India to use emergency law to maximise coal power output

NEW DELHI, Jan 30 (Reuters) – India plans to use an emergency law next month to force power plants that run on imported coal to maximise output, two government sources told Reuters on Monday, in preparation for expected record consumption this summer.
Many Indian coal-fired plants, including those those owned by Adani Power (ADAN.NS) and Tata Power (TTPW.NS) in India’s western Gujarat state, have not operated at full capacity in the recent years because they have found it difficult to compete with power generated from cheap domestic coal.
Federal power ministry officials will work with those involved in debt restructuring of financially stressed power plants to make them functional, the sources said.
India expects its power plants to burn about 8% more coal in the financial year ending March 2024, with increased economic activity and erratic weather to continue boost growth in demand for power

What does it mean for a power plant to ” compete with power generated from cheap domestic coal.”??? They can’t be talking about domestic dwellings burning coal for heating/cooking (India doesn’t need heating, and cooking with coal is toxic)…
Much of India’s coal is imported.
From Australia, Indonesia, South Africa and Russia.
The main use of coal in India is electricity generation.
After that then the steel industry.
Not everywhere is hot all the time.
Think Himachal Pradesh or after the sun goes down.
As for cooking then it is gas, fire wood, dried cow dung.
Hope these brief lines help.

Sounds a bit like subsidies, especially as Russia is game for selling to new markets.
