Record heat?

Not according to NOAA:

  image

image

The summer across the US as a whole was only the 15th hottest on mean temperatures, and 22nd for maximums, well below the 1930s.

Only one State, Louisiana, set a record temperature for the summer.

image

https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/climate-at-a-glance/statewide/mapping/110/tmax/202308/3/rank

According to the US Climate Extremes Index, the percentage of the US with “much above normal temperatures” was not even unusually high, never mind most of the country, as falsely claimed by the Guardian:

image

The sum of (a) percentage of the United States with maximum temperatures much below normal and (b) percentage of the United States with maximum temperatures much above normal.

https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/cei/graph/us/06-08/1

Moreover no new State records have been set for daily temperatures:

https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monitoring/scec/

And even at Phoenix Airport, where we have been told the heat has been most extreme, the the temperature peaked at 119F, which is well below the 1990 record of 122F

So all in all, the Guardian’s claims are pure and simple fraud.

And as we know the ‘new maximums’ are fiddled by over counting heat sink cities and airports. How much total heat is emitted per week from all the cars, buildings, planes and ships that didn’t exist 50 or 100 years ago??

Anthony Watts surfacestations.org project pf a while back showed that by using only verified rural weather stations, the USA had been in reality cooling for some time.

UHI is massively underestimated in the models. By necessity. In the same way that ECS is massively overestimated. By necessity. Or they’d all be out of jobs

The Guardian is very upset about the PM pulling back on net zero and you can see this in the desperation with which they have scoured the world for suitable fearful reports. A once respectable newspaper ought to be ashamed of itself but of course we all know that its funding via the Scott Trust is underwritten by Gates, et. al.

Was it not CP Scott, Guardian editor, who , ironically now, said something like: “comment is free but facts are sacred”
Furthermore if the BBC broadcasts and Guardian website persist in false claims of climate extremes, arousing unjustified alarm in the more emotionally vulnerable members of the public then surely they can be prosecuted under the Online Safety Bill legislation (when it receives Royal Assent).

I’m 72. Brought up near Stockport. Parents, old school Liberals took what was then a good newspaper, the Manchester Guardian. Some very fine journos, such as Neville Cardus, cricket his main focus. Fell into hideous disrepair when it moved to London, the foul Rusbridger helping it on its way to the execrable rag it is now.

I have said this before, but it is still relevant!

By the very strictest of definitions, CO2, IS a greenhouse gas!,

    However the reality is this?

The only wavelengths of IR radiation that can heat a CO2 molecule are: 2.7, 4.3 and 15 micrometres, any other wavelengths, are irrelevant.

These minute heating effects are transitory, why? Because any CO2 molecule in the same trajectory, but at a greater distance, is unaffected!

If this was not the case, life anywhere in the Universe, would be impossible!

I will be more than happy to debate my subjective analysis?

By definition, carbon dioxide is an “atmospheric gas”. This from my plant physiology text in the 1960’s.

Only when in the confines of a greenhouse can it be called a “greenhouse gas” along with every other atmospheric gas inside the greenhouse.

The term was coined by the left in order to made it sound un-natural and scary. As a scientist, I refuse to go along with this misleading term.

I have red and black oak acorns for the first time in 2 years. Some of these nuts require 2 years to mature, so you have to look back at the weather a previous year. It also requires that there be no killing frosts when the trees are in bloom.

Abundant mast years mean there will be increased numbers of wildlife. Around here, there may have been 3 litters of squirrels in some areas of the state due to the food abundance. I have plenty of squirrels, rabbits everywhere, deer and 2 large bucks. My urban hunters have to harvest a doe before they can go after the bucks. This makes no sense when the point of the urban hunt is to rid us of the deer. Each city makes its own rules on the hunt. It is w/ bow. Last year my hunter got 3, but alas moved the the southern part of the state w/ a good job offer. The 2 I have now are motivated, but the deer are not “cooperating” as of now.

AH, the fact that you acknowledge that CO2 absorbs IR at the wavelengths you indicate is surely proof that it is indeed a greenhouse gas. In essence you have just argued yourself that it is a GHG.
I don’t think denying this does our side any good. You are denying something that can be demonstrated in simple physics experiments.
The problems with the climate change hysteria arise further along the chain than this I’m afraid.

The fact that CO2 in the atmosphere absorbs (and emits) selected bands of thermal radiant energy and therefore induces thermal radiant opacity in the atmosphere is a complete red herring.
See Peter L. Ward, U.S. Geological Survey who explains the interactions of radiation with matter.
Ozone Depletion Explains Global Warming. Current Physical Chemistry, 2016, 6, 275-296 DOI: 10.2174/18779468066661606090745 46

Thermal energy can only transfer physically via resonance in this way from higher amplitude to lower amplitude at a given frequency
and, through mechanical contact in matter, from higher frequency to lower frequency, thus explaining the second law of thermodynamics.

Results: Radiant thermal energy is not a function of bandwidth as currently calculated. It is a function only of frequency of oscillation. The higher the frequency, the higher the temperature to which the absorbing body will be raised. Intensity and amount of radiation only determine the rate of warming.

WTGR I do not think “you get it”. CO2 is at the very most a very marginal GHG – if at all – but saturation levels are, from all I have read, very important and any reflected warming stops beyond a set level of atmospheric CO2. I have read very cogent explanations of the very minimal part of the IR spectrum that CO2 reflects – it is very little, and its effect is vanishingly small .
Warming is/always has been/always will be happening- the key is why that is attributed BY humans TO humans – and that has been shot down in flames countless times especially when CO2 levels were much higher in pre human eras – any increase in global temperatures then, observed by humans now, could not possibly be due to the non existent human race. Logic dictates that there must be “another” or “other causes of action”.

Contrast that with water vapour, the most prevalent GHG….

How many times have scientists ( who are not captured by the AWG/CC Ultra Far Left Woke cult ) stated that “we do not understand enough about what influences our climate ” – add to that, where is the discussion from said Woke Cult members of the action and influence of the Sun?

The longer these UFLWC deluders spout their AWG/CC claptrap the more ridiculous – and easier, at least for some, to grasp exactly how – they sound and their hysteria gets ever more …hysterically dangerous and is a threat to us that is far far more damaging than their insistence that we humans pose to this planet ( 4 billion years and and counting ). Evidence – look at the greening of the Sahara , eg – if that is because of the CO2 ejected into the atmosphere by us worthless human criminals, would the UFLWC deluders wind that back if they had the power? How many people would die as a result? Would they be “content” and quote Stalin?

        @ 186no
The exact details of CO2 saturation are complex. My understanding is that at pre industrial levels of about 280ppm the Earth was 2 or 3 degrees warmer than it would of been if there was no CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 becomes fully saturated at about 500ppm, however above 300ppm the warming caused by each addition of x ppm decreases exponentially, although the exact value of x is uncertain. Therefore CO2 being the cause of a relatively small amount of the past 100 years warming can’t be completely ruled out. There was a paper published recently claiming that if CO2 reaches 560ppm (twice pre industrial levels) the Earth will be 0.2 degrees warmer than it would be if CO2 remained at current levels.
Admittedly this is all a bit arcane and irrelevant as it’s obvious that CO2 wasn’t the main cause of recent warming and adding more isn’t going to make a noticeable difference.

      • kzbkzb permalink
        September 26, 2023 2:24 pm

The fact that CO2 absorbs IR cannot reasonably be contested. The greenhouse effect is not an invention of some leftie, it dates back to Arrhenius, the physical chemist, in 1896.
Yes the absorption in the atmosphere is close to saturated, but increasing CO2 still means that IR photons are absorbed nearer the surface, causing the near-surface atmosphere to warm and to be cooler at altitude. As is observed.
It doesn’t help the cause to deny all that. What is more arguable is the climate sensitivity, which is difficult to calculate from first principles and is a derived quantity in most climate models. That is the area which needs questioning.

“…to stop “In Person” voting like the last time.”

Actually, it was reduced, not stopped; 54% of voters say they voted in person. But only 27% did it on the day.

Obviously, a return to “normal” voting – where you have to show up on Election day with good ID – would work better, to the extent that only committed and concerned (and alive!) voters would be counted.

The main point in which 2024 will (probably) differ from 2020 is that the owners of Biden will not have Covid-19 as an excuse for hiding him. Where it will not differ is that one-third of Americans will not notice or care that they are voting for a husk of a man.

There are constant attempts to re-ignite the “Pandemic Terror,”
a yearning desire for a perpetual medical war of some kind; but, without an actual, world-wide, disease they will hardly succeed.

However on the BAS website it states that they have been monitoring ozone in the Antarctic since 1956. One wonders why, in all that time, they found no problem, when CFC’s had been in use for refrigeration since the 1930’s. Suddenly, in 1985, it was discovered for the first time.”

Since around 1996, there has been little trend in either direction for both the measurements and the area of the hole.

Their measurement for Sept through October 2022 of 112.5 DU is little different from an observation made in the spring of 1958 at the French Antarctic Observatory at Dumont d’Urville [opposite side of the South Pole from Halley Bay], when Rigaud and Leroy [quoted in Annales Geophysicae (November, 1990)] reported atmospheric ozone levels as low as 110 DU. Sixty five years and little change, yet the whole Montreal Protocol apparatus and all the costs involved, all the billions siphoned off, is a strong parallel for AGW and Net Zero.

The “made more likely because of climate change” or simply “because of climate change” mantras are now everywhere and NEVER qualified. This claim is based on the absurd empirical date free nonsense which is climate attribution. Notice how the word weasels rarely admit to that.

Notice also that strangely they never mention Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) any more. This is deliberate. Previously that suggested to anyone with more than three active braincells that there was warming other than that “claimed” by the Arts graduate pseudoscientists to be made by man. That had to be changed so under instructions from their puppet masters in the shadows, the BBC, Grauniad et al quietly dropped reference to AGW and there you are. There has been a deliberate and cynical ploy to quietly forget about natural warmin and through lying by omission our media lead Joe Public to the conclusion that all warming is man made. This is planned and this is deliberate.

Also like their far lefty brothers/sisters/things in Democrat Party in the US, the word weasels of the Climate Industrial Complex have happened upon the shocking realization that there are no adverse consequences to openly lying to the public. In fact, the consequences are only positive because more and more people become “beliefists”. So making claims which are not only factually wrong but known to be so is now par for the course. This creates work for the likes of Paul who is met with a barrage of timewasting obfuscation at the public expense when he points out to the BBC that their claims are factually not only unsubstantiated but wrong. This is quite deliberate to waste time and get him and other stalwarts to just give up.
