Meet Claire Coutinho

September 1, 2023

By Paul Homewood

Welcome to our new Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero!

 .

Claire Coutinho

Does Claire have any expertise in energy maybe? Apparently not.

Still, she has worked as Corporate Responsibility Manager at KPMG, before becoming a SPAD.

Her most recent experience is as Under Secretary of State for Children, Families and Wellbeing.

So that’s alright then!

She is not so die hard pro NetZero and has the intelligence to be persuaded by evidence.

Yet as “Corporate Responsibility Manager at KPMG”, she’s likely thoroughly immersed in the green blob.

It’s not a prerequisite to have any experience the subject of your department. It’s also not practical to expect it and anyway it’s no guarantee of the minister being any good. What is required is some sort of ability to think for yourself and not toocblindly and unthinkingly follow whatever your advisors or the in situ civil servants tell you.

      • September 1, 2023 11:37 am

But you need sensible advisers and civil servants. There are none of those, as the civil service has been taken over by left-wing incompetents and the green blob.

Being Sushi’s mate is the only reason she was given the job as MP for where I live. I can assure everyone that I didn’t, and never will, vote for her. The bimbo was at our agricultural show on Monday as an alleged judge for some of the horse classes. You would almost think there is an election coming and that the Tories are so popular people would willingly tread in dogshit to avoid them that she needs to make these desperate public appearances.

She’s swallowed the whole ‘CO2 is evil’ nonsense, believes the planet is warming and is utterly clueless about what’s really behind the ‘Net Zero’. (CHINA)

  4. September 1, 2023 11:09 am

Her degree was Maths and Philosophy. Not sure how much maths that includes, but at least she probably can add up.
No physics, electricity, engineering etc , so no strength in the practical stuff.
Apparently a bit of a sycophant with Sunak so will wait find out which way his wind is blowing before doing anything. And he will wait to be told what the polls say, which depend on the question and who gets polled.

Let’s wait and see. If Sunak is giving any thought to rowing back on net zero (or shale gas) a new SoS is the obvious first move. No point in complaining about the lack of scientific qualifications; MPs with those can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
Everyone is entitled to an initial benefit of the doubt!

I read the same in the DT this morning: According to Fraser Nelson, “Like Sunak, she’s wary of climate zealotry and mindful of the cost”. However, Sunak is supposed to believe in low tax! Although whatever she thinks the Tory problem is there’s around 150 climate warriors on the Tory benches.

I know, I know. I’m probably clutching at straws, but the anti-ULEZ mobilisation of the middle classes surely gives them pause for thought. What’s £12.50 a trip compared to the cost (and subsequent inefficiency) of installing a heat pump. I’m telling you, I’ll be on the effing barricades if they don’t drop that one

Just what we don’t need – yet another energy incompetent running our nations energy – in truth, her Dept will be run by the usual 23 year old activist SPADs who also know net zero about energy
I will do the job for half her salary & expenses – our nations energy would be quite safe, reliable, secure & affordable under my watch

It’s not who your Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero is, rather, it’s having a Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.

I have much liking for Andrew Bridgen of Reclaim following his exposure of the vaccine lies and his being hounding out of the Tory party so would vote for them should they appear on the ballot paper. Next up would be an independent but other than those challenging on very specific causes, Martin Bell etc. they have never won and you would need to check that they are not some some sort of leftie moron. And if all else fails, stay at home.

I have been worried for some time about the extent of the brainwashing absorbed by young people, having nieces and a nephew in their mid twenties who look at me strangely when I suggest that questions always need to be asked regarding Climate Change and the Environment.
I was watching BBC South Today at the end of the week and there was an article on three lovely ladies, aged between 25 and 35, who were starting a “Regenerative Farm”. This would of course include diversity and respect for the environment etc etc. Then one of them said that the cattle they will have “will be trampling the ground and trapping the carbon, helping Climate Change …..”

Sadly, I suspect Claire Couthino’s knowledge on energy matters is about the same as Grant Shapps’ knowledge on defence- zilch!!
We will find out soon enough whether or not, like Grant Shapps, she is just another stooge for the Zero Carbon brigade.
Is there any politician who has the nous to stop the rot- sadly, the answer seems to be no!
With ‘I’ll say absolutely anything to become the next Prime Minister ‘ Sir Kier Starmer waiting in the wings to take control at the next General Election, the picture does not look like getting better anytime soon.

Oxford to the City to think tanks to Spad to MP.

“She hailed the U.K.’s status as a leader in offshore wind (“one of the most remarkable success stories in the U.K. today”); welcomed the “green measures” in the upcoming budget, and paid particular tribute to another of her East Surrey predecessors, Peter Ainsworth. Coutinho called him a green giant.”

I wouldn’t expect much from her as she’s another fast climber in politics (became MP in 2019) which indicates that she has been helped (chosen) in her rapid rise.

The green energy fiasco will continue until reality (blackouts) wakeup the politicians and renewables supporters.

Very few people outside independent scientists understand climate change. Net Zero is a totally unobtainable unnecessary concept which cannot have any positive effect. It is a political deceit to further totalitarianism which only benefits countries like China, Russia and India, to the detriment of the west.

Beggars beleif. Her appointment and that of Shapps shows favour over experience by the PM. There were much better candidates with relevant experience. Shapps spent an average of 10 weeks in each of 5 positions in the last 12 months. How can you learn or make a difference in that timescale.

Interesting early test for Claire. Will she continue with the latest stupidity from DESNZ or will she show some common sense? From the Telegraph online:- “Property owners who fail to comply with new energy efficiency rules could face prison under government plans that have sparked a backlash from Tory MPs.
Ministers want to grant themselves powers to create new criminal offences and increase civil penalties as part of efforts to hit net zero targets. Under the proposals, people who fall foul of regulations to reduce their energy consumption could face up to a year in prison and fines of up to £15,000.”

I have voted Conservative all of my life but going to jail for failing to update a house for net zero is ridiculous in fact insane so that my vote will go elsewhere.
With over 60% of properties hardly meeting existing insulation, mostly disadvantaged financially the jails will not be big enough, all for a dream whose country raises barely 2% of the earth’s carbon footprint.

Dear Paul Could I ask for your help?

I am over 80 and now find doing energy calculations difficult.

The Government says they have a target of 10GW of hydrogen by 2030.

Now I know that a GW of hydrogen makes no sense; it is like saying that the distance between 2 places is 30 miles per hour.

My request to you is to calculate the equivalent hydrogen to dollars/bbl of oil cost on the following assumptions.

Assuming we have a nameplate 1GW capacity from an offshore wind farm producing electricity at £100/MWh

Apply a load factor of 60% to this capacity and use this electricity to produce hydrogen by electrolysis at an efficiency of 70%.

This will give us an amount of hydrogen at a cost.

I would like to know what the cost would be, using the above assumptions, to produce the amount of hydrogen equal to one barrel of oil in energy terms?

    My regards

    Nick Dekker
