriate the language of others. Or are their languages completely insignificant on a global scale….perhaps they should learn Mandarin etc…….
What the hell sort of a job title is “Climate disinformation reporter”?
Clearly a description of a young woman who has barely just graduated from Cambridge with a degree in French and Arabic and whose primary role is to spread disinformation it would seem. It bit like Greta but probably not as well off nor as well miseducated.

The “climate disinformation reporter” is a FACT CHECKER, who determines truth. They are necessary, now.
