Unconservative?

Conservatism is about being pragmatic, fiscally competent and defending personal freedoms from the abuses of state power.

It is not conservative to force the public to spend tens of thousands on products they don’t want.

It is not conservative to ban things.

It is not conservative to wreck the car industry.

It is not conservative to endanger our electricity grid.

It is not conservative to damage the economy in pursuit of a target that is meaningless, given the continued growth in global emissions.

It is not conservative to blindly carry on with policies which are not working.

Above all it is not conservative to bypass the public and effectively hand control of public policy to a tiny, unelected clique of extreme climate activists and the renewable lobby.

Given that BSE was a none existent problem and nothing but media scaremongering based on dodgy computer models and a mountain of assumptions on a molehill of facts/evidence, giving his daughter a beef burger on live TV was about the only sensible thing he’s ever done.

No great fan of Lord Deben, but as the Minister of Agriculture at the time, he had to give that hamburger to his daughter, as an expression of his faith in the safety of British beef. The alternative would have collapsed the market. I told him so when that daughter graduated along side my own at St Andrews many years later. And he was right about that beef!!!

I have no quarrel with that. The CCC should not be taken as a source of truth on climate change. My point was much narrower and concerned Gummer as Min of Ag. A common cause of ridiculing him, but, in this one case, not justified.
Re the recent stance on climate change, Lord Deben is as guilty as anyone…

I’m not sure this Conservative government has done anything Conservative in 15 years, other than forcing through Brexit, and even then it took a highly non-Conservative view of the various agreements. We have much higher taxes, much higher spending, far more laws and regulations, far more state control of the economy, far more Left-wing influence in schools, universities and the civil service. It’s as if we never got rid of Blair.

I resent the accusation that Liberals want to control everything. That is an Americanism, perhaps. Not suitable on a site based in the United Kingdom where there used to be a Liberal Party in Parliament. They were all about being liberal ( English Word) with regulation and voting rights and so on. Consult 19th Century history text books. Also I object to Labour Party being used by people who do not represent the workers but only leftwing graduates in the news media.
The newsmedia seems full of people with no background in English and Scottish history and often have English as their second language. ( I write from New Zealand where headlines often make me wonder if the editors passed their Basic English class.examination) 🙂

A couple of years ago I went to a public meeting about the climate panic next to the River Deben. As a non-believer I only asked one question – how the output of wind turbines was monitored to ensure the generator capacity was not under-declared to maximise the subsidy. The ‘noble lord’ didn’t know.

My impression was that he is a man who doesn’t listen, and in a government of limp intellects his purported conviction means it’s easier for them to agree like the nodding donkeys they are.

The Conservatives have not been Conservative for 50 years or more, other than a brief interlude under Thatcher, just as Republicans have not been Republican for decades except under Reagan. Since 1945, both major parties have been converging on a supposedly technocratic, managerial politics that mirrors the way the EU sees the world – run by clever people making regulation. The Left understand this which is why we see the Corbyns and Sanders of this world pop up every so often, but they too fail. Much of Europe went down this path too – what does Macron stand for exactly? What is the difference in Germany between the two main parties? This is “consensus politics”, where all politicians broadly agree on everything and think because they agree with each other they must be right. That pushing back an authoritarian ban by 5 years is seen as an extraordinary act tells us this. We are ruled now, completely and totally.

“Ruled”? – never; the “ruling class” will collapse like all empires do, and is cracking at the seams already. NZ and SACRS COV2/CV are the two greatest, most malign prolonged attempts at totalitarian rule in history (imho, of course) if only by dint of the numbers. This will end very badly; these depots cannot control the flow of information and their attempts to do so have failed, badly in one sense but less so in another.

Politicians are anachronistic; their parties more so. I do not think we have begun to see how “life” is going to change. I used to think “The Prisoner” was the most vivid representation of a dystopian nightmare and watching it again now, it is still disturbing; but it does not come close to what has been/is being done to “us” post WWII. AWG/CC and Frankenstein drugs – I will resist until my last breath and I encourage others to do the same. There are many ways to resist and human ingenuity knows no end.

It’s not British to impose 500,000+ net immigration on the UK for 20 years. But it’s happened whoever has been in power.

It’s not British to force untested military prototype products onto an entire population. But it happened with bipartisan support.

It’s not British to reject three successive mandates for Brexit between 2013 and 2019. But both Conservatives and Labour are doing their level best to do so.

It’s not British to say that White people don’t represent Britishness any more. But Sadiq Khan got away with saying it.

The concept that politicians represent their electors is a nice childhood fantasy disproven by 30 years of adult experience, in my book.

Quite why we expect a culture of Oxford PPE entitlement to be competent, loyal, patriotic, fiscally capable or technologically educated is beyond me.

As long as a 3 year course in bullshitting to academics is a passport to ‘governing’, the UK will not be governed competently going forward as far as we can see.

There is a definite argument that a minimum quorum of competence across a wide selection of economic/societal/cultural areas is required in the House of Commons and that ‘non PPE-educated short lists’ are required in 600 of 650 constituencies across the UK.

I think the problem with Gummer is that he thinks that ‘conservative’ simply means being anti-socialist, but he doesn’t seem to be aware that there are two different versions of socialism, and that he is pushing something like the second version of it:

Definitions of the two forms of socialism taken from the 1947 essay “Planned Chaos” by Ludwig Von Mises:

“There are two different patterns for the realization of socialism. The one pattern—we may call it the Marxian or Russian pattern—is purely bureaucratic. All economic enterprises are departments of the government just as the administration of the army and the navy or the postal system. Every single plant, shop or farm, stands in the same relation to the superior central organization as does a post office to the office of the Postmaster-General. The whole nation forms one single labour army with compulsory service; the commander of this army is the chief of state.

The second pattern—we may call it the German or Zwangswirtschaft system —differs from the first one in that it, seemingly and nominally, maintains private ownership of the means of production, entrepreneurship, and market exchange. So-called entrepreneurs do the buying and selling, pay the workers, contract debts and pay interest and amortization. But they are no longer entrepreneurs. In Nazi Germany they were called shop managers or Betriebsführer. The government tells these seeming entrepreneurs what and how to produce, at what prices and from whom to buy, at what prices and to whom to sell. The government decrees at what wages labourers should work, and to whom and under what terms the capitalists should entrust their funds. Market exchange is but a sham. As all prices, wages and interest rates are fixed by the authority, they are prices, wages and interest rates in appearance only; in fact they are merely quantitative terms in the authoritarian orders determining each citizen’s income, consumption and standard of living. The authority, not the consumers, directs production. The central board of production management is supreme; all citizens are nothing else but civil servants. This is socialism with the outward appearance of capitalism. Some labels of the capitalistic market economy are retained, but they signify here something entirely different from what they mean in the market economy.”

The first version of socialism is the most well-known, where all industry is nationalised like in the old Soviet Union. The second version is associated with the Nazis (the Nazis were the National Socialist party, but they are far better known for the nationalism aspect than the socialism aspect), and it is effectively crony capitalism applied on a massive scale. The second version is much more ‘business friendly’ than the first version.

The Green capitalism that Gummer pushes is similar to Nazi-type socialism. Gummer doesn’t see a problem with it because business people seem to be happy with it and there is no nationalisation of industry going on.

    • Gamecock permalink
      September 27, 2023 1:33 pm

The second type is fascism: Strong, autocratic, central control of a private economy.

The principal difference in the two types is who owns the means of production. Both cede infinite power to government.

The USA has been fascist for 50 years. 600 federal agencies tell the people how they should be living.
