we had hydrogen buses in Newcastle about 10 years ago, they could not get up Dean St fully loaded (from the riverside to the town) and were abandoned. They had fuel cells.
Canny lad, GeoffB, but why did we not all hear about this tragedy of technology, (as an expat-Geordie) I wonder?
GeoffB are you sure cos I can’t find anything about early hydrogen in Newcastle
only Aberdeen
maybe your bus was CNG
I had the impression they were hydrogen, but I was wrong, the batteries gave up after 8 years and they were scrapped as it was too costly to fix or convert to Diesel. Memory problems!
“between 2005 and 2010 the city of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne had a small fleet of hybrid buses which were sourced from New Zealand. In all there were 10 of these innovatively styled vehicles and they were dedicated to the high profile QuayLink services linking the waterfront with other parts of Newcastle and Gateshead. Costing £200,000 each, these were ‘series’ type hybrid buses which used an (approximately) 25kW gas turbine to charge solid gel, water-cooled batteries. In addition the batteries are also charged overnight. .
The buses were withdrawn in 2010 with the cited reason being that they were too underpowered for the hillier sections of the bus routes. They were replaced with normal diesel buses.”

‘Unfortunately, it broke down… only to be replaced by a diesel.’
Don’t laugh . . . you are going to get the hydrogen buses, anyway. And there’ll be no diesel back up for you losers.
Wanna bet?
Here is a search string for you: ” city tries electric bus failure ”
Meanwhile, in the USA, cities and school districts are being given large sums of OPM to make the purchases.
A couple of questions: How long will the battery (ies) last if charged every day?
When a new battery is needed – who pays?
There are other ?, but not today.
“How did Sir Keir get to Scotland today? Did he fly?”
Yes, on his flying unicorn.
Green is new Red. (In politics, not in physics).
“Lessons will learned”!
2018 RV1 & 444 withdrawn
As Tower Transit withdraws London’s fleet of VDL based Wright bodied fuel cell buses we have a nostalgic look at this one on the RV1 route which Sadiq Khan withdrew earlier.
This route used to run between Tower Gateway and Covent Garden via Waterloo and London Bridge.
The new fleet of doubledeck Wright hydrogen powered buses due in 2020 is in doubt after the recent financial difficulties at the Northern Ireland plant
The Electrocity Hydrogen (also known as Pulsar), was launched in 2010, with only two batches (7 total) built. It was the first Hydrogen bus available in Britain, which only emits water vapour.
They were used on central London route RV1 (First London) and later 444 (withdrawn when Tower Transit lost the contract)
October 2021 : A just-delivered hydrogen bus caught fire in late October in the Netherlands. The vehicle is a Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen under the livery of Arriva NL, and is part of a ten-units order commissioned https://www.sustainable-bus.com/news/hydrogen-bus-fire-arriva-solaris/

More hydrogen busstories Be a bit careful cos some do originate from people who promote the electric bus competitors
