Ireland’s mooted cow massacre is a warning to net zero Britain
By Paul Homewood
The Irish government is reportedly looking at plans to cull around 200,000 dairy cows to meet its climate targets. It’s madness
The collateral damage of net zero is now getting uncomfortably close to home. First Dutch farmers were threatened with compulsory purchases to satisfy EU emissions targets, fomenting a new revolt in the process.
Now it’s Ireland’s turn, where the government is reportedly looking at plans to cull around 200,000 cows to meet its climate targets. The scheme would be a bit like voluntary redundancy, with farmers offered financial inducements to give up their cows.
British beef and dairy farmers are now very jittery. It seems increasingly clear that there is an eco-modernist agenda to do away with conventional meat altogether. It’s not just the Extinction Rebellion mob, either; many of the world’s politicians are on board.
It’s very fortunate we’re out of the EU or we could be facing the same pressure from Brussels. Now, we can only hope that Rishi Sunak, who represents a heavily rural constituency in the Yorkshire Dales, understands what’s at stake for farming communities.
Spending vast sums of taxpayer’s money on destroying productive animals would be a perfect summation of the net zero madness infecting the West. The Irish Department of Agriculture has said that the report was just a “modelling document”, but no sane government would even get to the point of including such a plan in “a deliberative process”. Why? Because it is irrational.
Dutch and Irish politicians have failed to recognise that regenerative farming techniques allow livestock farmers to help mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon in the soil. The technology needed to measure soil carbon accurately has recently been developed by a British company, Ecometric. The results are startling. Some British livestock farmers are now being paid for the net carbon sequestered into the soils after the methane from their burping cows has been accounted for. It would mean changing the way we farm to embrace holistic methods; mainly replacing cereal-based cattle diets with grass, but it can be done.

No dairy cows – no got milk! Interesting.
Well, I prefer beer.
Charles Mackay’s Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds comes to mind. Being a Scottish journalist, this is not likely read by Irish elites.
I’d say the lunatics have taken over the asylum but that’s too obvious. What I will say though is that the asylum is getting ever bigger.
Interesting information but until the irrelevant war on carbon and co2 is stopped the madness will continue. The very root of this poisoned ideology must be destroyed.
I’m not a dairy cow farmer, but we grow pecans. The solar panel ‘farmers’ want to buy our land. No more pecans. Can the dairy cow farmers expect that to happen? No more milk? This is crazy!
Total madness. We need the equivalent of the Dutch farmers party in _every_ European country.
Why are European politicians deliberately trying to wreck economies and make life worse for both ordinary people and businesses?
Business need to fight back by refusing to sell or deliver _anything_ to the “climate” fanatics and their families.
I have contacted the Dutch farmer/burgher party and they would be very happy for a similar movement to be started in the UK – whose up for it?
What absolute idiocy and waste.
A thought: how many humans there contributing methane to the atmosphere? – a gas currently measured at about 1850 parts per billion!
The net zero clowns are a menace to society – and I’m being polite here.
Ah! But if you use the exaggerated claim of 85 times as worse than CO2 then the increase due to extra methane means almost all the recent “human Global Warming” is due to methane, not CO2. If you use Tyndall’s MEASURED figure of 4.5 in 1860/1 (and he was a very careful experimenter) then the methane is only about 5% of any supposed human effect.
And all those wind turbines have to have lots more methane for gas turbines to provide backup.
I wouldn’t rely on Sunak doing the right thing, I believe he is a closet WEF and EU supporter.
Me neither. As far as I can tell, he became PM because he fancied being PM, not because he wanted to make the UK thrive and prosper and to restore our freedoms. He will do as he is told by his peer group. He certainly won’t go his own way.
We are firmly in Soviet Union madness territory. An arbitrary target that will not achieve anything whatsoever becomes untouchable and so leads to utterly insane decisions. If Ireland doesn’t cull 200,000 cows, literally nothing will happen. Ireland simply doesn’t matter in terms of climate change, even if it is real.
This policy isn’t going to go down well in countries with a Hindu tradition.
We all know what they are really doing, destroying the competition to their veg and insect protein company investments.
“…Mooted…” a nice little pun for Friday!
Interesting company measuring carbon capture in cow pasture – farmers may soon be selling carbon credits!

Try being an organic farmer without manure from ruminants.
Yet, they call us ‘deniers’!! And then they engineer a bovine holocaust. Words fail me!
I bought a half side of grass fed pork in the 1990’s – never tasted anything like it before or since – as you and others indicate, if we slaughter a valuable and sustainable and efficient “green” food source, and put solar panels on the fields, whilst the sun doesn’t shine you cannot switch on the alternate for livestock or crops – utter bloody anti human madness
Do Animal Rebellion and the rest other eco-loons realise that the result of their demands is the extinction of all farm animals – no cattle, no sheep, no poultry, no pigs etc? They would all be dead as the Dodo, skeleton exhibits at the Natural History Museum.
Not to forget all us human animals too
As Myles Allen and others have noted, the correct multiplier for the greenhouse effect of methane is seven times that of CO2, not the 28 factor commonly used in IPCC reports and in calculating emissions by nations seeking to meet their self imposed targets under the Paris Accord
The medical profession is waking up to the disaster that is the Food Pyramid:
And it’s very difficult, on a day to day basis, avoiding this mistake without meat and dairy.
One such example that reduces Carbohydrates is the Keto diet, and trials, under medical control, have been found to be beneficial, though much much of the NHS are still unaware of this new approach.
While changes professional advice needs to sought, there is much educational material on YouTube. But I haven’t seen much in that line when it comes to a ‘plant based diet’ so beloved by Climate Activists, or an ‘Insect based diet’, promoted by Bill Gates, for everyone else!
Here’s the link again:
The ancient Irish way of life depicted in the annals was based on the aristocratic habit of cattle-raiding which was none too kind to the peasantry. Back to the future!
This is good news really as it will bring home the reality for majority if they keep letting the eco loons rule the narrative and turn them to common sense.
We could give them a really good reason not to cull:

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS ARE HEATING THE ATMOSPHERE: A series of strong geomagnetic storms in 2023 has pumped terawatts of thermal energy into Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating sharp increases in satellite drag. According to NASA’s Thermosphere Climate Index (TCI), the temperature of the thermosphere is near a 20 year high.
