Hottest Day Evah In Palermo!

There have been claims of 47C temperatures in Palermo, Sicily yesterday, but they need qualifying.
Firstly, as the above report notes, the temperatures there have boosted by the foehn effect:
The exceptionality of the event – of a historical nature also on a synoptic scale for large sectors of the Mediterranean – is favored by subsidence impressed by the geopotential maxima of the subtropical anticyclone, by a further intensification of the influx of air masses from the Sahara desert (up to 29-30°C in free atmosphere at 850 hPa) and from interaction between the southern currents and the orography of the Palermo mountains.
Put simply, Palermo lies to the north of the mountains, so southerly winds mean sinking air over the city. The foehn effect is known to add several degrees to underlying temperatures.
Secondly, the weather station at the airport, which has a long record, only measured 44C.

This suggests that the urbanisation effect is 3C, as the 47C claim comes from the middle of the city:
All in all, claims of a record temperature of 47C have little climatological significance at all.

I posted a BBC “news you can trust” piece of hysteria yesterday under Paul’s About tab with the BBC pushing the unscientific crap which is climate attribution. It is as worthless as meaningless as experimental archaeology.

The BBC seem to think someone with “qualifications” in modern history is a suitable person to use as a purveyor of balanced comment on climate change and science. Yesterday we were treated to this nonentity, Georgina Rannard.

So much worse than what? WE NEED DATA! What would the weather have been without “climate heating?” Whatever that’s supposed to mean. A begging the question fallacy. The only evidence we have for her assertion is . . . her assertion. The circular logic of pseudoscientists.
Attribution theory isnot only obviously nonsensical but it’s also non-falsifiable, so not science. We have no way of knowing what the temperature in Palermo would have been without CO2 emissions.
Remove all CO2 from Earth’s atmosphere and the global temperature will drop by less than 2 ºC.

So a recording unit atop a tower in the centre of a very large urban area is reliable. Hmmm?

One of the facts that is ignored about cities in southern Italy is that 30 years ago almost nowhere had aircon, now every other window has an aircon unit set into it, all consuming electricity and taking the heat within the building and pushing it to the air outside.
I suspect this adds very considerably to the UHI effect in summer.
Exactly go to Google maps of Palermo city centre and drop down to any street view scene and then count the wall mounted air con units.

Airport temperatures are elevated some degrees too, so the real temperature is actually lower.
Correct. This wx station wouldnt get even a class 5 category so will not be recognised officially. The UHI effect will also be enhanced by the wildfires close to the city which caused the airport to close. So a heat smog would also be over the city and airport. What a joke.

And so what? Records will be broken. They would have been broken without any CO2 emissions. They were broken between 1800 and 1900, before any claimed warming. The high temperature is the result of a clear, well-degined weather phenomenon with multiple variables. There’s no reason to believe that in the last 100 years or so we’ve had the combination of variables that produce the highest temperature.
I still find it ludicrous that they aim to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C from pre-industrial. OK that’s roughly 1650. Happens to be smack bang in the middle of the “Little Ice age” ( 1300 -1850 CE ) Only the idiots would take an Ice Age as a baseline!

With so many fires starting across Greece and now Algeria and Gran Canaria, I’m beginning to smell a rat. Is it too paranoid on my part to suspect these fires are being started but eco-nuts?
M M , you can be fairly sure that the Eco -nuts are doing some of it as they are being paid to promote the global warming fraud .
A few years ago , there was a tree on a Pacific island which was in over 100 year old photos , when it was stated that it showed the same tide levels today , some nutters went and destroyed it to try to claim their ” Rising Sea Levels ” lies .

I’ve just done a small amount of research to determine at what temperature wood will ignite. It seems it varies wildly with the lowest temperature at 274F and this is only after many months of that type of temperature, being behind cookers in restaurants for example. Normally wood spontaneously ignites around 400F-900F and a bit less for “piloted” ignition. I threw that “piloted” bit in to appear knowledgeable but it means with a match or similar.
Clearly even the most argent alarmist would agree that temperatures in the Med. have not reached anywhere near these temperatures so we must draw the conclusion that some other factor is at work here to ignite the wood. The fire chief on Rhodes has already blamed arsonists so I’d go with that.
I’m going out on a limb but I’d say that no woodland/moorland fires start from it being hot. Something else is required such as lightning. No doubt dry vegetation and old, dry wood mens any fire that starts spreads more quickly and more widely, but it’s simply not possible for it ever to be hot enough for wood to ignite.
I boarded a ferry last week and noted two Teslas boarding too. I wondered then what fire-fighting arrangement was fitted that could extinguish a car battery fire. I doubt there was any.
It should be a requirement that passenger vessels do not sail with electric vehicles unless suitable equipment and crew training is in place to deal with that scenario.

Hi Cookers, I posted a translation of that article a few days ago detailing that the
recording point was at the top of the tower, in the centre of a huge heat island and surrounded by air con exhausts. Quite bizarrely a certain regular poster on here variously called me stupid, daft, an idiot, an embarassment and even a “denier” and then proclaimed he would no longer visit this site.
Seems the truth hurts some people.
Hi Ray. It was your post that prompted me to dig out the photos of the actual set up on the roof, kindly provided by the observatory website.
I was also alerted by the report that the temperature didn’t drop overnight.
This weather station record has been used by professional meteorologists as the key indicator of the AGW CO2 heatwave.
I have let them know my thoughts on the matter sent them and the pictures and expressed my lack of confidence in the weather station record.
Utter silence is the only reply.

Interestingly on Greek fires he referenced back to posts in 2007 and 2009 when they last had major fires. Reports into these events threw up a whole load of failures by the authorities as well as the use of arson to clear ground for building, so if there is a human cause it is criminality and incompetence.

Did anyone clock where reporter (Jenny Hill maybe) from BBC was reporting about wildfires from yesterday? An olive grove. In the background, rows of fire stunted and blackened olive trees, but not from these fires, sometime in the past, as they had all recovered and grown new, green branches!
Off topic, but I noticed today that (once again) the Gulf Stream is going to collapse by 2025. Oh dear, the last time it happened led to the Younger Dryas and Northern Europe froze again. But then there was a cause: a huge natural ice dam in north America broke and flooded the Atlantic with fresh water.
