The King’s Gas Leak

Health and Safety Executive also issued several notices related to worker safety and explosive substances at JV Energen

A green energy company set up by King Charles was investigated for numerous health and safety breaches after the unauthorised leak of more than 1,000 tonnes of global-heating gases.

  • Methane, CO2 and traces of the toxic gas hydrogen sulphide were released after a gas-holder at the plant split open in 2020. The incident, which lasted for 38 days, was described as “significant” by the Environment Agency.

The plant in Dorset, JV Energen, was also investigated for breaches involving “flammable and toxic” substances. It is majority-owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, a hereditary estate that raises revenues for whoever is the male heir to the throne.

The duchy said in a statement: “The negative impact of the emissions associated with the leak, while regrettable, were completely immaterial compared with the positive impact of the provision of renewable energy.”

The plant is at Rainbarrow Farm, near Dorchester, on land belonging to the Duchy of Cornwall. Now owned by Prince William by right of his title of Duke of Cornwall, the duchy estate had for decades been overseen by his father.

  • JV Energen was opened in 2012 and hailed by Charles as a breakthrough in green energy production. It is a joint venture between four farmers and the duchy. The plant turns crops into gas and electricity, which are used in the local area, as well as to create fertilisers for local farms.

  • Interestingly the Guardian also make this comment:

As a producer of green energy, the plant has been eligible for significant government subsidies. These are worth more than £4m a year to JV Energen. Since its launch in 2012, the company has received more than £28m in state subsidies, according to data analysed by the Guardian.

    .

If the King is so keen on using green energy, he should pay for it himself, not expect taxpayers to fork out.

This assumes the King understands the science of climate but all the evidence shows that he does not.

Like much of the Gaurdian this is false and misleading.

The King has had nothing to do with the Duchy of Cornwall since the moment He ascended the throne.

If the Government offers subsidies to green energy the Duchy is following what the government wants when it implements it.

The leak is unfortunate but ALL activity carries risks of mishaps.

Splitting hairs there. Charles was ultimately responsible at the time of the issue. His title now is King, he’s still the same person. It would certainly be misleading to ‘blame’ the new boss.

Quite right. The Duchy raises money to maintain the establishment proper to the Prince of Wales and has invested for centuries in methods of raising the money. When he becomes King he is not Prince of Wales. and so it is the present Prince of Wales who must ask the Duchy for an explanation because he has presumably been landed with the responsiblity along with the title. But this is an ancient Duchy and things may not be as clear as modern contracts . Moral….. keep out of mediaeval laws and customs

If the gases were from an anaerobic digester and hence the majority of which would have been methane, then all that has happened is that the methane produced through the breakdown of organic matter in the digester has been released more quickly into the atmosphere from the digester’s gas tanks rather than more slowly through natural breakdown processes.

So a net zero effect for both the methane and the CO2. Just a loss of useful green energy.

      • April 16, 2023 1:56 pm

The anaerobic digester maximises methane production. Natural aerobic breakdown would produce far less.

IIRC Buck Palace is heated by natural natural gas, and has diesel stand-by generation in the event of a grid power failure.

Doubtless the new monarch will be installing heat pumps.

        The back-up generator is sensible.

Did Prince Albert (The Prince Consort) heat and light Buckingham Palace with coal gas as well as see to the drains ? Coal gas was the great improver of life in Queen Victoria’s day until Post War. in the streets of the City of London. Gaslighters went round each evening on bicycles to light the lamps .

Just in passing…as an example if how scientists can proclaim a ‘truth’ based on their ‘science’, this popped into my view – about how pictures from the Webb telescope have shown galaxies it has found to be much larger than they calculated!
Seems to be a comment from space on how scientists are not Gods. And, maybe, they got CC wrong as well….

It will not be our government making the rules soon. So letters and petitions will be irrelevant if WHO get there way. The WHO will be calling all the shots :-

Yes, the existence and signing of this treaty guarantees there will be another virus let loose on the world so that the UN/WEF can wield their new powers on us.

I have often thought that dark matter could really be just the existence of far more black holes than currently are thought to exist. Dark matter for me has always felt like the phlogiston theory.

      The Queen took
      The methane
      And brought it to
      His Majesty;
      The King said,
      “Methane, eh?”
      And bounced out of bed.
      “Nobody,” he said,
      As he kissed her
      Tenderly,
      “Nobody,” he said,
As he slid down the banisters,
      “Nobody,
      My darling,
      Could call me
      A fussy man –
      BUT
I do like a little bit of methane to my head!”

The Crown always expects the taxpayers to fork out. No surprise here. We don’t expect the Royal Family to live on earned income.

To be fair I expect all such digester plants are hoovering up taxpayer cash or they would not be economically viable. The real blame for this lies with the government for creating such a system.

      • April 17, 2023 10:54 am

If the Royal Family owns a business like the Duchy of Cornwall it operates in whatever environment the government creates. It does not get special treatment.

All landowners get special treatment, being heaped with subsidies for almost all of their activities as far as I can see. They even get their hooks into the lottery money big time whilst we continue to lack hospital equipment nationwide. The upper house will not be disappearing anytime soon that’s for sure.

I’m in danger of throwing my TV through the window as I suffer the one-sided (green) political advert for Caroline Lucas as – against government guidelines – BBC’s Countryfile go totally overboard tonight with their support for CC and, more importantly, the fact that Britain is, ecologically, a failed state!! This is getting to be nothing more than politicisation of listeners, especially children, who are forming a very large part of the program- more-so than any other.

This is precisely why rich elites are wedded to renewables they are cash cows whilst the rest of us suffer with high energy bills and a lousy service.
