Website Issues
By Paul Homewood
A couple of website issues.
1) I had to delete the Octopus post, so apologies to those who tried to comment.
Once again it had somehow corrupted the links on my website.
It happens occasionally with WordPress, and I have no idea why, but the only solution is to delete.
2) A number of readers have commented that they have to keep signing in every time they want to make a comment.
Nothing has changed at this end, but I recall having the same issue with WUWT a year or so ago, which suddenly disappeared.
Can I throw this out to everybody for suggestions?
Is there a simple answer? Or do others not have the same problem?
It may of course be a problem to do with particular browsers, or maybe cookies etc.
Thanks
Paul

Paul,
Relax.
You are closing on 20 million page hits.
Best wishes.
20 million, wow. It’s no more than Paul deserves for all his sterling work. 👍
No problems for me using Google as a browser, Windows 10.
Interesting, a bit long winded…

I use Duck Duck now – for six months or more – and have had the logon problem for a month or so. I’ll see if I can get back to Google (don’t know how) to see if it changes.
Paul, WordPress became WordStress for me a couple of months ago, to such an extent that I now write in Word first to be sure of not losing a post at the moment when I try to press the REPLY button. For example, when I first try to REPLY the right half of my screen can become covered by a double page of almost blank text (each with its own rotating aero); so I can’t press the REPLY button and have to start all over again. But yours is not the only site affected.
I am working with Windows 10 and Chrome.
Regards, John.
I believe WordPress did a significant software upgrade recently – it caused issues with WUWT that are still present to varying degrees – please use a good secure, private browser like DDG, Brave, TOR etc, don’t bother with google its just harvesting your personal data to sell
A one time chance to say this..
Paul. Have you thought about the future, an assistant/successor?
In particular, and in view of your concerns about possible interference, have you made arrangements to protect/back up the invaluable research you’ve been doing all these years…..on disc/s, located away from your address.
I hope the answer is a yes.
Things could turn ugly without warning…….remember “the night of the long knives” where Hitler had the whole of his top ranks in his army murdered simultaneously so he could have total control.
We’ve all just been reminded about being caught napping, with the Hamas raid on Israel…..I am, by the way not pro-Israeli…even less pro-Hamas.
Enough said.
Do not reply to these points!
I have to log in when I try to reply. Sometimes that works and often it doesn’t. The old system always worked.
Using Edge with no issues till I did a browser clean up and had to sign into WordPress again next time I tried to comment.
Laurence fox made the same points about backing up data yesterday.
Clearly we are heading for some dystopian nightmare.
Happens quite a bit with WordPress on other sites I visit too
I have no problem logging in. See this WordPress article – https://bit.ly/3LRM0WY
Test from Brave broeser
I use Vivaldi and Firefox on Windows 11. Both need log in to comment here.
I use Vivaldi and Brave on Android phone, Vivaldi requires logging in. Just going to try Brave.
That also needed login ID
I use MS Edge. No problems.
NTZ wants a signin. Has for a couple of months. I ignore it.
Is it not possible to create a “WordPress” account for an “enduring” login ? I can see a “WordPress” logo under “Log in to leave a reply”
If logged in via WordPress elsewhere there is no login request on this WP site.
” If logged in via WordPress elsewhere there is no login request on this WP site. ”
Thanks OB, I’ll give that a “spin”
At the risk of stating the obvious, and no-one probably cares anyway, but the above username typo was the result of my careless typing.
An “enduring” login is needed for slovenly typists who can’t get their own username right.
I suspect it’s WordPress. We have also been having issues at Cliscep.
Seconded.
Yes I’m having trouble with WordPress
The wording changed. It now says “login to leave a reply” instead of immediately asking for an e-mail address and a name, but that works by selecting the last icon on the right. No need to mess around with actually logging in to WordPress or Facebook.
Is there any chance of an e-mail distribution list so that we can simply subscribe using our e-mail clients and post and reply from there? It is certainly possible to have the option of using e-mail client and web browser on all groups.io mailing lists. It was even there on the Yahoo mailing lists and subscribe without even having a groups.io or Yahoo account – these were only needed when using a web browser.
I can get notifications of all new posts, but I have not found a way here yet to get notifications of comments unless I type something in “leave a reply”
Testing to see if I can now comment. I never have been able to.
I’ve been having problems replying…several replies of extreme brilliance disappeared because I couldn’t log in.
The logical place to make a reply would be the e-mail client, but I have never succeeded in making that work. The only way I can make posting comments work is to start a web browser.
Test
(Strangely) your WordPress site seems to give me the least problems Liking/Commenting problems of the 3x WPress sites I visit regularly.
The workaround I’ve found when I do have an issue, is to view sites/posts directly in https://wordpress.com/read, but it’s a PIA needing to do that.
I have noticed that Paul has had to take down at least 3 topics in the last few months, probably more. I am wondering if there are any common issues between each subject but as I can no longer view the subjects nor remember them in detail, I can’t comment. Just seems odd to me that this topic related to the seemingly all powerful Octopus and, unless my memory confuses me, I am sure previous deleted posts related to large private organisations.
Anyone got any steers on this line or is it my fertile imagination?
Originally there used to be a Twitter icon which I used to log in with. In fact, I only joined Twitter to be able to comment/log in to various sites – that’s now disappeared. Now trying to comment with ‘new’ method’. I wonder if I will succeed?
Oh dear! Well – what a palaver! Got in eventually but forced to include the “1” in my user name, which I didn’t want. I used to be able to make comments with just “Luc Ozade” . I just went through offers of new accounts, choosing a “domain” (whatever that is – I have no idea!). I don’t know why everything is so over-complicated these days.
Kudos to Paul, as always, for keeping us fully informed.
Just click on the last icon on the right and enter an e-mail address and a name after you have typed your comment. Don’t forget to check the boxes for “new posts” and “new comments”
Leaving a comment. Using feedreader.com. See what happens.must leave my name and address as usual M E Emberson New Zealand. It will email me new posts instantly ,daily, weekly. but I don’t use these facilities because I am in another hemisphere and over the International Date Line !!!
I have done this for a long time. I hope there is something useful in this message 🙂
Testing Mr Realist’s suggestion. If it works it’ll be my first ever success in over 2 years of interesting reading. My thanks to Mr Homewood for all his time & effort
Wow !. Success at last thanks to Mr Realist.
