How The BBC’s Heatwave Colour Schemes Have Changed

Note how the BBC has subtly changed its colour scheme since 2019:

Still, at least the BBC have not gone for blacks, as Sky News have:

Yes, I see Milan is in the danger zone at 27 degrees for Sky – its average for July is 30!

There might be a narrow band of very hot weather east to west along the Med, bit north of that, temperatures are significantly below average. The Sky presentation is dangerous fraud.

When I lived in Milan fifty-five years ago I found myself almost literally alone in the centre at mid-day during August. It is stifling HOT in summer and it has always been stifling HOT in summer; and the people simply go away – to the seaside or the hills or to descend on any relative they can find in the country-side!

How is London and the south-East shown as orange when its 2-3 degrees below average at the moment?

And where I am in SW France is also 3 degrees below average.

There’s a better graphic to use, one that shows the earlier colour scheme and HIGHER temperatures and a second picture with the new colour scheme and LOWER temperatures.

Good news then that less than 50% of people now use the BBC as their primary news source. I wonder if trust in the media is falling as much as it is in the US although given the monumental corruption of their country that they ignore, things are not so bad here.

They are sales people and marketing consultants

I leave it to Douglas Adams to put it all so wonderfully in context

The Scene: The Primordial Earth where the Golgafrinchans B Ark has crashed(landed) containing all the useful people like management consultants, hairdressers and telephone sanitizers.

    MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT:
…you will see that we are about to have a report from the hairdressers fire development subcommittee today.

    HAIRDRESSER:
    That’s me.

    FORD:
Yeah well you know what they’ve done don’t you? You gave them a couple of sticks and they’ve gone and developed them in to a pair of bloody scissors!

    MARKETING GIRL:
When you have been in marketing as long as I have, you’ll know that before any new product can be developed, it has to be properly researched. I mean yes, yes we’ve got to find out what people want from fire, I mean how do they relate to it, the image –

    FORD:
Oh, stick it up your nose.

    MARKETING GIRL:
Yes which is precisely the sort of thing we need to know, I mean do people want fire that can be fitted nasally.

    CHAIRMAN:
Yes, and, and, and the wheel. What about this wheel thingy? Sounds a terribly interesting project to me.

    MARKETING GIRL:
Er, yeah, well we’re having a little, er, difficulty here…

    FORD:
Difficulty?! It’s the single simplest machine in the entire universe!

    MARKETING GIRL:
Well alright mister wise guy, if you’re so clever you tell us what colour it should be!

    I rest my case M’lud.

As others have commented on the same thing elsewhere, those BBC colours suggest England in orange, is warmer than ‘ normal’ (trigger warning for Phoenix), whereas it was at best average in the warmest area around London, 21-23C, which would have been firmly green on the old scale.

Just watching the BBC Weather Forecast, going to a funeral in Dundee tomorrow and checking the situation for driving up the M6.
There was a section on the Mediterranean heatwave, amazingly the temperatures in Sicily were explained and it was pointed out 47C was the maximum in a specific area and elsewhere temperatures were lower even in the low 30s, 31C I think was the lowest.

Complaints are obviously have an effect, at least on some of the weather staff, don’t let Rowlatt know

Yes, it was a good explanation for those that don’t understand the fact they can find loads of places nearby that aren’t near 47C, doesn’t mean one area didn’t reach 47C. Of course normally the forecasts and reports only give the highest headline figures, which may lead to some people misunderstanding/not believing.

Perhaps, but if you have one reading at a much higher temperature than all those surrounding it, there a reasonable likelihood it’s either an error or a poorly sited station. And immediately broadcasting that high temperature without checking whether its an error or a poorly sited station is misleading. And using that one temperature to claim the climate is changing when the much larger area around is not at that temperature is fraudulent. But carry on defending disinformation and fraud.

It really comes to a strange situation when the official Italian Met office figure reported close by the runway at Cagliari airport is seriously lower (more than 5 degrees) than other unofficial (but highly reported and quite ridiculous sites) barely 3 miles away!

      • MrGrimNasty permalink
        July 24, 2023 7:20 pm

OK I understand your point but it isn’t right to say it is ridiculous. You can get enormous variations of temperature from one side of the street to another in extremis. One side of a hill to another. Foehn winds can raise temperatures by as much as 14C, or the air may be stratified with a hotter mass moving over cooler (or vice versa). One site might be in sun/shade(eg mountainside)/cloud/mist/fog. Being at a point of wind convergence from very different sources. Being on/near the coast, with vastly different elevations in a small land area, as with your airport situation, with a pocket of N.African air moving over, there’s lots of reasons why there could be big temperature variations in a very small distance.
That is precisely what the weather bulletin demonstrated, with Sicily this time.

      • July 24, 2023 7:53 pm

        Mr Nasty

I have a relatively small courtyard with 3 temperature sensors in it and one in the front garden. The three in the courtyard will commonly show 4 degrees C difference, as they are at this moment, with no sun. The one in the front garden is often 2 degrees warmer than any in the courtyard. If the sun shines the differences can be 10C.

I think the overall point is that temperatures must be measured at official sites that fit proper criteria. The random one at the agro station may have been correct, but unless it was subject to all the proper safeguards of shielding from wind or sun, away from tarmac, proper height above the ground and most important that the instrument itself has been recently calibrated, then it shouldn’t be used.

In that case the official one Ray references should be used, unless of course there were other official ones that read hotter. In which case they might claim a record, but as most of the stations seem to date only to 2002 it wouldn’t be an impressive one!

When is anyone going to whisper pyro-terrorism. It used to just be in the ISIS guide, increasingly climate change fanatics recent arrests suggest, now Russian agents too no doubt, as well as nutters that just enjoy arson. But it’s all the fault of climate change all the holiday island erupted apparently.

      • July 24, 2023 5:12 pm

        Pryo terrorism?

We are in conspiracy territory here. It is true that most of the wildfires in many countries were found to be nutter arsonists. Also no doubt many were also accidental through such things as disposable barbecues. No doubt we have some from lightning strikes and some from glass shards causing a fire.

With the amount of kindling left on the ground through providing nice bedding for bugs, if a fire starts in the summer its liable to take hold.

However, you seem to be suggesting they were deliberately started by eco terrorists or actual terrorists. Climate change fanatics are getting increasingly strident but would they deliberately set fire to somewhere that could cause loss of life or damage to property? That would immediately destroy their cause.

        Actual terrorists are another matter

We shall have to wait to see how it all plays out.

      • MrGrimNasty permalink
        July 24, 2023 6:31 pm

Yes it’s a small leap, but the simultaneous eruptions is suspicious. And like I said, ISIS published the tactic and made a call to use it in Europe.
And the professions/leanings of some people arrested for arson (Canada and US esp.) could lead to questions.
        It needs investigating/saying.

      • July 24, 2023 8:00 pm

        Mr Nasty

Some of the eco people could be described as fanatics. Crossing that line to set fires and perhaps kill people or animals and destroy trees is a very big step, because the public backlash would likely destroy their cause.

Are some SO fanatical and believe any measurers can be used if it ‘saves’ the planet? Perhaps, perhaps not, but only time will tell

In the meantime I am sure you are right that as well as ‘ordinary’ arsonists, some will be doing it as ‘traditional’ terrorists, out to harm the West.

    https://greekreporter.com/2023/07/18/fires-shaped-landscape-ancient-greece/

In the Iliad, Homer speaks of wildfires in ancient Greece, as well, allowing us to presume that the Mediterranean climate in itself was then, as it is now, conducive to wildfires. “And as when consuming fire falls upon thick woodlands and the witching wind beareth it everywhither and the thickets fall utterly as they are assailed by the onrush at the fire,” he wrote.

The historian, Thucydides, also describes a wildfire that took place during the third year of the Peloponnesian War (429 BC).

Arson is suspected of causing the wildfire on Rhodes
Officials say there are early indications of arson as a police investigation is launched into the horrific wildfires.

Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, from the Rhodes Fire Department, told reporters that the blistering heatwave may not be to blame for the heartbreaking blaze.

He said: “Fires are set by human hands. Whether it is due to negligence or fraud will be seen (but) people have been summoned for statements and others will be summoned.

Most fires ( >80%) in the western USA (also possibly Greece prior 2023 – less sure) are ignited by something humans do or have done. I had to detour 100 miles around one today that was started when a big truck caught fire while being driven. A small percentage are arson and a somewhat larger number (in the USA west) are lightning.
Sometimes intentional fires – a prescribed burn gone awry – is the fault, but they too are few.
Reports about cause get very little press.

Some of you would have also noticed how the BBC now no longer shows minimum temperatures at night in the UK on their temperature charts. They exclude any place or region which is not a city. Therefore they deliberately only show the maximum minimum temperatures inside cities which inflates the temperature due to the urban heat island effect which is most pronounced at night. For instance, last night the minimum temperatures recorded were around just 2 degrees centigrade above freezing and for July this should have been screamed from every media company in the country as exceptionally cold and in particular because its almost definitely a ground frost and ice risk!! But the BBC only showed minimums of between 12C and 7C in cities. Its definitely a conspiracy to promote global warming hysteria. Its so obvious its sickening.
It’s not about what they report, its mostly what they dont report and hide from the public view which demonstrates how the conspiracy is being deployed.
